Chapter 136: [The Corpse Collector] (12)
[This passion for acting...]
[I told you there was something special about Silvanus!!!]
[If Lucian knew that Silvanus had clung to Silas all day yesterday in spirit form, maybe he wouldn’t be wearing that worried scowl right now, ha ha ha.]
[Poor guy, too. Even if he wants to worry, he must pretend to be annoyed first.]
Ryan took Silvanus’ hand and reassured him, "We’ll leave the village soon and get treated. Everything will be fine. Let’s focus on completing the mission first."
He emphasized the word "mission" as if hinting at a different task altogether—not the body-retrieval assignment they were supposedly on.
Ryan and Lucian knew something about his identity in this place. They just seemed uncertain about his current state—whether his memory loss was real or not.
Silvanus lowered his gaze slightly. To be safe, he decided not to reveal anything and nodded.
He stood up—still hesitant but with a new resolve—and said, "We agreed to do this mission together. I know what I need to do now. Thanks, guys."
With that, he took the lead and walked out. Lucian and Ryan exchanged a glance and quickly followed behind.
Outside, Bryan and Ciel were already sitting at the dining table. The food was straightforward—just some vegetables preserved in salt, so much so that they’d turned a strange dark brown. Even without tasting it, Silvanus could already imagine the overwhelming saltiness.
Alongside the vegetables were bowls of porridge—a humble meal the villagers always ate.
When he saw Silvanus and the others come out, Bryan said nothing. He only glanced toward the door to Aboli and Julie’s room, frowning slightly. "Why haven’t Aboli and Julie come out yet..."
Ciel looked up at that, his expression drained of energy. "Julie’s unstable condition is understandable, but Aboli’s not the type to go to bed early and sleep late."
As he spoke, he glanced at Silvanus with bloodshot eyes filled with a strange emotion.
He didn’t like Silvanus, but Silvanus had no idea what he’d done to deserve Ciel’s resentment.
This show didn’t follow conventional logic. At this rate, he might genuinely become the protagonist—the kind that rises through hardship to eventual success.
At that moment, a stream of comments floated in front of Silvanus again.
[Look at Bryan’s acting—shouldn’t he be the one who knows best why Aboli and Julie haven’t come out yet? Ha ha.]
[They’re finally taking action! I’ve been waiting forever for the subsequent plot development!]
Silvanus couldn’t help but frown slightly.
In this kind of dungeon, the viewers seem only to know the identities of certain main characters and a rough sketch of their pasts—but not the actual plot developments in advance like before.
Just go with the flow, then. After all, his job was to rack up acting points from the audience. Silvanus thought to himself.
Ciel had been somehow affected by whatever strange thing he saw yesterday. Usually, even if he were unhappy with Silvanus, he wouldn’t be this blatantly hostile.
"Let’s go check it out," Silvanus suddenly spoke, startling Bryan, who turned to look at him in surprise.
Noticing Bryan’s gaze, Silvanus instinctively shrank back and hesitantly asked, "Did I say something wrong? Shouldn’t we go see how they’re doing?"
Bryan chuckled and shook his head. "No, it’s just... you spoke up so suddenly that I was a bit surprised. I thought maybe you had remembered something..."
Before Bryan could finish, Lucian immediately jumped in, sneering, "Sounds like someone’s feeling guilty. You seem worried Silvanus might regain his memory—don’t tell me you were the one who pushed him?"
Bryan frowned at that, his tone turning cold. "Lucian, don’t go too far. I’m not that kind of person."
No, Bryan was precisely that kind of person. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have gathered all his so-called "friends" to wipe them out.
But as for the memory loss? That was one thing Bryan had been wrongly accused of—because Silvanus had made the whole thing up.
Before things spiraled further out of control, Silvanus quickly interjected, "I still don’t remember anything, but I’ve thought things through. What I need to do now is stay calm and face everything head-on. Yesterday, I was overwhelmed and shocked by everything, so I acted the way I did. I must’ve caused you a lot of trouble, Bryan."
Silvanus bowed his head and offered Bryan a sincere thank you.
Bryan quickly waved it off, smiling. "It’s nothing. We’re all friends—Silvanus, you don’t need to be so formal."
"You are a good team leader, Bryan," Silvanus complimented.
