Chapter 233: Mad man
Chapter 233: Mad man
[FOX TRIBE]
Xavier coldly looked at the scene happening in front of him. It was almost comical watching the so-called elders of his tribe concurrently blame Kyle—his subordinate. And the fun part here was that the same elders just a few months ago had urged him to take Kyle as his aid bragging about his power and loyalty. Aside from this, he also saw the only elder keeping quiet regarding this matter and he is Kyle’s father. The old man looked terrified of his son’s possible cruel future.
"This treacherous runt almost sold our tribe to those bastard strays," said an elder gritting his teeth. Then he earnestly looked at Xavier before adding, "Your Majesty, you should punish him severely for this"
"Yes, your majesty," another elder said agreeing with the previous one as he glared at the kneeling Kyle, "Let this serve as a warning for others in the tribe who might harbor such vile intentions"
As the arguments turned heated, Lexi, standing at one of the corners of the hall, kept clenching and unclenching her fists trying to calm her nerves. By now, her palms were etched with deep nail marks. She nervously glanced at her brother and waited with bated breath for his words regarding the matter. And she received that soon enough because Xavier curtly raised his hand stopping the audience from talking before he parted his lips, "Did you do it, Kyle?’’ these were his only words, and those too were directed at his aid.
Meanwhile, the elders got offended as their king totally ignored them as though he didn’t care about their opinions. And that was exactly what was going on in Xavier’s head. He did not give a dime about what those elders were babbling. Right now he was giving Kyle his chance to explain himself which no one was giving until now. Kyle was the one involved in this matter and he should be the one to talk instead of those old men.
It did not take long for Kyle to answer his king’s question, "I did not, your majesty. I would never betray you" His words were clear and filled with conviction which was heard by everyone present in the hall.
Xavier observed Kyle’s kneeling figure on the ground. The latter was badly beaten in the name of investigation. Old and new wounds adorned his face that it was almost difficult to recognize him. But what caught, Xavier’s eyes was the fire inside Kyle’s eyes. They were not dim and hazy but were burning brightly as he looked straight at Xavier.
At this moment, Xavier understood that all of it was the truth. Every word uttered by Kyle was nothing but the truth but only this was not enough to prove his innocence. So he addressed the next most important thing, "Do you have any evidence against my aid?’
The elders and tribe guards understood that this question was directed at them. The King was reminding them of Kyle’s position and was also warning them to back out now if they didn’t have solid proof. Some of the elders grew hesitant at this point and meekly stepped back, whereas the arrogant ones proudly looked at Xavier as they said, "Offcourse we have proof, your majesty" Then they signaled to a guard, and that followed the entrance of a scrawny looking beastman inside the throne room.
"And who might you be?’’ came a sarcastic question from Xavier.
"The proof, your majesty"
’’Proof?’’ Xavier chuckled and then glanced at the trembling beastman, "And what exactly are you trying to prove by bringing this beastman here?’’
One of the elders answered that query, "This beastman here was close to, Kyle, your majesty. He was the one who informed us of Kyle’s betrayal"
"Is that so....?" Xavier mused to himself and glanced at Kyle. As expected, Kyle’s face was filled with anguish and disbelief. The latter was looking at the supposed proof with anger-filled eyes. But Xavier was able to make out another emotion swirling beneath them. It was the look one wears when they get betrayed by the person that one trusted the most.
However, the irony here was that Kyle was betrayed not only by someone he trusted but also by someone he loved.....romantically. Xavier already knew of his aid’s preference for beastmen instead of females. Something like this was odd in the beast world but well, it had nothing to do with him, so he turned a blind eye to their relationship.
Now, Xavier’s eyes fell on Kyle’s lover.....his name, Josh. The latter looked petrified standing there and kept on glancing at the kneeling Kyle.
"Did Kyle really help those stray beasts in attacking our tribe?" the king’s voice rang across the audience hall rendering everyone silent. And the one that received his question shuddered in his place and had a hard time opening his mouth.
