Chapter 132: Did Your Dad Run Away with Someone? _1

Chapter 132: Chapter 132: Did Your Dad Run Away with Someone? _1

The mule cart came to a halt, and Nanzhi had no plans of continuing on. She intended to stay in place and wait for Chi Sheng to come and pick up the people.

She didn’t believe Chi Sheng would let Yuanbao go down the mountain with them.

During a time of famine, desperate people could do anything.

She even planned on hiding Zhiyu in the cart, to prevent any trouble.

Lin Ercheng noticed his younger sister wasn’t following and saw their cart was parked by the roadside. He quickly called his older brother to halt.

"What’s going on?"

Lin Yicheng heard his brother calling, thought there was some trouble, and quickly stopped the cart to run back.

"Pang Ya stopped there, I don’t know why," Lin Ercheng said, pointing at the two carts that had stopped behind them.

"I’ll go check, you watch the cart," Lin Yicheng said before running back, leaving Lin Ercheng alone.

"Ercheng, where did your older brother go?" their mother asked, peering out of the cart.

"Pang Ya fell behind, my older brother went to see what happened," Lin Ercheng replied, as he grabbed some grass from the roadside to feed the mule.

The mules could still eat young grass now, but once they left the mountains and entered the main road, there’d be neither grass nor even tree leaves for them to eat.

Their mother watched Lin Yicheng run towards her daughter in the distance, her heart filled with anxiety.

She had wanted her husband to drive the cart, so Ercheng could drive Pang Ya’s mule.

Yet somehow, their father fell limp as soon as he got on the mule cart.

Upon inquiry, she discovered that he’d gotten dizzy while preparing the fields that morning.

He was already over fifty years old, and hadn’t rested properly for more than half a month. His lack of work recently hadn’t been apparent, but now his bout of fieldwork had utterly exhausted him.

Their father, huddled in the cart, felt a chill on his back. He quietly glanced at his wife and upon seeing she wasn’t looking at him, he relaxed a little.

When he had been working in the field, he felt energetic! But why did he feel so sapped once he got on the cart...

Their mother just shook her head lightly, her heart filled with apprehension about letting Pang Ya drive the cart once they left the mountain and reached the main road...

"Pang Ya, what’s going on? Why did you stop... " Upon seeing the little one sitting in the cart, Lin Yicheng’s speech halted abruptly.

"Uncle!" Yuanbao greeted him cheerfully, his call brimming with sincerity.

Lin Yicheng’s eyes widened, and with a confused expression, he turned to look at Nanzhi.

"He snuck up here on his own," rubbing her throbbing brow, Nanzhi finally sighed and explained.

"Shouldn’t we hurry back and return him?" Lin Yicheng asked, looking at the little child in the cart.

"Let’s wait here. I think Chi Sheng and the others should have noticed the child’s disappearance by now. Have our mother and the others get off and rest, it’s suffocating inside the cart."

The weather was oppressively hot, making it feel like a steamer inside the cart.

"All right." Lin Yicheng nodded, then went to notify his brother.

As soon as their mother descended from the cart, she began organizing the dry food with her two daughters-in-law.

They had forgotten to do this on the mountain. It would be better to do more of it now than waste time stopping to cook everyday. They were afraid of inviting problems.

Aunt Guihua and Ms. Li were also busily baking pancakes, while Shen Miaomiao helped by passing things on the side.

"Yuanbao, how did you manage to sneak in here?" Nanzhi frowned at the little girl in the cart, her audacity was truly astounding, seemingly not afraid of any danger.

"Yuanbao climbed in herself." The little girl seemed to realise that she had done something wrong only at that point, and subtly moved to hide behind Zhiyu.

"Why did you sneak onto the cart?" Nanzhi gazed at the two children in the cart, not wanting to lose her temper. She softened her voice and asked.

"I want to be with mama." Yuanbao was hiding behind Zhiyu, showing only a pair of sad eyes.

"But what you did is very dangerous, do you understand? What if something happens?"

The little girl kept her head down, and it was impossible to see her eyes. Only two tiny pigtails were visible.

"Be good, Yuanbao, it’s too dangerous at the foot of the mountain now. Your mother, brother, uncle and the others will come to see you after they return, okay?" Considering that Yuanbao was a little over two years old, Nanzhi couldn’t bring herself to lose her temper.

Since Chi Sheng’s wife ran off with another man, Yuanbao had grown up without her mother by her side. Nanzhi couldn’t quite understand why the little girl had chosen to see her as her mother, but she could empathise with Yuanbao’s longing for a mother, which was why she had agreed to Chi Sheng’s suggestion of becoming Yuanbao’s godmother.

But agreeing to be her godmother didn’t mean Nanzhi could take Yuanbao down the mountain. Given the current state of the world, they could barely take care of themselves. How could they possibly want to look after another child as well?

"Mmm..." The little girl’s voice was muffled and unhappy as she continued to hide nehiZd Zhiyu.

Zhiyu signaled to Nanzhi with his eyes. Nanzhi nodded and let down the curtain to the cart.

"Brother, I want to go with you." Yuanbao grabbed the sleeve of Zhiyu’s clothes, swaying it gently.

"Little sister must be a good girl. There’s not enough food at the foot of the mountain and bad men might kidnap the babies." Zhiyu shifted his position and turned toward Yuanbao.

"What do they want with the babies?" asked the little girl innocently, looking up with a confused expression.

"They steal babies to eat them!" Zhiyu put his little hands on his waist. "They’re really, really bad! They even wanted to steal our chicken eggs! But mama scared them away! "

When Zhiyu said this, his face was filled with pride.

He saw it all!

Mama scared the bad man away with a big ax!

Yuanbao blinked and stretched her little finger toward the corner, pointing to the basket, and asked, "Did they lay the eggs?"

"Yeah, they did!"

Zhiyu nodded, fondly touching Yuabao’s pigtails, "Yuanbao, be a good girl. If you go downstairs with us, you will have nothing to eat. Yuanbao looks good only when she is plump! Moreover, godfather will also miss you when you’re gone."

The little girl pinched the flesh on her face, and then she asked with uncertainty, "really?"

He nodded, "Of course. Girls look good when they are plump. It’s just that mama is too thin. If you walked with us, you would become as thin as mama."

Yuanbao’s eyes widened in horror. Imagining Nanzhi’s thin figure, she quickly shook her head.

"Then, will brother and mama really come back to see me?" The little girl looked at Zhiyu earnestly, making him feel a little embarrassed.

He scratched his head. Zhiyu then said, "We have to go... go to the place where the swallows are. My father is coming to pick us up. But since mama promised to come see you again, we will definitely come back."

"Why didn’t brother’s father come with you?" Yuanbao was a little puzzled. As if remembering something, she leaned close to Zhiyu’s ear and whispered, "Brother Zhiyu, did your father run off with another woman?"

Zhiyu was stunned. Why would his father run away with another woman?

"I heard the old ladies in the village say that... my mother ran off with someone else, so I was raised by father. Brother, since your father didn’t come with you, did he also run away with someone else?"

Nanzhi, who was eavesdropping from outside the cart, was taken aback.

Did Yuanbao know her mother had run off with someone else?
