Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 24 Breaking the Door_1
Chapter 24: Chapter 24 Breaking the Door_1
Unfortunately, Nanzhi didn’t open the door; instead, it was opened by two tall, burly men.
The two men, with stern looks on their faces, made Ms. Wu a bit apprehensive as they stood at the door.
Remembering her purpose, she didn’t dare to flee. Instead, she asked, "Who are you two? Tell that young widow to come out!"
Lin Yicheng found the term "young widow" very grating, so he asked in a deep voice, "And who are you?"
Ms. Wu looked at the men, her mind spinning. She hadn’t seen them before and was certain they weren’t from the village. Could it be that the young widow was so lonely she’d resorted to adultery?
Seizing what she thought was a piece of incriminating evidence, Ms. Wu stood straight up and said, "You adulterers sure have guts. Now that you’re here, give me three taels of silver. Otherwise, I’ll broadcast your affair."
Lin Yicheng, already simmering with anger, turned as black as the bottom of a pan upon hearing this. The woman’s words were as foul as dung.
Seeing that neither man responded, Ms. Wu assumed that her allegations had frightened them. She continued, "You two have fallen for that young widow’s looks, haven’t you? Give me three taels of silver and I’ll pretend I know nothing about this affair. If you don’t, I’ll ensure everyone in the village finds out. I’d like to see what you do then."
Nanzhi stood behind her two elder brothers, with no intention of stepping forward.
Her two older brothers weren’t exactly refined gentlemen, but they were protective. The Lin family was notorious for standing up for their own, and she wanted to experience being protected for once.
"Say one more offensive word," Lin Yicheng rolled up his sleeves, revealing his well-built muscles. It looked like he would lay into Ms. Wu if she said anything more.
Ms. Wu had been beaten up just that morning, and her body was still sore. Seeing Lin Yicheng’s threatening posture, she quivered involuntarily.
"You, you guys..."
Ms. Wu couldn’t understand why the men were so defiant.
"Ms. Wu, what madness are you up to now?"
Mother Liu had just returned from carrying a basket of chestnuts when she saw Ms. Wu standing at the gates of Nanzhi’s courtyard yet again. Concerned that she was there to cause trouble, Mother Liu quickly put down her things and brought her young son with her.
Upon noticing the two men standing by Nanzhi’s door, Mother Liu was taken aback. "What the..."
"Mother Liu, you see now. The shameless widow, Lin, has been caught in the act of committing adultery by me. Look, her lover is threatening to attack me. He should be bound and thrown into a pigsty."
A look of triumph spread across Wu’s face. Look, the Lin lady you all admire was caught bringing her lover home, and I was the one who caught her.
Nanzhi only stepped out after hearing Mother Liu’s voice. "Mother Liu."
"Girl, who are they?"
Mother Liu asked the question in a low voice, looking hesitantly at the two men, who were as imposing as door gods.
"They’re my two brothers. My mother sent them to check on me and Gougou."
Nanzhi replied with a smile. Meanwhile, the color drained from Ms. Wu’s face.
"I thought so." Mother Liu patted the back of Nanzhi’s hand. Her gaze towards Ms. Wu was no longer friendly.
"Ms. Wu Zhaodi, you seem to enjoy making a fool of yourself. The Lin girl found a chestnut forest and was planning to inform the villagers about it, but you decided to be clever and run up the mountain, resulting in your father-in-law getting bitten by a snake. And now, you’ve come to ask the Lin girl for silver. Who do you think you are?"
Upon hearing Mother Liu’s explanation, the Lin brothers finally understood the situation. They wondered why this woman had been demanding silver the moment she opened her mouth. So, she was trying to blackmail their sister.
"Who do you belong to? Call your man out." Lin Yicheng didn’t mince his words. He didn’t hit women, but he could certainly hit men.
Unlike Lihua Village, which usually followed the rule of minimizing big issues and trivializing small ones, Stone Village would usually resolve any issue immediately. Afterward, they could still sit together and chat over a meal.
