VALENCIA’S POV

I was attacked suddenly.

I swear.

One moment I was sleeping carelessly after having such a long night and fighting all those demons with the assurance that if someone came to hurt me my little bird Happy would handle it, and the next moment I was being scooped in someone’s arms.

I wanted to slap him. There was no lie to it.

Even if he was this dangerous alpha, he can’t just enter a girl’s room and kiss her like this. It shouldn’t be allowed. However, seeing Happy already taking revenge on my behalf by biting his hand, I couldn’t help but snicker inwardly.

Alpha Maverick looked at me, seeking answers of what happened, but I wasn’t answerable to him.

"Get out," I said to him, feeling annoyed that he would interrupt my beauty sleep.

He didn’t get angry like I had thought. Rather, he looked at me with a smirk.

"It looks like the council didn’t teach you any manners. You don’t know any way to show gratitude," he said before he took a step forward, and Happy was about to attack him again when Maverick literally grabbed the ancient bird’s leg and pulled him right in front of his eyes.

Usually, I would’ve felt angry at what he was saying. I mean, how dare he talk to my precious pet like that, but the way his cold eyes swept between the bird and me, I was left with clenching my legs, feeling like I needed to save myself first.

Without thinking twice, I turned around, ready to dash out of the room. However, I could only take a step when I heard the sound of my bird flying away.

I closed my eyes, trying to calm my raging heart, which was forbidding to calm with the alpha hovering over us, his hazel eyes glowing as he was looking at us with emotions that no one has ever used for us.

Usually I have only heard of alphas begging me to leave their people and pack alone. This was the first time an alpha was asking me to stay back.

It would be better if I leave here without any hard feelings as soon as possible.

I was about to tell him to move away when what he said next froze me in his place.
