Beast-Tamer: Limitless Evolution
Chapter 76: Morning

Chapter 76: Morning

Morning

"So it was a failure in the end." In the cave, the elven man and the entity that was fully covered were conversing. The one that was fully covered held a device, and on it, a large NO SIGNAL could be seen.

"Hm, I wouldn’t say it was a loss." The elven man said, his voice still carrying that amused tone.

"... Care to elaborate? Your ’Citadel destroying creation’ was destroyed and failed to accomplish its purpose. Seems like a failure to me." The Other man countered and the elf snorted.

"First of all. That was a prototype. Nowhere near as good as my truly completed babies. Second, the only reason it ’failed’ was due to that unforeseen factor. You know as well as I do, something that could bypass the bloodline suppression protection wasn’t something I could have anticipated." He countered and the suited man scoffed in return.

"Well, you’re the expert in this stuff. So you should have considered it as a possibility."

"That’s what the protection was for!" The elf shouted before taking a breath.

"Anyway, other than that, you have to admit, for a prototype, the effectiveness was impressive, and there’s no way other Citadels will have such an anomalous character in place to prevent my babies from doing what they were made to do." He said slowly and the suited man was silent for a moment before nodding slightly.

"I suppose in the end, its performance was satisfactory. Still, for the amount of boasting you did, the fact that it failed to do specifically what it was created for isn’t a good look on you and you know it. Nevertheless, as you said, it was only due to the anomaly that it failed." The man tilted his head.

"On that note. Shouldn’t we eliminate such a character from the picture? They could be an issue." He asked, but the elf shook his head.

"It does seem that way huh? Well, as primitive as these people are, there’s no way they didn’t notice that my creation was, well, a creation. So they will be on guard. It won’t be wise for us to reveal ourselves. At least, not at this stage." The Elf answered.

"That’s dumb. Aren’t you the one who keeps talking about not leaving any loose ends in case of the future?" For once, the elf wasn’t offended and nodded thoughtfully.

"You’re right, but I’m thinking of a way for us to do it without arousing any suspicion." The two of them were silent for a moment when the elf suddenly snapped his fingers.

"Right, weren’t they meant to hold some sort of entrance examination? That should be a great time to do it." Hearing this the suited man tilted his head.

"Hm, you mean that event? But isn’t that an even worse time to do it? These people value their younger generation, as do all races. There’s no way they’d just let something bad happen during such an important event." The suited man argued, but the elf smiled at him.

"That’s exactly what I’m counting on. Haven’t you heard the saying? Going right under one’s nose? They will be confident that no one would dare try to cause a disturbance at such an important event, which in itself is an opening we can exploit." The elf rubbed his hands together.

"Naturally, we’ll still need to be subtle. But luckily, one of my babies is good at just that. Sadly, she’s a bit weaker than most of her siblings, but she can get the job done." Hearing this, the suited man fell silent for a while before shrugging.

"If you say so. Just don’t mess it up this time." He said almost flippantly and the elf grinned.

"It should be fine. Besides, even if we don’t get the one we are aiming for, we can still cause some okay damage no?" The man in the suit just shook his head.

"Do whatever you want."

’... Ugh.’ Osho groaned inwardly as he tried to open his eyes but failed miserably.

He was vaguely aware of his body, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t move an inch.

Was he dead? He didn’t think so. He hurt like hell, so he doubted it. But then why was he so sluggish? It wasn’t just his body but his mind as well. His thoughts felt muffled, as though they were in quicksand.

He couldn’t understand why, and trying to think about it drained whatever energy he’d managed to regain, so without much hesitation, he went back to sleep.

___

"Is this normal? He shouldn’t still be unconscious... right?"

"Honestly, no. I have a few theories as to why he hasn’t woken up yet, but they are just theories in the end. He doesn’t seem to be in any danger, though."

"That’s not enough. He needs to wake up eventually."

"I understand your apprehension, but this isn’t something we can rush. Whatever is happening to him is clearly taking its time. Forcing the matter could lead to some unforeseen consequences."

Osho heard a few voices and tried to open his eyes before failing miserably once again. His body still felt sluggish, but his mind was a bit more aware than before.

