Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 25 Li Tian Gets Beaten Up_1
Chapter 25: Chapter 25 Li Tian Gets Beaten Up_1
Not just the crowd outside the gate, but even the elderly Wang woman eavesdropping in her courtyard was terrified by Lin Ercheng’s hatchet.
Of course, she knew that Ms. Wu went next door again. She didn’t interfere thinking she would get some silver at best; if she didn’t get the silver, that was not her problem, after all, it was Ms. Wu who went over there on her own.
She was a bit upset to see Ms. Liao return, considering her passive daughter-in-law as tight-lipped as a sawed-off gourd. However, as she was about to scold her, she heard the gate of her own courtyard being split open with a hatchet.
"Who...who are you?"
Despite her blustering, she had never faced such a situation before. Holding back fear, she asked trembling and stuttering.
"Call out your family’s man," Lin Ercheng demanded, the same grim expression on his face as he looked at the elderly woman in the courtyard.
He knew her. She was notoriously obnoxious, and he suspected that she had bullied his sister too.
Li Tian, who had until then been sleeping, heard the noise and thought it was his younger brother chopping wood and disturbing his sleep. As he walked outside, he grumbled, "What’s going on? Why can’t a person get some sleep?"
Only when he saw the crowd at the gate did he seem to wake up. He glanced skeptically at Ms. Wu, who was being blocked outside by the Lin brothers.
"Who are you?" Li Tian looked from the Lin brothers to Ms. Wu, who was cowering outside the gate. Suddenly, he accused, "Well, Wu Zhaodi, you are sneaking around behind my back, aren’t you?"
"So you’re this woman’s man?" Lin Yicheng was sizing up Li Tian, judging whether he was worth the fight.
Li Tian naturally sensed the hostility from these two men but thought that this was his home and felt no fear. He sneered, "Oh, so you’re the adulterer. Don’t you know who I am?"
Lin Yicheng, assured of his judgement, looked at his brother, "That’s him."
Of course, Lin Ercheng understood his brother’s thinking. He swung the hatchet again, and the door of the Li Family was completely smashed into wooden debris.
"What...what are you doing!" The elderly Wang woman shrieked in fear as the Lin brothers stepped through the gate of her home, "You are robbers and bandits! I will report to the authorities!"
Without even looking at the elderly Wang woman, Lin Ercheng walked towards the trembling Li Tian.
He grabbed Li Tian by the collar and dragged him to the gate so that Nanzhi outside could get a good look.
The women around Nanzhi also moved closer, completely blocking Ms. Wu from the view.
"Big brother, second brother." Nanzhi called out to her brothers, attracting Aunt Liu’s attention.
"Girl." She wanted to tell Nanzhi to keep quiet, knowing that if she didn’t let the Li family taste some bitterness, she and Gougou would have to suffer in the future. But, she just called out in a soft voice.
"Just don’t beat him so badly that it costs me silver." Nanzhi spoke up louder, even seeming slightly gleeful in her tone.
The gossiping women outside the door began to whisper amongst themselves.
Earlier claims that the Lin girl had changed were met with disbelief. Since her marriage into Lihua Village five years ago, she had always been known for her gentle nature and had silently borne all the torment from Ms. Wu.
If it were them, having lost their husband and raising a child alone, they would fight tooth and nail against anyone who dared to bully them, wouldn’t they?
Considering that her family had such competent brothers, why should she suffer such humiliation?
Upon hearing this, Aunt Liu felt satisfied and looked on, expecting a good show.
"Got it." Both Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng replied simultaneously.
Knowing just where to hit for maximum pain without causing serious injury was something they understood well.
Fist to flesh, it took only a short while for the courtyard of the Li family to echo with Li Tian’s wails, his cries profoundly piercing.
Granny Wang was a selfish woman. She cherished her son, but her fear of being caught in the aftermath made him weep on the sidelines.
Ms. Wu, who was initially blocked by the crowd, was now too frightened to enter the house. She just stood outside, watching as her husband was beaten, screaming in agony.
Inside the house, Li Liang, who had been caring for his elderly father, wanted to intervene, but his father held him back. Ms. Liao carried a pair of serene eyes and held their daughters tightly to spare them from the shock.
"Father..."
"Let them beat him." The old man’s gaze was as calm as a pond, as if the man screaming outside was not his once favored eldest son.
"But..."Li Liang glanced at his father, then at his wife and daughters, and eventually withdrew his step, deciding not to interfere.
"Ah Liang, ask Li Zheng to come over later." The old man instructed firmly. He had come to his realization over the night—his decades-long marriage couldn’t withstand three taels of silver.
"Hm." Li Liang nodded, he was always obedient and compliant to his family’s wishes, and this time was no exception.
"Stop it! Stop beating him!" Granny Wang sat on the side, screaming, "My son, my poor son..."
Nanzhi glanced at Li Tian, his body colored with bruises, then turned her gaze towards Ms. Wu, who was just outside of the crowd.
"Wu Zhaodi, I, Lin Nanzhi, am not scared of you. If you dare to cause trouble at my home again, be careful, next time it could be you lying on the ground."
After she finished, with a dismissive snort, Nanzhi called her brothers to return to their own home.
The women who had gathered to watch the spectacle gradually dispersed. They had enjoyed today’s show thoroughly and couldn’t wait to recount the events.
Back at home, Nanzhi quickly poured two bowls of water. She looked apologetic as she said, "Big Brother, Second Brother, I’m sorry for the trouble today."
Lin Yicheng waved his hand dismissively, taking a big gulp from the bowl before responding, "Silly girl. Even though you are married, you are still our sister. If something happens and you reported to us, how could we as elder brothers, not help?"
"Exactly, if it were not for today’s visit, we wouldn’t have known how difficult your life is currently." Lin Ercheng agreed, but the remark left a sour taste in his mouth.
This was because they felt partially responsible for their sister’s poor circumstances. If they had visited her more often in the past year, would she have suffered from the bullying by that crazy woman next door?
"It’s not that bad. Thanks to Gougou, we are still managing. Shouldn’t I make sure to bring some food home?"
The previous tenant of this body would rather lead a hand-to-mouth existence with Gougou than burden her family.
Although the original owner’s approach wasn’t ideal, Nanzhi had the capabilities she needed to survive with Gougou.
After the siblings chatted for a while, the Lin brothers left. Before they departed, Nanzhi gave each of them a pearl, claiming that it came from the River Clam, and suggested that they bring it back to their mother to decide whether to sell or keep it.
The two brothers were amazed by the lustrous pearl. They knew the value of pearls – the town jewelry shop sold them for two taels a piece. They marveled at their sister’s good fortune.
It was only after the two brothers had left that Nanzhi felt a sense of relief. She had been orphaned at an early age and only had her grandmother. Having new family members felt a bit awkward, and she was not quite used to spend time with them alone.
After today’s episode, the Li family should stay quiet for a while.
Thinking about the undisturbed days of accumulating provisions ahead, Nanzhi felt the beauty of the day was reflected in the clear blue sky.
The situation at the Li’s household became tense.
After Nanzhi and the Lin brothers had left, Li Liang emerged from the house to find Li Zheng. Witnessing the disheveled state of his mother and brother stirred feelings of uneasiness. After carrying Li Tian into the house, Li Liang hurriedly departed.
Frightened into silence, Ms. Wu feared that speaking out could lead to further turmoil.
