Chapter 42: Caress her

Chapter 42: Caress her

ALPHA MAVERICK’S POV

"What the hell are you doing? Quickly take everyone out and send them away from the building until everything is sorted. Ask everyone on the upper floors to vacate the building too," I ordered my men, who always stay on standby outside the University just in case of any attack, and rushed inside as soon as they heard my orders from the mind link.

I ushered all the girls and boys who were working in the laboratory with us before turning around to see if anyone was left.

The fire was only increasing with each passing second.

There was no way it was just an accident. Someone planned this.

I walked out of the laboratory.

"Alpha!" Shadow rushed to me, immediately apologizing when he realized his mistake.

"Sir, your shirt-" Shadow pointed, and I patted my sleeve that was burning.

"It’s nothing. Is everyone out already?" I looked at all the students, who were looking at the building with panic and fear.

"I think everyone is here," Shadow said, and I hummed.

"Did you find anyone? Any suspicious activity? We will check the CCTV footage -"

"Valencia?! Valencia! Where is she?!" I heard a girl’s anxious voice.

I turned toward the crowd, my gaze scanning the people

Valencia. She wasn’t here. What if she -

But she was a supernatural being. She would’ve been able to protect herself just well.

’I don’t sense her here, Maverick. She never came out,’ Reaper stood from his place, worried, and I looked at the first floor.

"Wait for me," I said to Shadow before rushing back into the building and going straight towards the first floor.

"Valencia!" I shouted, trying to look for her through the windows as the smoke made it hard to look inside.

I was about to turn around and walk to the other side when I finally saw her.

There she was, crouching in the corner with her hands placed on her ears and tears streaming down her face.

She was scared. I could see that. I could feel that in my bones and something about that vulnerable position of hers made my heart clench painfully.

"Valencia!" I shouted and without wasting a single second, I kicked the window, the glass shattering, the pieces flying around before I jumped inside and rushed to her.

I saw how she tried to stand up and move from her place, but the almirah fell near her leg and she swayed in her position, my gaze landing on her burnt leg as she whimpered.

Quickly holding her in my arms before she could fall on the burning ground, I looked at her.

Though her eyes were closed, I knew she was battling some kind of demons within herself, like a past trauma, and the thought alone made me want to kill the person who hurt her like this.

"Keep your eyes open, Kitten. Nothing will happen to you," I whispered to her before picking her in my arms and pressing her close to my chest before running out.

"Sir!"

"Valencia!"

I heard collective whispers, but none of that mattered. This girl in my hands needed urgent medical supervision.

Without waiting for my subordinates, I rushed to the car where Theo was about to exit.

"Get back inside and take us to the pack doctor immediately," I commanded and Theo quickly looked at me before nodding.

I sat in the backseat with Valencia whimpering in my arms.

She was unconscious. But for her to whimper even when she was unconscious, just what was she thinking about?

"Don’t do it, dad. Please don’t abandon me. I... I will work hard, Dad. Don’t kill me, please," She whimpered in my arms as her fists clenched around my shirt, making me square my jaws and pull my shirt out of her grip.

Don’t get me wrong. I felt pity for her, but I didn’t want to attach myself to her either. She was dangerous, even if not physically, she was dangerous for me emotionally.

Only I know what kind of turmoil she and her cat have brewed in my heart and mind ever since we met and there is no way I am going to allow her to get herself more attached to me.

"Don’t hurt me, please," She whimpered again, tears streaming from the corner of her eyes.

’Do it, Maverick. You want to do it too. She needs this,’ Reaper encouraged me as I looked at the girl.

’Do you even know what you are telling me to do? She is not our friend, Reaper. I indeed feel attracted to her for some unknown reason, but she can be our worst enemy for all we know. I can’t afford this when we are battling with the rogues and am this close to finding the culprit that turned my life upside down,’ I retorted back with a heavy heart as she brought her face close to our chest, making me inhale a shaky breath.

Usually, it only takes us 25 minutes to reach the pack doctor who practices out of the pack in a big city hospital. Why was taking it so long today?

’She might be our enemy, but she is someone in need. Do it for humanity. Are you sure even if she is our enemy, it’s because she is at fault? Look at her Maverick. Does she look like she is in any position to harm anyone? Besides, who other than you will know what you did? That you let your heart soften for a few seconds? Theo won’t snitch on us for sure,’ Reaper asked.

I gritted my teeth as I saw her scrunching her brows, my gaze landing on her palms that were starting to bleed because she dug her nails into her skin.

’Just for this once, Reaper. I trust your words,’ I said before gulping, and with a trembling hand, I finally placed it on her head and caressed her hair, opening her fists forcefully, and placing her flat palm on my chest, so she would feel my heartbeat and calm down.

I noticed how her blood smeared my skin, making me realize how both the owner and cat ended up leaving a stain on my body directly or indirectly.

Seeing Theo looking at me briefly, I was about to tell him to not let anyone know about this when he said,

"She is in too much pain, sir. Maybe rubbing her back would help," he whispered before he quickly looked away and I did as he suggested.

"Faster, Theo. I need to go back and check what caused this accident too," I whispered before looking out of the window as I cradled the girl, who looked like she was starting to calm down now.

After what felt like an eternity but was only a few minutes, we reached the hospital where our pack doctors practiced, and I took her straight to the emergency room, demanding Doctor Samantha’s presence.

The lady rushed inside the emergency room and looked at the girl in my arms, who wasn’t ready to let go of my shirt anymore before looking at me hesitantly.

"You need to put her down, sir," She said, and I nodded.

I forcefully removed Valencia’s hand from my shirt, making her tear my shirt a little as a few buttons fell on the ground.

"Shift her to a ward as soon as you are done with a check-up. We need to interrogate her later. Also, ask someone to guard her door, just in case. I need to leave," I said and Samantha nodded.

I looked at Valencia one last time before leaving.