What was happening? Why couldn’t he still move?

He tried to open his mouth, shift his body, anything, but he was as stiff as a log. Slightly miffed, he tried to sense his bond with Gale. It was still there, but from what he could sense, the bird wasn’t in a much better condition than him. Why was this?

’Is it backlash gotten from dealing such a grievous wound to the Harbinger? But my Mana pool seems full. What’s the cause of this?’ He thought with frustration as he tried to move his Mana. Another bust. Is this was people who were in a coma felt like?

As he struggled, he began to recognize the voices around him.

’Mrs Jane, Alex, Major Thompson, another old voice... Ellie? What is she doing here?’ Osho was momentarily confused. He assumed he was in the military hospital, so Ellie being here threw him off momentarily. But in the end, he decided to just chalk it off to her using her connections to get in. Rich people stuff.

That’s when he was hit by another wave of exhaustion.

’Son of a...’ His thoughts trailed off as he lost consciousness again.

___

"You’re such a weird guy, Osho." Osho’s thoughts slowly became clear as he awakened once more, this time to only a single voice.

’Ellie?’ He tried to move, but failed. However, he could feel his body this time, and his mind felt clearer than ever. Not perfect, but he didn’t feel like he’d pass out in the next few minutes.

"You always seem so aloof, so indifferent. You act like you don’t care about a lot of things, and the way you talk solidifies this fact even more." Ellie continued speaking, her voice sounded wistful and a bit sad.

Osho gave up on moving his limbs and focused all his attention on opening his eyes.

"It’s weird. You’re like a walking contradiction. You give off this unapproachable air at first glance and you seem hesitant to open up to people, but the moment you do, you practically wear your heart on your sleeve. It’s kind of adorable, really." She giggled softly, possibly at a fond memory.

Osho tried harder.

"Then there’s your cooking. Ah, it’s simply immaculate. I’m gonna have to learn a few tricks from you one of these days. I wasn’t joking when I said the food from my cooks at home pales in comparison to whatever you make. I wonder what would happen if you had very good ingredients. Even if in some universe you failed to become a powerful Beast Tamer, you’d certainly be a renowned chef." Osho felt something fall on his forehead and stroked it slightly. Her hand.

"You’d make a good husband, you know." She spoke again, but this time, her voice was trembling slightly.

"Wouldn’t that be nice? Coming home from wherever I went to see you in an apron. That’d be quite the sight, wouldn’t it? Not that I see you being a househusband, but the idea does seem appealing, don’t you think...?" She sniffled before chuckling.

"That’s all for the future, though. More than that, I want to know more about you." Her hand moved to his cheek and caressed it gently.

"There’s a lot you’re holding back, I know there is. But I won’t force you to tell me anything. I want to earn that trust first. I want to be your comfort zone. The one you can confide in if anything is troubling you, or if something weighs heavily on your heart. I know it may not be as soon as you wake up, next week, or next year. But I’ll do my best to be that person for you. I know what it’s like to be trapped in your own thoughts, but I’m sure it’s even worse for you, adhd and all. Then again, you’d still deny you’re a neurodivergent." She chuckled faintly and Osho suddenly felt that she was closer. Much closer.

"But until then, please come back to me." Then he felt softness against his lips, and at the same time, something warm and wet fell on his cheeks.

He’s struggled before, but he never thought it’d take him all his damn willpower to open his eyes.

Ellie pulled back and wiped her eyes with a sniffle and chuckled.

"I’ve always wanted to do that." She whispered and looked down on Osho’s unconscious form. He looked so peaceful with his features relaxed like this.

"I’ll wait. As long as you need." She said faintly and started to get up.

"... Show me... the proof... of me being a neurodivergent." Her body froze as she looked down, and her eyes lit up with shock, disbelief, and glee.

Osho’s eyes had opened, and he was staring right at her.

Her heart swelled with emotions, and she didn’t even know when her tears began falling again. Words filled her mouth before dying on her tongue, and after a silence that stretched for who knows how long, she said in an almost meek, yet received voice.

"... Morning."
