Chapter 30: Chapter 30

Seeing his wife’s confusion, Lin Ercheng didn’t rush to explain. First, he followed Mother Lin out of the kitchen with some chestnuts and sweet potatoes that Nanzhi had brought back some time ago, then took the whole family to the dam at the entrance of the village.

The earthquakes sometimes come in waves; their family would probably have to stay on the dam for a couple of days, so it’s always good to bring some food.

After they had gathered all the stuff and everyone reached the dam, Lin Ercheng looked at his wife and sister-in-law’s puzzled faces and finally explained, "When Nanzhi was little, she was quite mysterious."

Nanzhi almost dropped the sweet potato in her hand when she heard her brother speaking earnestly about how she was a ’mystical person’.

When she saw that her mother agreed by nodding her head, she bowed her head and ate her sweet potato. Whatever they said was fine. After all, she wasn’t the original owner, she had no position to refute anything.

Lin Ercheng chuckled as he saw the skepticism on the faces of his wife and sister-in-law: "You guys mustn’t disbelieve. Just look at Nanzhi’s name, does it seem to you..."

Looking around and ensuring their father hadn’t come yet, he continued: "Just look at her name. Do you think a man like father, who can’t read a single character, could give such a name? It was given by a Daoist who passed by Stone Village when she was a child. He cast divination and said that Nanzhi had a destiny, so he had to name her ’Nanzhi’."

Sun Cui glanced at her sister-in-law who was squatting on the ground eating sweet potatoes and was surprised. "My younger sister got her name like this?"

She remembered thinking it was strange when they were discussing the marriage - the two Lin brothers had such ordinary names, Dacheng and Ercheng, but her sister-in-law had such an elegant name. So it turned out there was this backstory.

She had thought the name was given by Li Zheng.

"Yes, at first, our father didn’t believe it and thought that the Taoist was making fun of him for being illiterate, so he always let us call her Nanzhi. Later, when Nanzhi was five years old, she suddenly started crying in the middle of the night. Our mother was comforting her all night, and my older brother and I got beaten by our father. He insisted that we had fed her too much at night, and that’s why her stomach was bloated."

While speaking, it seemed Lin Ercheng was somewhat resentful, he cast a glance at Nanzhi.

Nanzhi felt a chill run down her spine and she continued to listen attentively. She was actually rather curious, as she and the original owner shared the same name and looked the same.

"After we got beaten, Nanzhi stopped crying and kept yelling that my brother and me must not go to the mountain. The next day, a wandering doctor arrived in the village saying he wanted to collect wild hawthorns from the mountain. Since the adults in the village were busy, they sent the children to pick them. But we two brothers got beaten up the night before and could barely walk, let alone climb the mountain. The children earned twenty to thirty wen coins in the first couple of days. But on the third day, Nanzhi tried to stop those children from going up the mountain and got scolded. She returned home crying. And later at noon, there were rumors that there had been a landslide on the mountain and the kids had all tumbled down from it."

"We considered this an unfortunate coincidence, but another time, Nanzhi said it was going to rain heavily, and advised us to gather our crops. Not an hour had passed, and there was a downpour from what was previously a cloudless sky. The food of those who didn’t heed the warning was mostly washed away by the rain, and they nearly starved to death."

"Nanzhi is that mystical?" Chen Qiulan listened to all this with her eyes wide open in disbelief.

"Yes, indeed miraculous. There were quite a few incidents like these. When she became older, we didn’t hear about such dreams anymore. For all these reasons, father finally agreed to officially name her ’Nanzhi’."

Nanzhi swallowed the last bite of her sweet potato. She touched her slightly sore jaw from chewing and thought that the original owner indeed had some destiny. Which meant that the dream she had was most likely real.

With these thoughts, Nanzhi started to panic. What if there really was a huge earthquake? What about Gougou?

The more she thought about it, the more anxious she felt. Nanzhi wished she could fly back to Lihua Village immediately.

"Mother, I have to get back. I, I’m worried about Gougou."

