Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife
Chapter 154: Falling Rocks

Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Falling Rocks

"Why are you staring at me? I saved your life!"

Xiaohe’s handsome face was full of grievance as he chastised Nanzhi with accusing eyes.

Look at this, doing good deeds could turn out wrong too!

Even though Xiaohe’s voice still resembled that of a boy’s, Wang Jingzhi shivered slightly upon hearing it.

As he seemed to calm down, Shen Miaomiao felt helpless and could only clean the rice grains from the quilt. It couldn’t be eaten anyway, so she scattered it into the basket to feed the chickens. As for the damp corner of the quilt...

Nanzhi couldn’t help feeling a pang of heartache watching this.

The weather was frightful. They only had this one quilt. Initially, it was big enough for her and Zhiyu. But, seeing that the Shen Family’s donkey cart was too small, she had Miaomiao join them, the three of them could just fit comfortably.

However, now with the addition of Xiaohe and Wang Jingzhi, these two men couldn’t possibly sleep bundled with them.

With this in mind, Nanzhi sighed bleakly.

But she could not just abandon someone she had saved.

The quilt, having served as a cushion for over a month and bearing the hardship of the journey, had lost its original color. But thankfully, it was thick, and the wet patch had not seeped through.

Nanzhi held Zhiyu silently, but Shen Miaomiao felt guilty looking at them.

Had she not found Wang Jingzhi, Sister Nanzhi would not be in this predicament. However, their childhood affections wouldn’t let her turn a blind eye to saving a life.

"Forget it, forget it, looking at you, I could not be bothered to stay with you." Xiaohe huffed coldly and hopped off the mule cart. The moment the curtain was lifted, a gust of cold air rushed in and Nanzhi couldn’t help but shiver.

It was truly chilling outside.

At a spot three hours away from Nanzhi and the others, both the Lin and Shen families had stopped for a rest.

"Father, go sit in the cart!" Lin Ercheng’s voice was hoarse amidst the ceaseless wind and snow, urging his father to find warmth in the cart.

Yet, like a stubborn child, his father clung to the frame of the cart, unwilling to get on.

That was a place for his daughter-in-law and grandchildren. How could he, a man, take that space and hide from the cold?

"Father-in-law, please get on!" Sun Cui jumped down from the cart, bracing the cold wind, and shouted out loud.

"Maomao will be scared if he’s alone in the cart!"

When his daughter-in-law mentioned his grandson, Lin’s father seemed slightly swayed, but stubbornly continued walking ahead, refusing to get on the cart.

"Stubborn old man! Get on the cart!"

Seeing the staggering steps of her husband, Lin’s mother lost her patience and lifted the curtain to yell at him.

"What are you showing off for? If you work too hard and crumble, do you expect us to accompany you in death?"

As Lin’s mother voiced out her concerns, her voice carried a tremble of impending tears. Seizing the moment of his father’s hesitation, Lin Ercheng managed to lift him onto the cart. By the time his father had grasped what was happening, Maomao had already tugged at his arm.

"Grandpa! Maomao is scared!"

The child was clever. Knowing that his grandpa loved him, he quickly voiced out his fears. Sure enough, when his grandson hugged him, Lin’s father finally settled in the cart.

Upon seeing him finally seated, the younger family members heaved a sigh of relief. Ever since their father’s health had deteriorated after the descent from Mount Qing Fenghan, any further stubbornness on his part would lead to consequences that no one could bear.

By lunchtime, when everyone was too tired to continue and stopped to rest, Lin’s mother had already sewn two vests. Even though they only provided warm for the chest and back, it was better than nothing.

"Father, you and the second son’s family put on these vests first, so you won’t catch a cold."

Lin’s mother handed the vests to Chen Qiulan and asked her to put them on in the cart.

The thick clothing they had was already worn, so she only had two thinly padded short vests left. Both of her daughter-in-laws were skinny, these rabbit fur-lined vests would be warm if worn against the skin.

Chen Qiulan’s eyes welled up with tears as she received the vest. She only nodded then returned to the cart to change.

The thin vest, lined with a layer of rabbit fur, felt warm against her inner wear.

After putting on her own, Sun Cui silently thanked her luck for marrying into the Lin Family and having such a good mother-in-law.

Along the way, she had witnessed countless young women being beaten. There were even families where, after the death of their men in the flood, the nasty mother-in-laws took to battering their daughters-in-law, accusing them of being husband-killers.

Usually, each family minded their own business behind closed doors; it was only during these terrible disasters when one could distinguish genuine kindness from false pretense.

After eating and resting for an hour, noting that the wind and snow were gradually subsiding, both families set off once again.

The snow on the road was trampled into the mud, the white color swiftly turning into muddy puddles.

As Zhui Yue galloped in and out of the woods with Shen Wenchen on its back, sprays of snow splashed up from its hooves, sinking deep into the slush beneath. The group had disappeared into the dense forest, waiting for someone’s arrival.

After two weeks of journeying day and night, coupled with festering wounds, Shen Wenchen was now pushing his limits to continue. Everything seemed blurry, but he thought he spotted clusters of figures hidden amidst the vast whiteness ahead. This prompted him to gather what was left of his waning strength.

As they drew closer, the concealed figures each held aloft their arrows. Eight bows immediately aimed in their direction.

Sensing danger, Shen Wenchen gripped the hilt of his sword.

Just then, Zhui Yue neighed and turned around to run.

Shen Wenchen wasn’t clear why his horse had fled, and just as he heard a rumbling noise from the woods.

Immediately after, snow from the mountains started falling rapidly, and large rocks began shifting, rolling downhill enveloped with snow.

Zhui Yue sensing the danger, took Shen Wenchen and bolted. Although it was a close call, he escaped the danger. However, the eight men weren’t as fortunate. Without a chance to yell for help, they were crushed to a pulp beneath the falling rocks.

The disaster came swiftly but ended just as fast. In less than a quarter of an hour, everything returned to quiet.

Looking at the collapsed white landscape, Shen Wenchen maintained his cool demeanor. One could call that fate.

Packing away his sword, Shen Wenchen looked at the path from whence he came and tugged at the reins to enter into another route.

"Xiaohe, you are a System, after all. Don’t lower yourself to his level," Nanzhi said, instinctively retracting her neck to the sudden chill after finishing her sentence.

"Why should I back down!" Thinking of his body, which was only fourteen years old, Xiaohe puffed out his chest in indignation.

Speaking of which, he had saved Wang Jingzhi’s life!

Why should he, the life-saving benefactor, yield to him?

Moreover, he was younger than Wang Jingzhi. Why should the younger one be the one to suffer?

Nanzhi found his self-righteous behavior rather amusing.

He was a System, after all. Why was he having a squabble with a patient?

Moreover, it was Xiaohe who changed Wu Jingzhi’s clothes. Nanzhi didn’t believe that he wouldn’t know what had befallen Wang Jingzhi.

Remembering the kind-hearted, gentle young man now reduced to such a state, Nanzhi felt a wave of melancholy.

All this has happened in just two months.