Lucian, standing nearby, curled his lips in annoyance, clearly unimpressed by their friendly exchange.
He gave Silvanus a cold glare and mocked, "You hand out ’good person’ cards to everyone you meet. You’ll die from your stupidity at this rate."
With that, he kicked the door open and walked out without another word, not bothering the others.
Bryan frowned as he watched Lucian leave, then looked back at Silvanus. "Lucian’s being tough, Silvanus, you..."
But before Bryan could finish, Silvanus nodded with a knowing look. "I get it. Lucian’s personality isn’t all that bad—he doesn’t know how to show it."
Bryan pressed his lips together, trying to smile, though it was clear that wasn’t what he meant to say.
But Silvanus no longer cared what Bryan had to say. He wasn’t about to keep acting out these little plays with him.
He knocked firmly over to the door of Aboli and Julie’s room.
What irony—just yesterday, they knocked on Silvanus’ door. Today, it was his turn.
"Aboli, Julie—it’s time for the mission. Let’s go."
Silvanus knocked again and called out, but there was no response. He turned to look at Bryan.
Bryan frowned and stepped up, calling their names, but still received no reply.
Even Ciel, despite whatever he had been feeling, sobered up a little. He muttered under his breath, "Julie didn’t seem too stable yesterday... she wouldn’t do anything stupid, would she..."
Hearing that, even Bryan couldn’t help but frown more deeply.
"Break the door," Silvanus said directly.
Hearing that, Ryan immediately stepped forward. Bryan raised his hand, seemingly to stop him, but it was already too late.
BANG!
Ryan kicked the door open with such force that even Ciel couldn’t help but gape, a hint of apprehension flashing in his eyes.
At that moment, the scene inside the room drew all their attention. Julie was curled up on the floor, startled by the sudden intrusion. She stared at the door in fear, and upon seeing Silvanus and the others, instead of calming down, she screamed even louder. Her body trembled violently as she backed away until she was huddled in the corner.
Even then, she kept struggling, hands raised in front of her face, muttering repeatedly, "No, no, no—don’t come near me! Could you not take me away? Don’t take me away!"
"What’s wrong with her?" Ciel muttered. Though worried, he didn’t dare step forward, afraid that he’d be held responsible if Julie suddenly had some episode.
Silvanus looked around the room and frowned slightly. "Where’s Aboli?"
With Aboli’s personality, she should’ve stormed out already, yelling at Ryan for kicking down the door.
But now, the room was empty—only Julie’s terrified voice echoed.
"Don’t take me away... don’t take me away..." Julie kept repeating.
"She’s saying not to take her away. Did someone go into their room last night?" Ryan asked from the side.
Ciel forced a laugh and shook his head. "That’s impossible, no way that could’ve happened, haha... We didn’t hear a thing, and these rooms don’t even have windows. How could anyone have come in and taken Aboli without us noticing?"
Even as he spoke, Ciel’s trembling hands completely betrayed him.
"Maybe Aboli went out early this morning, that’s all!" Ciel raised his voice as if trying to bolster his confidence and prove himself right.
No one responded.
Bryan quickly approached Julie, asking gently, "Julie, what happened? Calm down, where did Aboli go?"
Julie continued to struggle.
"AAAAAAAH!" she suddenly screamed as Bryan grabbed her hand, shrieking as though someone was slitting her throat. The scream was so loud that Bryan instinctively let go and flinched.
Bryan frowned. "She’s not in a stable state. We won’t get anything out of her—we need to split up and find Aboli first."
Silvanus looked at Bryan, then dropped his gaze to Julie, who was screaming like a madwoman lost in her hallucination of fear.
He frowned slightly, didn’t say anything, and followed the others out.
Because of Julie’s unstable condition and broken door, they moved her into Silvanus’s group’s room for now while the others searched for Aboli.
"Why has everything turned out like this... Where the hell did Aboli go..." Ciel muttered, gnawing on his fingernail so hard that it bled, yet he seemed utterly unaware of the pain.
Silvanus looked at him and asked, "Ciel, what exactly did you see under the water yesterday?"
Ciel flinched slightly at the question. Ever since the diving session the day before, he had become increasingly jumpy and overly sensitive to everything around him.