"Your answer now will determine Kyle’s future" Xavier pressed, "If proven guilty, I’ll personally rip his throat out"
Josh looked appalled as soon as those words left the king’s mouth. He cast a quick glance at Kyle and clenched his fists. The person he loved was drenched in blood making it hard for him to look. He never wished for something like this to happen. This was not what he was promised when he decided to work against his lover.
According to them, Kyle was supposed to leave the fox tribe together with him the next dawn. But the king was saying something else altogether. He couldn’t accept this.....he’d rather die than let any harm fall on the one he loved.
Josh contemplated in his place for some time before he looked in a certain direction before he extended his clawed hand to his neck.
"Josh...no!" Kyle’s eyes went wide when he saw what Josh was going to do. He struggled in his place amid the pain caused by his wounds but it was too late.
’Slit’ Josh pierced his neck while simultaneously looking at Xavier, "I-I.....was...th-the one who betrayed you, You-your majesty. Kyle.....ha-has nothing.....to" That was it. No more words came out of Josh’s mouth before he crumbled to the ground while taking his last breath.
"NO!" Kyle crawled toward his lover’s body and pulled him onto his lap, "No no, please no" he kept on pleading for no one in particular. His mind refused to believe the reality in front of him. His Josh left him.
Kyle kept on crying and looked at Xavier, "Your majesty, please do something. Please save him.....I beg you, your majesty"
Xavier looked equally shocked by the turn of events. He suddenly felt guilty. It felt like he had pushed Josh to his death. He just wanted to get the truth out of Josh but this happened. But the only good thing here was that Kyle got his name cleared. Even then, he felt his heart heavy for some reason. Not knowing what to do, he raised himself from the throne before walking out of the room.
The elders too looked perplexed and soon left the room.
While all of this was happening, Michael got out of his hiding before he pulled his mate out of the room. Lexi looked pale and weak. No matter how much she tried, she could not get the image of that beastman killing himself out of her mind.
"What have we done, Michael?" she desperately asked him as he carried her to her room.
"It’s not your fault, flower" Unlike her Michael looked calm and composed. He put her on the bed before kneeling by her side, "His death was inevitable. Either one of them had to die to keep you safe. He deserved it"
"He deserved it?" Lexi asked with a frown, "What does that even mean!? That poor beastman.....he slit his own throat due to us! And here you are..."
"Sush.....flower" Michael cooed at her as he settled his head on her lap, "There is nothing more important to me in this world other than you...I will not hesitate to kill even myself if that is what takes to keep you safe" then he looked up at Lexi’s eyes, "I love you, my flower"
"Michael?" she called and he nodded telling her to continue, "What will you do if I die?"
Michael frowned, "That will never happen"
"Everybody has to die someday" Lexi was persistent with the questions, "I’m just asking. Tell me.....what will you do if something happens to me?"
Michael didn’t want to answer, but with her urging, he had to, "I will get the sapphire of wish and bring you back to life"
"I don’t want that" she whispered, "I...want to be in peace once I die"
Michael glared at her, "That is not happening. Peace...rest.....I don’t care about things like that. You have to be with me forever....and ever"
Lexi felt her breath hitch. She didn’t dare open her mouth. How could she when he looked like this? Until now, she had ignored her nagging feeling about Michael’s changed behavior but she can not do that anymore.
Her Michael is not normal....but is a stray beast. This fact will never change. He seemed like someone who had lost all the feelings, pain, and empathy for everyone except for her. And the feelings that were directed at her were not pure....Lexi could sense it. It was something dark. He gazed at her as though there was no one in this world aside from her.
Lexi was not sure if she could handle this. She felt scared. Yet, she had to put her side of effort in order to survive. Leaning down, she kissed his lips which gradually lightened his mood. There was only one thing that was running through her mind. She has to get away from this madman. Or she would not be peaceful even in her death.
