Chapter 271: Excessive Nourishment
Chapter 271: Chapter 271: Excessive Nourishment
The physician had just brought some medicinal herbs for Xiaomi when Chen Qiulan summoned him over to attend to Nanzhi.
"Madam, please slow down," said the physician, who had just been dragged by Lin Ercheng all the way here and hadn’t even had a chance to catch his breath. He could only call out as he saw Chen Qiulan rushing towards the back yard.
"Doctor, we can’t delay! She’s vomiting blood!" The mere thought of Nanzhi speaking while blood kept flowing from her mouth gave Chen Qiulan goosebumps.
If they delayed any further, her sister-in-law could bleed to death!
Seeing his sister-in-law in such a state, Lin Ercheng guessed that something had happened with Nanzhi. He paid no attention to Xiaomi on the bed, hastily shoved the medical herbs into his arms, and went out of the side room.
The physician saw the person on the bed and his pupils dilated in shock. He was about to retreat instinctively, but Lin Ercheng blocked his way.
"This...this..." The physician was almost fifty, his white beard shivering as he spoke.
He thought, could it be they’ve killed someone and now want to silence him?
"Doctor, please check on my daughter." Lin’s mother said with pain in her face, pointing towards Nanzhi on the bed.
With the crowd around him, the physician finally decided to approach, having ascertained that the person in the bed wasn’t a goblin.
"Doctor, sorry to trouble you. I keep telling them I’m fine," said Nanzhi with a wry smile, before coughing up another mouthful of blood and slipping back into unconsciousness.
With her asleep, the physician wiped the sweat from his forehead and reached out to take her pulse.
The Lin family watched the doctor anxiously, noting that he neither sighed nor shook his head. They were just about to breathe a sigh of relief when they noticed his brows furrowing.
Lin’s mother’s heart skipped a beat. Trembling, she asked, "Doctor, my daughter...is...is there something wrong?"
The doctor didn’t reply, he checked her pulse again before finally withdrawing his hand with a mutter.
"Doctor, what’s the matter?"
Lin Yicheng was also anxious but dared not show anger toward the physician. He finally asked.
"The patient is not in a serious condition. She has just overindulged in tonics causing excessive internal heat," replied the doctor, sipping the tea that Chen Qiulan had brought him. "Let her rest for a few days and stick to a light diet. Tonics are good for women, but she shouldn’t overdo it. She mustn’t indiscriminately consume things like ginseng."
Just as Shen Zhiyu was about to protest, she was silenced by Lin Yicheng. Lin’s mother couldn’t help but worry and pointed to the blood on the bed, "Doctor, she has vomited so much blood. Will she be okay?"
"According to her pulse, she should be fine. She just needs to get some rest." The doctor looked somewhat relieved after finishing his cup of tea.
"Thank you, doctor." Lin Ercheng handed over some silver and led the physician out before returning to Nanzhi’s room.
The room had a faint smell of blood, but without the unpleasant rusty smell, it wasn’t too bad.
"Eldest, tell us, what have you given your sister to eat? You nourished her into this state?"
Lin’s mother cast a stern look at her eldest son, not believing for a moment that Xiaohe would give something like this.
"It was the pearl that Xiaohe gave," Lin Yicheng scratched his head, unsure of what to say.
All he did was take a brief look at the pearl, a small round thing no different from an ordinary pearl.
It was later given to the maid Zhiyu to eat, and that was all he knew.
"Xiaohe, how did you let Nanzhi end up like this?" Mother Lin pointed at Nanzhi, who was lying on the bed, grinning foolishly, while vomiting blood.
"Grandma, grandma, it was me who fed mom." Little Zhiyu watched as his uncle was scolded and strained to remove the hand covering his mouth.
"It was the bead brother gave me, he told me to keep it carefully. When mom was sick before, it was because brother fed her the bead that she got better," Little Zhiyu tried to explain.
"When mom was sick, my bead was stolen. Uncle took me to retrieve it."
Upon hearing this, Mother Lin sized up her eldest son before finally picking up Zhiyu.
"Zhiyu, you can’t just eat anything. Look at your mother now. This is what happens when you eat carelessly, understand?"
Zhiyu glanced at the foolish Nanzhi and meekly nodded his head.
"Mother, don’t blame Zhiyu, he was just worried about Nanzhi. She’s still okay, isn’t she?" Lin ErCheng hastily spoke up for Zhiyu.
"When did I blame our Zhiyu?" Mother Lin gave her second son a glance and then handed Zhiyu to Lin YiCheng.
"Eldest son, you take Zhiyu to bed. ErCheng, move Nanzhi to the next room, and those of you who are older, get rid of the bedding in this room, it’s a mess. I’ll go change Nanzhi’s clothes." After saying this, Mother Lin wanted to leave the room but then she remembered her husband and turned back to pinch his waist.
With sensitive waist muscles, Father Lin woke up in an instant. Seeing that the room was left with him and his wife, he was a bit bewildered.
"Where has Nanzhi... Nanzhi gone? What happened to her?" Father Lin asked as he rubbed his waist, pointing to the empty bed.
"If you want to sleep, go back to your room. I’m going to change Nanzhi’s clothes." Mother Lin sighed looking at her husband’s look, she knew he was also worried about their daughter, and then added,
"The doctor said, there is nothing wrong with Nanzhi, she just over-nourished herself."
"If there’s nothing wrong, that’s good, that’s good." Father Lin also breathed a sigh of relief. Knowing that he couldn’t be of much help, he took two bowls of noodles from the table to the kitchen before going to bed.
When Lin YiCheng was taking Little Zhiyu back to their room, he saw his son and nephew chatting under the quilt, with no intention of sleeping.
"You two little rascals, it’s the middle of the night and you’re not sleeping, what are you doing?" After setting Little Zhiyu on the bed, Lin YiCheng gave the two children a smack on their buttocks.
"Father! Why did you bring that thief back home." Lin Zihan was still angry, and once again being smacked by his father, he got even more upset.
"I’ve said that Little Zhiyu’s brother asked me to bring him home." Lin Yicheng explained, upon seeing his son’s displeasure he sighed and sat down beside the bed.
"Doudou, I know you don’t like the child, but he’s also a poor creature. If I had arrived a little later, he would have been beaten to death."
Lin Yicheng ruffled his son’s hair, "That boy is the same age as Maomao. If he was from a normal family, he might be studying with you guys at the academy. But he’s unfortunate, he’s been taught to do bad things."
Lin Zihan bowed his head and stopped talking, but Lin Jian butted in, "Uncle, even though he became a thief because of his bad fortune, he’s the one who stole things, not us."
"That’s sharp thinking." Lin YiCheng was a bit lost for words. He pinched Lin Jian’s somewhat chubby cheek, "There are many unfortunate people in this world, we can’t help and save every one of them. But he’s of your age, if we can teach him to be better, it may avoid a lot of trouble."
"Okay then," Lin Jian conceded awkwardly.
He couldn’t fully understand what his uncle said, but some parts he could grasp.
"Uncle, why didn’t anyone come to help us when we were fleeing?" Zhiyu, who had been quietly tucked in his blanket, suddenly asked.
Thinking of the ordeal they had been through two years ago, Lin YiCheng fell silent.