Mother Lin, who had been assessing whether they had brought enough sweet potatoes and chestnuts for everyone, hesitated after hearing what Nanzhi said. She wanted her daughter to stay with them, but Gougou was still in Lihua Village. If an earthquake occurred, the little one would surely be frightened.

"Ey, well then you... you... be careful. If you feel the ground shaking, just lie down on it. Be very, very cautious."

Even if she was reluctant to let her daughter go, Mother Lin could only let her go slowly. As a mother, she understood her daughter’s thoughts.

"Alright, mother, remember, don’t go under the house!"

Having said that, she swiftly climbed back onto the small donkey, hasting towards Lihua Village.

The night had already fallen completely, and it seemed like thunderous black clouds were relentlessly accumulating in the sky, flashing with purple light. From afar, it looked as though a black bull suddenly appeared in the sky, ready to charge through the Heavenly Gate at any time.

With just one glance, Nanzhi felt a shiver in her heart. Could this be why the ancients referred to an earthquake as the ’overturning of the earthox’?

The donkey, after grazing on four or five sweet potatoes given by Mother Lin in the large Stone Village, had picked up a good bit of energy, so even if it couldn’t run as fast as before, it was not slow either. Every now and then, it would bray to express its exhilaration.

The people of Stone Village, after hearing what Father Lin had said about Panya dreaming of an ’earthox overturning’, dared not delay for a moment. they rushed to gather quick food from their kitchens and hurried towards the dam at the village entrance with their families.

In less than half an hour, the dam of Stone Village was crowded with people. Had someone else claimed to have dreamt of the ’earthox overturning’, they might have laughed it off. But it was different with Lin’s daughter, who had uncanny dreams. Even though it had been years since she last spoke of such a dream, but because of her childhood premonitions, no one dared jeopardize their lives by dismissing it.

However, the folks of Lihua Village weren’t as cooperative. Ever since they went chestnut picking at East Mountain, and had bought food from the town, everybody was too lazy to move again. Only less than half agreed to heed Li Zheng’s words and stay at the dam; the rest either decided to rest at home, or pretended to agree but went straight back to bed.

As Nanzhi rode her muddied little donkey, she suddenly heard a thunderous sound in her ears, followed by a roar of thunder. The donkey, which had been frolicking merrily, also unexpectedly tottered, neighing as it toppled over with Nanzhi into a low-lying field.

Before she had time to react, Nanzhi found herself fallen in the field. Fortunately, earlier the villagers drew water from the river behind the village and the soil in the field turned into soft mud. Besides experiencing some pain from the fall, no serious harm had been done.

It was a struggle to pull herself out of the muddied ground, and before she could take another step, she felt the ground start to shudder, the surrounding trees quivering along.

"Ah—uh—ah—uh—"

The donkey, muddied from its tumble, steadied itself and gave two brays before trotting closer to Nanzhi.

Having been left in darkness, Nanzhi was already scared, and only regained confidence after feeling the donkey by her side.

As the trembling of the ground beneath her continued, Nanzhi and her donkey stumbled and stumbled towards Lihua Village. Fortunately, they were already near the boundary of Lihua Village when they fell. In less than half an hour they reached the entrance of the village by crawling and tumbling. As Nanzhi was about to call out, she was knocked over again by an unexpected tremor.

She smacked her head on the muddy road without any protection, seeing stars from the impact.

She lay there for about a minute before regaining her senses. From afar, she could see that a clay-brick house near the dam had collapsed, and the people on the dam were screaming.

Nanzhi lay on the ground, looking at the flickering lights in the distance with a worrisome look on her face. She was worried about Gougou.

She hadn’t taken Gougou to Stone Village, for fear of endangering him if an earthquake occurred on the road. But when the earthquake struck, she wasn’t with Gougou.

As she was thinking of Gougou, a heartbreaking cry rang out: "Mother! Mother!"

Listening to this, Nanzhi’s heart felt like it was being cut by a knife, it hurt so much.
