Chapter 86: So It Begins
So It Begins
Slowly, students and teachers started to funnel in, and by the time it was 9, pretty much everyone had arrived and had gathered outside the hall.
To his dismay, Osho had pretty much become a bit of a celebrity throughout the school. Even though his exploits at the battle against the Harbinger hadn’t been shared, everyone had put two and two together. They’d all seen how Gake managed to suppress the creature the first time. So even if they didn’t know Gale dealt the lethal blow that downed the creature, they were certain he had been at the scene and played some role.
Things like ’Fighting an Elite rank before becoming one’ and ’He is already enriching his resume’ were flying about constantly, and it took him a good chunk of his brain power to not just find a corner and sit until the exam started.
"Seems like someone is a celebrity," Ellie said with an impish smile as Osho stood stiffly, trying to ignore the constant whispers.
"Mhm. But it’s only natural. He kinda saved our lives, and he had a role to play in the so-called final battle, even if we don’t know what that role was." Kurt remarked as he let Clyde nibble on his fingers.
The group chatted a bit more before the murmurs started to quieten.
Osho immediately felt a shift in the air and turned his head to see...
’The Principal.’ He recognized.
Timothy Bright, the man who created this school as was also its principal at the same time.
While he had no control over the level of beasts his students hatched, few could say he was bad at his job. Despite being one of the 12 Expert-ranked Beast Tamers, he was quite hospitable, and he often passed through the classes to see what was going on or personally helped students in their affairs.
Osho recalled a statement someone made a while back.
’We’re so used to him that it’s kinda hard to see him as an imposing principal as opposed to a father.’ A sentiment Osho couldn’t help but agree with.
Point is, the man’s a good person, and everyone acknowledged that fact. Hence, the reason they all went quiet was due to pure respect, not an ounce of fear present.
By his side was Mrs Jane was one of the Vice-Principals whom Osho really should have remembered his name by now, and a few other teachers.
He noticed a few of them had scars that weren’t there before, and he immediately thought back to the beast tide. Ellie told him about how they were forced to join the fight due to a lack of military personnel, something that left a bitter taste in his mouth.
They passed by the students and went to a conveniently placed podium, and the principal stepped onto it and looked around before saying with a warm smile, his voice as easy as always.
"Good morning all of you. It’s good to see that everyone is accounted for." He started.
"I must say, you all are very brave. I didn’t have a chance to do so before, but I commend all of you for your efforts, and I will be the first to say it, but your efforts during the beast tide are recognized. All of you were amazing." He spoke with genuine pride and the reactions of the students were various, but it all boiled down to joy from the praise.
"Not to mention, I want to formally apologize for the danger all of you faced during the excursion. I can easily say that I had no idea such a thing would happen and avoid taking responsibility, but the fact is, you all were in danger due to my decisions, and for that, I apologize." Everyone was stunned when they saw the order man bow, and there was a wave of exclamations from the students telling him to raise his head and that it wasn’t his fault.
’Integrity.’ That was the one thought that flashed through Osho’s mind at that moment.
After a few seconds, the principal straightened and exhaled.
"You may think that too much, but no one is above admitting their mistakes and taking responsibility. Not me, and not you. Now." He spared a glance at the hall before continuing.
"You lot have had a taste of how perilous the wilderness is, and witnessed the horrors mankind has to face on a daily basis. Each and every one of you is an important piece of a grand puzzle, and now, you’re about to take a significant step in your journey." He gestured towards the hall.
"I don’t think I can stress just how important it is for you to do well in the upcoming exams. I’m not exaggerating when I say getting into a good college will do you wonders. However, whether or not you get into a good college depends on you." His words were serious, but his smile was easy.
"However, I trust my students. Even if the practical exam doesn’t favor a lot of you, I have faith in your ability concerning the written exam. So don’t feel anxious, write what you know, follow instructions, but if you notice something wrong, point it out. The ones who set the questions are rarely perfect, and sometimes, a mistake on their part could make or break some people, so be observant."
The man continued his speech and everyone listened intently. Osho was keenly aware of the man making use of Mana to make his words more appealing to hear, but he didn’t find anything wrong with it.
Soon, he finished his speech, and as soon as it was 8:30, the teachers got a list and started calling in the students in alphabetical order.
Osho sent back a silent prayer towards whoever had A for their first name and surname, and gradually, everyone was filtered in. There was no case of anyone not hearing their name or ignoring it because the teachers could amplify their voices using Mana, and said Mana locked onto the called person so even if they somehow didn’t hear or ignore it, they could still be found.
Well, that was the plan in case someone tried to ignore it. Surprisingly, everyone was pretty obedient.
Eventually, Osho got called in and he walked into the wonderfully air-conditioned hall.
There were no instructions about beasts besides that they couldn’t make noise/disturb and they couldn’t hide any cheats with them.
As for whether the beast was smart and helped the students with their answers? Well, that was actually welcome. In fact, it was deemed good if that was possible.
A lot of emphasis was placed on Beast Tamers and their Beasts having a strong bond, so if the two of them could work on a question together, such a thing was more than welcome. Basically, they liked to see the Beast and Tamer as one person.
’Simulated environment?’ Gale wondered through their bond as he seemed to revel in the comforting coolness that filled the hall.
Osho chuckled.
’Not exactly. The air is just cooled down a bit to make it more comfortable for the people who are writing the exam.’ Osho replied as he made his way to the seat he’d be using.
The hall was quite expansive, and as of right now, rows of seats and desks had been arranged within it. Each desk had the name of the person who would be using it pasted on its surface, based on the same alphabetical order. The general color of the place was also gray and beige as those colors help reduce stress, and Osho could vaguely feel Mana, probably from hiding magic circles, moving through the room, and when it interacted with him, he felt his mind ease slightly.
Each desk also already had a tablet on it with a digital pen (because paper is for plebians). The tablets were locked, though, and would only be usable when the exam began.
Needless to say, the place was very conducive for writing exams.
’Hm, but isn’t that still a simulated environment?’ Gale asked and Osho grinned as he took his seat.
’That was a flawless sentence. Good job.’ He said with genuine pride as he ruined the bird’s feathers, causing him to coo gently.
’As for your question. I suppose you could still be considered a simulated environment. But instead of making it difficult for the people inside as a form of training, it just makes them more comfortable.’
’Oooh.’ Gale’s beam opened to make an ’o’. Then he tilted his head.
’Why don’t you have one?’
Osho: (T▽T)
He forced a cough.
’It’s...not cheap.’ He said with a bit of dejection and Gale just nodded.
He spotted something out of the corner of his eyes and looked up to see Ellie waving at him, her seat a few rows over.
He smiled and returned the wave.
The Beast and his Tamer continued the mental conversation, with Osho mostly correcting Gale on his vocabulary and whatnot.
Then, the Supervisor walked in.
