Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 272 Dispute
Chapter 272: Chapter 272 Dispute
"Alright, alright, now go to sleep," said Lin Yicheng, tucking in the three children before rising to leave the room.
How could simple commoners like them possibly endure such natural and human disasters?
Thinking back to the scenes they witnessed while fleeing from famine, they were nothing but a small part of the lucky ones.
Lin Yicheng was somewhat absent-minded. He heard the door close behind him and then climbed out again.
"Zhiyu, why did you ask uncle to bring back that little beggar?" Lin Jian asked with a pout and displeasure in his tone.
"Yeah, Zhiyu, my dad said you were the one who told him to bring back the thief," added Lin Zihan, nodding in agreement. Both brothers then turned their heads simultaneously towards Zhiyu.
"He was the one who told me where the beads were," replied Zhiyu, his voice muffled by the blanket over his head.
"But he was the one who stole them in the first place," Lin Jian continued.
He didn’t like thieves, even if they were pitiable—it just meant they were pitiable thieves.
The ones who had their stuff stolen were also pitiable.
"I don’t know, I just thought he didn’t seem that bad," Little Zhiyu admitted, feeling somewhat thwarted by his brother’s words.
"Oh well, let’s wait until his wounds heal, then we can let him go," Lin Jian mumbled.
Since the thief is wounded, we’ll wait for him to recover before chasing him away.
The three children muttered quietly for a while longer before falling asleep one after the other.
Having tidied up Nanzhi and made sure she’s no longer vomiting blood, Chen Qiulan, and Sun Cui finally retreated to their rooms for rest. Lin’s mother stayed and lay down next to her daughter.
Even though the doctor assured her that everything was fine, she remained anxious about her daughter.
She fears that her chubby handmaid might suddenly leave, just like before.
Nanzhi felt dizzy and weak all over, her head feels so heavy as if it was filled with lead.
Only after throwing up something did she feel somewhat better and managed to fall asleep.
Lin’s mother was awakened by the heat in the middle of the night.
Since she had grown older, she became a light sleeper. Nanzhi moves quite a lot during sleep, wiggling her way into her mother’s arms.
Looking at Nanzhi’s flushed face, Lin’s mother sighed, caressed her head lovingly and then quietly watched over her.
The girl had changed her appearance and her body shape after she returned.
Though similarities remained, differences were also noticeable.
The next morning, each member of the Lin family busied themselves with their own tasks, only asking about Nanzhi’s health when they saw Lin’s mother.
"She’s still sleeping, she’s okay now," Mother Lin replied, rubbing her numb shoulder.
Nanzhi’s head was really heavy.
After being pressed down for an entire night, her arm was about to get crushed.
" As long as she is fine," Sun Cui nodded, before mentioning something else, "Mother, I just collected the eggs, and I found that the river clam in the wooden basin is missing."
Mother Lin was slightly startled and then nodded, "It’s okay, I released it into the river yesterday."
"Does Zhiyu know about it?" Sun Cui asked hesitantly, considering that the big river clam was bought by Zhiyu, in case the child would fuss about it being missing.
"He knows. Now stop busying yourself. I’ll cook. Go rest. You still have to set up the stall later," Mother Lin gestured Sun Cui away to the hall, and she started to cook.
There wasn’t too much to think about for breakfast. Boiling a pot of porridge and frying two dishes would do.
After breakfast, Lin’s father took Lin Yicheng to the carpentry shop. Lin Ercheng took the three children to the academy. Chen Qiulan and Sun Cui, the two sisters-in-law, took their belongings and went out to buy vegetables and set up their stall.
For a time, only Mother Lin and the soundly sleeping Nanzhi were left at home.
After tidying up the dishes, finding Nanzhi still motionless in bed, Mother Lin decided to sit down with her basket of needlework by her side.
She needs to sew a bag with the character for "luck" for her daughter to carry, in hopes of avoiding any illnesses.
The staff of Sanweiju were all a little distracted early in the morning.
After all, Aze and Liao Da returned late last night, so they must have been questioned curiously.
As a result, they learned about the fainting of the Lin’s head of household from Liao Da.
"Uncle Ping, do you think Master Lin will be alright?" An Wazi has been a little sleepless since he learned about Nanzhi’s fainting. He managed to fall asleep in the latter half of the night, only to awaken again when the sky was still hazy grey.
He dreamed that the head of household had an accident, that they were sold to another place and were killed halfway there.
"Why are you, a young kid, worrying about these things? The masters are good people, good people often have good luck, nothing will happen." Xu Chou looked at An Wazi’s naive and foolish expression, unable to resist ruffling his hair.
His two masters are both good people. How could anything happen to them?
He believed that Heaven would bless them.
"What are you all worrying about? At worst, Master Lin has just fallen ill. Master Shen is still in charge of us. Sanweiju can still run. What are you doing with your heads down?"
Uncle Ping looked at everyone’s listless faces and knew exactly what they were worrying about.
Isn’t it just fear that if something happens to the boss, Sanweiju may collapse, and they will not be paid?
"But...but Master Shen...he, he did not come..." Li Jun muttered in a small voice.
Didn’t he come to Yan City to find work, wasn’t it in order to earn money to marry a wife?
He had already agreed to a marriage and was to bring her home in three months. He surely can’t end up not getting paid and be unable to provide a wedding gift!
Lun Daliang was also somewhat hesitant.
Sanweiju already paid less monthly wages than other places. If the restaurant really couldn’t keep going, it would be better for him to switch places sooner rather than later.
"What do you mean by that?" Aze furrowed his brow, a cool look in his eyes as he looked at Li Jun.
"Well...well of course you’re not worried. You’ve signed a lifetime contract. But we haven’t! Even if you don’t get paid, it’s not a problem for you. I need to get married!" Li Jun, who was only a few years younger than Aze, and was of a restless age. He became rather annoyed under Aze’s scrutiny.
"Li Jun, you have gone a bit too far with your words." Wang Sheng’s face also darkened a bit.
Except for Uncle Ping, he was the oldest here. Even though Aze and others had signed lifetime contracts, they had been living together for half a month and got along quite well.
Only Li Jun arrived the day before yesterday, so naturally, they were not exactly good friends.
"It’s the truth! Where are there female heads of households! Can’t you all see that the money is managed by Master Lin? What can Master Shen do, can she give us our wages?"
The teenager’s temper flares, completely unheeding.
Shen Miaomiao entered the backyard and heard all this.
Everyone looked somewhat uneasy when they saw her, especially Li Jun, whose face was flushed with embarrassment.
"Master...Master Shen."
"This is your wages for the past few days. Sister Nanzhi told me to give it to you all today." Shen Miaomiao only smiled, took out the money pouch, and said nothing more.
"Wait, Master..." Uncle Ping was a little startled, he was the one who managed these matters, and Master Lin never mentioned this before.
"However, we have a lot of work to do today. After we finish our work tonight, we will distribute it. Let’s prepare things first." Shen Miaomiao swung the money bag in her hand.
Upon hearing the jingling of copper plates and silver, everyone suddenly regained their spirits.
Since they were able to pay the wages, it should be fine.
Li Jun felt his face turning red as far as his neck. He wanted to say something, but due to his boyish pride, he did nothing but bowed his head and went back to work.
"Master Shen, this wage...?" Uncle Ping only hesitated to speak when everyone else had left.
"Let’s distribute it tonight." Shen Miaomiao sighed.
Thankfully, she had thought of this last night...
