Chapter 99: Pain of past

Kyrell knew that he was being manipulated by this merman, but he chose to stay ignorant to learn more about his motive in approaching a powerless prince like him rather than his brother the eagle king. But the words he heard from him left him baffled for quite some time, ’He had a predestined mate?’ that was hard for him to believe. Then the merman said that someone stole his spot beside his mate and he had to admit that it irked him.

All his life, he never cared about giving up something that he liked or wanted because he was used to that. His brother always warned him to not covet his seat and he gladly did that. His tribesmen tried to convince him in taking the throne but he was not interested in that, what he truly wanted was someone to genuinely love and comfort him.

His adoptive father, the late eagle king picked him up as a plaything for his son, but he didn’t mind it so much because he always longed for a family. He tried to become stronger and better for his father to acknowledge him but everything he got from him was a cold gaze and indifference, sometimes even beatings when Derek pushed all of his misdoings on him to put up with. As time passed, he became numb and distanced from his so-called family, but all of that changed on his twelfth birthday. His feathers changed from black to golden color and he was the youngest beastman ever to turn to his human form.

The late eagle king who didn’t show any interest in him came that day and took him somewhere. He vividly remembered going to a place that was filled with witch masters. His father pushed him near the plaza and announced, "I want his powers shifted to my son, you guys have an hour to do that"

Kyrell widened his eyes and his body kept on trembling as the witch masters strode towards him. They closed their eyes and directed some weird light towards him and that caused him excruciating pain all over his body. His young mind didn’t even understand what was going on and his legs refused to move from that place. He wanted to flee, to run away from these people but his legs were shaking because of the horrible pain that light caused.

"Father!" he shouted on top of his lungs, "Please save me...I’ll be good.....I’ll listen to all of your words"

But his father ignored his desperate plea and stood still. After what felt like an eternity, the light finally ended leaving him in a battered state. The witch masters frowned and turned towards his father, "We apologize your majesty, but his powers are too strong and we are unable to remove it, much less transfer"

The eagle king clicked his tongue, "Is there no other way to take his powers for my son?"

They shook their head, "It is impossible your majesty"

"Well then I must continue to keep him as a slave so that he can assist my son in the future"

"That is a great idea your majesty" then they looked at Kyrell on the ground, "Should we manipulate his mind and make him an absolutely loyal servant? He will not be able to defy you or your son after this"

And that made Kyrell’s blood freeze, he wanted to tear off their throat for saying those words. Fortunately, the eagle king just shook his head, "He is already loyal to us, and I don’t think it will be necessary because I will just kill him if he defies me"

"As you wish your majesty" after that, everything went blank, and when he opened his eyes, he was back in his cellar.

The next morning, the eagle king took him out of the cellar and trained him to assist his son as a loyal servant. And he obeyed everything they said because he was horrified of going back to that place full of witch masters who were nothing but monsters.

Growing up, he endured his foster brother or master’s abuse and bullying. He told himself that everything will become fine one day and wished that he could also receive love and affection, but all of that shattered into pieces when he witnessed his father killing his only friend who cared for him. He was devasted beholding Noel’s dead and lifeless body on the cold floor. His ears buzzed and he was not able to see or hear anything other than the sight in front of him, "Why?" that was the only word that he could ask his so-called father. Why did he kill his only solace when he remained loyal to him and his son?

"Because you were getting distracted, that idiot was taking your mind off of your training" and that’s it, his strings snapped that day. He used his power for the first time and attacked the eagle king. He dragged him towards the forest and made sure that he could not scream for help.

Manifesting the golden light in his hands, he looked at the terrified figure of his so-called father, "You always wanted this didn’t you?" his cold voice rang in the forest making the eagle king scatter away from him, "I’m going to give it to you today, make sure to handle it well"

Saying that he started pouring all of his powers inside the eagle king’s body. The eagle king screamed for mercy because of the pain he felt, "I’m...sorry...Kyrell stop this!"

Kyrell smirked and continued to pour his power, "Do you remember how I too screamed for mercy that day? You didn’t even care to hear my pleas, did you? Then tell me why should I forgive you now?"

"I obeyed you and your son endlessly, enduring pain and misery, but you killed my only friend because I was distracted? Bastard, you asked for this" as he poured more of his powers, the king’s body twitched abnormally and came to halt.

Kyrell bent his body and snickered at the lifeless body, "Too easy, why didn’t I do this earlier?" and he knew the answer to this question, it was because he yearned to become this man’s family. He hoped to receive a pat on his head for all his training and hard work, he strived to get recognized for his loyalty, but everything is over now.

He returned to the tribe and slept peacefully that day. The next morning, the eagle king’s body was found in the forest ground. His son, Derek was busier in ascending his throne than investigating his father’s death. Kyrell smiled bitterly and decided to not kill Derek, it was not because of his familial love but he thought that he owed the late eagle king as he brought him back home after his parents’ death. That was the only ounce of gratitude he had for the late eagle king.

As Derek ascended the throne, he mated with the daughter of the fox king and shifted his tribe into the beast city. Coming here, Derek always wanted to test his loyalty. He gave dangerous missions to complete hoping he would die in one of them, but Kyrell returned alive and well, he didn’t want to give that scoundrel the satisfaction with his death. He wanted him to be secretly scared and wary about him, Kyrell wanted him to wither in uncertainty all his life, it was kind of fun to see him so paranoid.

His life from then on was monotonous. Training, completing the mission, and more training, was his life until this manipulative merman told about his mate, well future mate. She was so lovely and to think that he was destined with someone so enthralling, his mind was jumbled in uncertainty which he didn’t feel for years. He was pleased after seeing her image but was doubtful and almost sure that such a gorgeous female would not love someone like him. A miserable orphan was his identity now, and he had to admit that he was scared to receive her rejection.

Then when he heard about someone else taking his place beside her, he felt his anger rising. He failed to inspect the truth because the only thing that spun in his mind was about a fake taking his place beside her. As he was coming up with ways to kill off that fraud, Nathan’s voice incited his attention, "She is snake king’s mate"

Kyrell raised his brows. Was the snake king the person who took his place? But the merman said that it was not him but it was someone named Killian. He was lord of the north, Kyrell had heard about before.

"What should I do to take my place back?" he didn’t care about anything now that he finally had a chance to have someone who could love him. Didn’t this merman say that she was destined for him? Then she would come to love him after the disappearance of that fake. He refused to think otherwise in this matter.
