Chapter 271: Mother’s Dream

VALENCIA’S POV

I opened my eyes slowly, the morning light making me blink a couple of times to get adjusted.

Though the blinds were drawn in, some of the sunlight was still coming inside through the gaps, falling directly on my face.

I wiped the tears from the corner of my eyes, the sadness of what I saw still gripping my heart and making me yearn again.

"Are you awake, my love?" I heard Maverick’s voice and turned my gaze to look at him.

He stood before me with a tray of food in his hands, a soft smile lingering on his lips while his eyes beamed with happiness at something hard to decipher.

"Hmm," I hummed, my hands clutching the blanket around my chest when I felt my bare legs and realized I was naked under the blanket.

As if Maverick understood my hesitation, he sighed, walked to me, and placed the tray on the nightstand before kissing my forehead.

"Here," He offered me a shirt from the couch.

It was his shirt, and I nodded.

He turned around to give me privacy to get dressed into the shirt, and even though it was ironic how I needed this even when we were sleeping naked together, and there wasn’t any inch of my body that he hadn’t seen.

Even though it brought a blush to my cheeks.

"Done," I whispered, and he turned around and looked at me with a sigh.

"You didn’t have a nightmare today," he stated more than asked.

I nodded at him.

It was true. Strangely.

After what happened yesterday, I didn’t think I would be able to sleep at all. That trauma, which was really hard to get past but was only possible because I wanted to and Maverick was with me, was indeed frightening.

But strangely, even in my subconscious mind, I did not think about that scenario or the dream that haunts me.

Instead, the dream that appeared was...

"Are you okay?" Maverick sat before me and cupped my cheeks.

I nodded at him before we had our breakfast.

"I’ll ask Shadow to arrange for the necessary things before we go to the council chambers since we need to report there," Maverick said.

I nodded in understanding. He brought me here because I was in no position to return to the chambers and face so many people. I was glad he thought that.

But as the council member now and the alpha who did so much for me, he needed to report everything to the council.

He walked away to make the call, and I stood from my place to bathe and get dressed.

Walking inside the bathroom, I dropped the shirt and looked at my naked body in the full-length mirror.

The marks from the event were still gracing my body. The burnt marks because I struggled so hard against those silver chains when my body was in no situation to heal because of the wolfsbane indeed affected me negatively.

But these were my battle marks. At least I was able to remove those shackles around me.

I was thankful to Maverick and Happy for coming in time and saving me, though I was then ready to die while fighting if that was what the situation demanded.

Taking a deep breath, I turned around and looked at my reflection on the back.

The shackles made some marks on my back, too, but they were still less prominent than the birthmark in the middle of my back.

Looking at myself, I remembered my dream before waking up, the dream that replaced the nightmare I usually see.

I woke up in a forest. It was beautiful. Peaceful and something that felt heavenly.

No. There was no beautiful scenery before me. It was a regular forest. But the air, the vibes radiating from it, felt like they were calming my raging heart.

I looked down at my feet when I felt like I wasn’t standing anything. Seeing a weird white haze, I knew this was either my imagination or a dream.

"How have you been, my little one?" I heard a woman’s voice that sounded strangely familiar in my head.

Turning around, I tried to find the source of the voice that was caressing my heart, making it ache with yearning and lack of affection, something that I felt like I needed.

"I... I am.. who are you?" I asked.

I couldn’t say I was okay. I wasn’t okay after what happened to me, with me. Could anyone really be alright?

"I am someone who vowed to protect you with her life. I am an unfortunate wolf who couldn’t withhold her promise for more than 24 hours," The woman spoke.

I looked into the distance from where a weird white light emanated as if it were the only light source in this world.

A lady’s form started to appear from that white light, and as soon as her face became visible, I widened my eyes.

"Mumma?" I whispered, my heart aching terribly.

I recognized her immediately.

I wouldn’t have ever if I hadn’t seen her face before in that photo, but how could I mistake her for anyone now after knowing everything?

"My child. I am sorry for what you had to go through. However, you are my strong child, aren’t you? You will be alright and do just fine. For yourself, for people around you, for me. Let your emotions out. Don’t suppress anything," The woman, my mother, said as she stepped ahead and extended her hand towards me.

I was afraid—there was no lie to it. I was scared of touching her, fearful that she would vanish the moment I touched her fingers.

Why? Because I knew she was dead and this was just a dream. I just wanted to look at her for longer, and thus, I didn’t hold her hand.

She smiled before stepping closer and placing the hand over my head. She caressed my head, and tears brimmed my eyes immediately.

"Why did you have to leave me, mumma? I... I have been alone for so long. So much happened? I don’t know how to do anything. I feel lost and –" I started complaining before stopping.

No. What was I doing? How could I start complaining to her like a spoiled brat right after seeing her? What will she think of me?

She would think I was a spoiled brat who didn’t cherish this moment.

I took a deep breath and was about to ask her what had happened that night, but she smiled at me dazzlingly, like an angel that had descended from heaven.

And why not? My mom was indeed an angel.

"I know what has been going on, my little one. It pains me that my baby has to go through all this, but you must know that you are also the chosen one," My mother cupped my cheeks.

"You are my special one, someone I am proud of. You are the best thing that has happened to me, and even if I died protecting you, I am so glad I did. You have a bigger purpose in life, baby. I know you fear what is happening around you, but give it time. Everything will be sorted out. Besides, you have mine and your dad’s best wishes," my mother said.

I shook my head.

I didn’t want to be the chosen one. I know my mom sacrificed a lot for me; what was more important than her life and my father’s life? But even after that, I didn’t want to be the special kid because it would only bring misery to people I cared about.

As if my mother understood my dilemma, she smiled.

She suddenly looked behind her as if she was running short of time.

"Let me tell you something. The red coral everyone is looking for is inside you, my love. The red coral that has been demanded in the black market is you. That’s the reason he will come for you. Tears flowed down my cheeks at the realization.

She was gone without even saying bye.

Why did she leave like that?

I took a deep breath and again wiped the rogue tears that rolled down my cheeks.

’Valencia,’ Aurora spoke, snapping my attention to herself.

This was the tenth time Aurora tried to talk, but I didn’t know if I was ready to talk to her.

She could’ve let me shift. I know it would’ve revealed our true selves to the world, and I might’ve faced a heavy backlash, but at least I would’ve been proud of myself for fighting back with all I had.

She left me hopeless when I really needed her help.
