Beast Alpha and His Cursed Luna
Chapter 33: Risky mission

Chapter 33: Risky mission

VALENCIA’S POV

"You have got to be kidding me," I said as soon as my nerves calmed down and Dylan looked at me with his lips pressed into thin lines.

I know what they must be thinking. Any spy that is working for the council would risk his life to get a mission that involves any help to the royals.

The badges you get on your official uniforms for accomplishing that achievement are next level and immediately raise your position. Everyone looks at you with respect, and if you do tremendously great then you are even honored at the half-yearly balls and council parties by the king itself.

And I swear I would’ve been happy too if they had mentioned anything about it before I was warned by a certain alpha, but I wasn’t so interested anymore.

My life was more precious to me than a royal mission which I might earn later too.

I stood from my place and walked to the lawn doors before drawing in the curtains.

"Can you at least hear the entire thing before judging? You won’t have to go anywhere for it. This is a classified mission," Dylan said before he explained to me what needed to be done.

Shocked. That was exactly what I was feeling, no lies.

I blinked at Dylan before looking at Carl. Their serious expressions were telling me that they weren’t pulling my leg, but why was it so hard for me to believe?

Moreover, I never knew Alpha Maverick had that kind of influence in this nation either.

However, there was something else that confused me.

"How did you get the council members to agree to this? This is a classified mission that needs the seating and discussion of at least 10 main council members. Apart from Uncle and Marcus, and you two, no one knows about me. Especially the fact that I am living here and studying at a human University," I looked at Dylan.

He looked at Carl, the hesitancy in his eyes again once again catching me off guard.

There was surely something brewing in the council chambers that they were hiding from me.

"We lied," Carl said.

Well, I figured that much. But what exactly did they lie to me about?

"What part?" I looked at both of them for answers.

"We lied to the council members and said the person studying here is actually working on the royal mission. The mission was passed to us around one month ago but all the spies were busy collecting some kind of information or other. We had already told the royals that we would do it only when the spies would be free," Dylan said.

I looked at him, dumbfounded.

I was starting to understand what he was trying to say and where this was going. However, I still wanted to hear it from him.

"Go ahead,"

"Well, when this thing with the council was raised and reported your stay here, we lied that you were handling the royal mission. It was okay for a couple of days, but then we received a message from the royals that they needed information on progress.

Neither I nor Dad were in the chambers at that time and one of the council members said the spy was already here and they would receive the information soon,"

Dylan explained all the mess that was created in the council chambers and I sat there.

They waited for some kind of reaction from me. I could feel it. But honestly what kind of reaction was I supposed to give?

The royal missions don’t only come with praise and benefits but relative danger and death risks too.

"At least say something, Valencia," Dylan said, his eyes a bit concerned, and I sighed.

"What am I supposed to say, Dylan? No. Let me rephrase it. What exactly do you expect me to say?" I asked as I looked at both of them.

They weren’t here to make my life easy and meet me. They were here to drop the bomb on me.

"The alpha meets and business proposal, everything is a lie. Carl is actually here to aid my mission on purpose, right?" I asked Dylan and he cleared his throat.

He opened his mouth to say something but one looked into my eyes and he looked down at his feet again.

One of the main council member’s sons was here to aid me.

When I should be happy about it, I was actually more wary.

Why?

Because it just promised how bad this was going to be.

"Since you said Carl will stay here for a month, I can see I have limited time too. How long exactly?" I asked.

Cat immediately stood from his place.

"Don’t worry about that, Valencia. We will be able to do that. I have faith in ourselves," He clapped his hands and I rolled my eyes at him.

He wanted to appear confident, but even a nob could see the hesitancy and wavering unsurety in his eyes.

"Three weeks?" I went straight to the point.

"Two weeks," Dylan said, and I smiled.

This was great. Just fucking amazing!

In this meantime, not only was I supposed to prepare for my exams if I wanted to continue studying here, save my ass from a particular Alpha who was investigating my case, but also act as an S-level spy to complete the royal mission.

Wasn’t my life just great?

"Valencia, don’t take so much pressure. This is temporary. We will try to find some solution for it. However, we will need at least some information. So any little information would be helpful," Dylan said and I shook my head.

This was too much for me to take. I needed to leave the house and go for a walk to clear my head.

"I need some time," I said to them before walking out of my lake house.

’You have been awfully silent since earlier,’ I said to Aurora, remembering my harsh words from earlier.

’Are you going to abandon me too now? And here I thought you said you would be with me always. I guess, I am bound to stay alone and bear with everything alone because I am born cursed like -’

’Stop this melodrama of self-deprecating thoughts. You very well know I don’t like it,’ Aurora said, and I smiled when she finally talked to me.

Well, this was a trick that always worked.

’I am sorry about earlier. It’s just... I don’t know. Whenever the topic of my parents is brought up, I lose it,’ I said, and Aurora sighed.

’I don’t exactly blame you. However, I just want to remind you of the same thing that I always do. You will get your answers sooner or later but at the right time. There is a reason you are like this,’ Aurora said and I hummed as we walked forward.

I wasn’t even looking where I was going anymore.

My head was in a complete mess. Dylan only explained to me the missing briefly, but I was already able to smell the danger.

’What thoughts do you have about this mission, Aurora?’ I asked my fake-wolf.

’Well, what can I say? It’s ri-’ She started but stopped mid-sentence, making me pause.

This pause of hers hinted at one thing only.

There was someone around us.

’Valencia, don’t panic. But I smell rogues around us. A lot of them. And with them, I smell the gunpowder,’ Aurora said, and as soon as she ended the sentence, I heard a loud shot echo in the silent forest, making my heart almost leap out of my mouth.

I looked around myself and noticed a change in the smell that I hadn’t noticed earlier.

I was in no man’s land!!

’Valencia! Run!’ Aurora shouted, and I didn’t need to be told twice to do exactly what she was telling me.

No matter how many times she messed with me when it came to rogues, she would never risk our lives like that.

I ran the fastest I could.

Changing into one of the fastest animals was an option because it was already night, but if things went wrong and I got caught by anyone who shouldn’t see me, I would be killed on the spot, or worse imprisoned.

Yes. For people like me, getting imprisoned was worse than dying.

’Guide me through the directions,’ I said to Aurora who started telling me in which direction to go because I couldn’t turn on the flash of my phone either as it would practically tell everyone where I was.

"Quickly! The running sound is coming from this direction!" I heard the unfamiliar voice, and my heart thumped even louder.

Right. There was no way they could smell me. They were running behind me because of the footsteps.

It wasn’t like I could run without making a noise either.

"Hey! You! Stop right there!" I heard and as I tried to look behind me while running, I stumbled on the rock and fell forward, scratching my knees and hands in the process.

I was about to stand and run again when I heard his voice.

"Stop right there or I will shoot you," The rogue said again.
