Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife
Chapter 339: Settling Accounts

Chapter 339: Chapter 339: Settling Accounts

Nanzhi had never seen an ice shaver before; the milk tea shops at her school made slushies using a machine.

All she could do was to recall the potato grater cast from her childhood and draw a picture of it for the blacksmith to use as reference.

Inside the unwrapped cloth bag, a knife blade that cost two taels of silver finally emerged.

Perhaps due to Nanzhi’s generous payment, the thoughtful blacksmith had even added wooden handles to the sides of the blade.

As she gripped the ice shaver, Nanzhi only felt it was somewhat hefty, but it seemed just like what she had asked for. She was pleased with this.

"Sister Nanzhi, is this the ice shaver?" Shen Miaomiao, full of curiosity, stared at the dull iron plate in Nanzhi’s hand.

Such a strange looking iron plate. Why were there so many holes in the blade?

"Sister Nanzhi, will it work well?"

"It should. I haven’t tried it either," Nanzhi glanced at the ice shaver in her hand, not particularly confident.

Only after Liao Da placed the ice blocks onto the wooden tray did Nanzhi grip the wooden handles and began to shave the ice back and forth.

Although it took a bit of effort, with every move Nanzhi made, small ice shreds slowly emerged from the holes in the blade.

"It’s working! It’s working!"

Shen Miaomiao shouted in amazement, visibly overjoyed.

She and Nanzhi had visited all ice shops in Yan City, some upscale ones sold drinks made with shredded ice.

However, they found that the ice shreds in those shops were all smashed out, uneven in sizes, some had already melted while some remain large chunks.

But with this ice shaver, the resulting shaved ice looked extremely fine and soft.

"Liao Da, you shave the ice. Miaomiao, bring some fruit jam."

Swallowing, Liao Da looked at the chilly ice blocks. He had never eaten shaved ice in the summer before.

"Alright, Boss, just name the quantity you want." Liao Da rubbed his hands, obviously eager to get to work.

"Shave a lot, and if you get tired, let Aze take over." Nanzhi nodded, and went to prepare the jam with Shen Miaomiao.

Given Nanzhi’s words, Liao Da mustered all his strength to shave the ice and continued until both of his hands grew warm, only then did he stop.

"Aze, come take a turn at shaving." Liao Da shook out his hands, nudging Aze with his elbow.

"Alright."

Responding, Aze finally took his gaze off Shen Miaomiao.

Feeling that piercing gaze leaving her, Shen Miaomiao breathed a sigh of relief.

"Miaomiao, what’s wrong?" Noticing her sudden relaxation, Nanzhi asked quietly.

"Nothing." Shen Miaomiao shrugged, not saying much, and placed the bowl of jam on the table.

Nanzhi frowned but didn’t ask any further, focusing instead on making the shaved ice. She would ask Miaomiao about it later.

Aunt Guihua had already left the Shen Family home, and as usual Shen San went out to work, leaving only Shen Zhong and Li Lian.

Looking at the tightly shut door in front of him, a glint of ruthlessness flashed through Shen Zhong’s eyes.

"Li Lian, open the door."

Shen Zhong’s voice carried a menacing tone.

The door remained shut. Li Lian just gripped her hands tightly and bit down on her teeth to stop herself from making a sound.

Shen Zhong was never a good person.

She should have taken Shen Miaomiao’s silver and left long ago.

Even if it meant continuing in the flesh trade, it was still much safer than staying by his side.

"Li Lian—" Shen Zhong’s eyes were clouded over, his knocking on the door showing clear impatience.

"Don’t you think that lass Shen Miaomiao could genuinely be in charge of this household?"

With every word Shen Zhong spoke, his grudge against Shen Miaomiao grew deeper.

Upon hearing his words, Li Lian felt a tingling sensation on her scalp, and her hands were tightly clenched into fists out of fear.

Receiving no response for a long time, a malicious glint flashed in Shen Zhong’s eyes as he swung the axe in his hand towards the door.

Each loud thud that echoed in Li Lian’s ears only served to intensify her trembling.

Li Lian was no stranger to Shen Zhong’s violence.

He would beat her when he was drunk; he would also beat her when he had no silver to buy alcohol. If she brought back silver from selling herself, Shen Zhong would hurl insults, calling her a whore.

Yet if she didn’t bring back any silver, she would be worse off.

She had endured so much suffering in the past two years.

Slowly, Li Lian’s pupils started losing their brightness, rendering the world before her eyes blurred and shadowy.

The cursing voice of Shen Zhong and the thuds of the axe hacking at the wooden door rang in her ears.

When the last blow fell, the door swung open. A triumphant grin spread across Shen Zhong’s face as he was about to step in, but he heard someone knocking from the courtyard door.

"Damn it."

Shen Zhong muttered under his breath while hobbling towards the door with his cane.

There stood three men at the door, all with stern faces and fierce eyes.

"Shen Zhong, get out here, you bastard!"

The man in the lead had closely cropped hair, leaving not more than half an inch. He had a terrifying scar stretching from his brow to his cheekbone, which distorted slightly when he spoke.

Shen Zhong instantly lost his menacing demeanor, looking around frantically for a place to hide.

The man called Liao Er outside the gate had lost his patience. With a nod of his head, he signaled his henchman to take action.

The burly man nodded, stepping forward and kicking open the courtyard gate.

As Shen residence was in such uproar, the curious neighbors peered out their doors, but they quickly retreated when they saw who was there, daring not ask any questions.

The door was kicked open from the outside and a Shen Zhong, who wasn’t standing steady, was hit in the face by the rebounding wooden panel. The sharp splinters pierced his flesh, causing him to collapse on the ground in pain.

The thug wasn’t softhearted either. As soon as he entered the yard, he kicked Shen Zhong to the ground and returned to Liao Er’s side.

"Trying to hide from us?" Liao Er spat out before purposefully stepping on Shen Zhong’s wound.

His head being stepped on and his wound being ground against, Shen Zhong could barely care about his aching belly due to the excruciating pain.

"Brother Liao, Lord Liao, I really wasn’t trying to avoid you. My leg ... My leg, I can’t... I couldn’t open the door in time."

Shen Zhong begged for mercy while his mouth was filled with grit and dust.

"So you’re saying it’s my fault for breaking your leg?"

With these words, Liao Er increased the pressure under his foot, causing Shen Zhong to see stars from the pain.

"No, no, no! Lord Liao, I beg you to let me off. I really... I really didn’t have time!"

Due to the severe pain from his wound, Shen Zhong’s voice quivered as he pleaded for mercy.

"Is that so?"

Liao Er raised an eyebrow, bestowing a reprieve by moving his foot away.

"Thank you, thank you, Lord Liao."

Shen Zhong knelt before Liao Er, knocking his head on the ground several times.

"Is your silver ready yet?"

He had encountered many people like this, and had grown indifferent to their pleas for mercy. He simply stated his purpose.

"Please, Lord Liao... give me a few more days," Shen Zhong’s face was now a gruesome sight, with blood, sweat, and mud from Liao Er’s shoe mixed together, making him look quite nauseating.

"Half a month ago, you said you had a way to get the money, and that’s the only reason I spared you then. And now..." Liao Er glanced at Shen Zhong on the ground, clearly disgusted.