The two Lin brothers were both tall and sturdy, standing there at over six feet tall with stern faces, they were quite intimidating.
As more villagers returned, they saw people standing in front of Nanzhi’s courtyard and hurried over.
"Lady Liu, what’s happening?" a woman asked, frightened by the intimidating Lin brothers.
"The Lin girl’s relatives came to visit, but they bumped into Ms. Wu trying to swindle them." Liu didn’t say anything else, merely stating that Ms. Wu tried to swindle and got caught by the brothers.
"Swindling? Again about Uncle Li’s incident?" The woman felt surprised, as she thought the issue had been resolved after last night. She never expected Ms. Wu to come and stir up trouble again.
The East Mountain was just there; it wasn’t as if the Lin family forced them to go to the mountain. If they suffered due to their own greed, they had no one to blame but themselves. How could she demand the Lins to give her half of their chestnuts if she had taken them?
Quite a number of people already knew about it from last night, and today, while they were on the East Mountain picking chestnuts, the actions of Ms. Wu’s family were rehashed.
Old Lady Wang’s petty schemes from the past were also brought up and criticized.
Now, everyone in the village knew of the shameful deeds of the Li family.
"My father-in-law got bitten by a snake because of her, now his leg is about to be amputated, why shouldn’t she pay compensation! "
Feeling the contemptuous glances from the villagers, Ms. Wu suddenly exploded, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.
"That’s because you got greedy. Lin girl kindly told us about the chestnut forest, none of the villagers got into trouble, maybe your father-in-law got what he did because of the shady things you and your mother-in-law did. It’s retribution."
The woman spat in disdain, thinking it was almost filthy to look at Ms. Wu. She couldn’t believe she was living in the same village as such a person.
"Sister-in-law, let’s go home."
Ms. Liao was scolded by Old Lady Wang this morning, she spent the day working on an empty stomach, feeding her two daughters and father-in-law medicine, and then carrying them on her back up East Mountain to collect chestnuts.
Now, coming back only to see her own sister-in-law making trouble at the Lins again, she felt drained.
She couldn’t understand why her sister-in-law and mother-in-law couldn’t just leave the Lin widow and orphan alone. The family certainly had enough silver, yet they were so stingy with their father’s medical expenses, stirring up troubles until the whole village was in the know.
Seeing that the crowd was going against her, Ms. Wu was already holding a grudge. As soon as she caught sight of Ms. Liao, she snapped instantly, treating the latter as a vent: "Who asked for your hypocritical advice?"
"Then, make a scene. If it satisfies you, then good."
Ms. Liao carried her two daughters and bypassed the crowd, heading back to the Li’s.
Seeing Ms. Liao leaving, Ms. Wu didn’t know what to do, stuck where she was with the Lin brothers before her.
"Enough, call your husband out." Lin Yicheng lost his patience.
If this woman consistently bullied his sister, he and his brother could not sit idly by.
"I... I was wrong, I’ll leave now," Ms. Wu’s body quivered slightly, genuinely afraid that the two men might lay a hand on her.
Though Li Tian appeared to be tall and imposing, he was always lazy and had no strength. Even if he hit her, she wouldn’t suffer too much. But the two brothers of Lin family, she probably couldn’t withstand a single hit from them.
Though they were brothers, Lin Ercheng was more patient and collected than his older brother, and deducing that the woman with the two children already referred to Ms. Wu as sister-in-law, was likely family.
Thinking of this, Lin Ercheng picked up the ax lying by the firewood near the courtyard and went towards the same door that the woman had entered.
Ms. Wu was petrified by Lin Ercheng’s actions, too scared to even let out a scream, she saw Lin Ercheng raise his ax and strike it towards the door of the Li residence.
Though they were brothers, Lin Yicheng always tricked his younger brother into doing most of the work, hence, both brothers appeared to be similar in size, but Ercheng was stronger.
With one swing of the axe, half of the Li’s door was destroyed.
