Beast Alpha and His Cursed Luna -
Chapter 257: Can’t Reject the Mate
Chapter 257: Can’t Reject the Mate
THIRD PERSON’S POV
"Have you lost your mind?" This was the first thing that came out of Alpha Maverick’s mouth after he recovered from his initial shock.
The woman smiled. She was full of confidence and a mature charm, her eyes full of grace as she looked back at the alpha.
"Certainly. I have realized what I lost and have come back to ask for a second chance at love. You didn’t reject me for so long that you won’t be liable to reject me immediately either," Cordelia said, repeatedly reminding him of his mistake.
Maverick clenched his fists before looking at Valencia. Seeing the light in her eyes dimming and her once-beaming face so dull like this, he felt his heart skip a beat.
He had already made her disappointed once in the evening; he would be damned if his woman thought he was going back to this woman who betrayed him and gave him the biggest sorrow and trauma of his life.
"Va-" He started, but Cordelia interrupted again before he could speak.
"I know you always wanted me to give birth to your heir. At that time, I was young and dumb, but now I am ready, Maverick. I am ready to be yours," Cordelia smiled.
A growl reverberated in the otherwise silent hall, and everyone gulped as they looked at the seething Alpha.
"You better shut your trash, woman! I don’t even want to take your disgusting name with my mouth, let alone touch you. The only reason I am listening to your stupid yapping is because, unlike you, I still have some manners intact," Maverick spat, his eyes turning amber.
Cordelia smiled again.
She was least fazed by the angry alpha, who looked like death to others. She knew she had the power within herself to calm him if things went haywire.
She took a deep breath before looking at Valencia.
"You hate your sister because she came between you and Alpha Tyler, right? Because your mate slept with another woman even after knowing you were his mate, right? Will you be okay being the second woman in this relationship?" She asked her.
Valencia paused. She was ready to counterfeit this woman’s every word against herself, but when she put things like these, she was indeed humbled.
Why did Alpha Maverick not accept the rejection even after his woman rejected him? Was he in love with her? He said he wasn’t, but it was natural for him to say it out of anger. Now that she was back, why wasn’t he rejecting her? Did she hold anything against him?
Multiple questions started to swirl in her mind, and she clenched her fists on her dress helplessly.
Seeing Valencia being put in a spot like this, Matilda couldn’t help but smirk inside her head.
Very well, she had thought about asking another team of rogues to come for Valencia and humiliate her so she would forget Tyler’s humiliation and bask in the happiness.
But who would’ve thought the return of the mate of the Alpha Maverick would be more than enough to humiliate Valencia publicly like this?
Matilda suppressed her urge to scoff out loud and call Valencia a whore for sleeping with a man with a mate because that was exactly what the girl had called her.
Maverick, on the other hand, growled when Cordilia targeted his woman like this. He was on the verge of letting his wolf take over and choke the woman until her lifeless body was snapped into two.
"What nonsense are you spouting?! The reason I didn’t reject you on the same night was that I was shocked by your betrayal and the death of my parents. There was no such meaning behind it. Since you are stuck on this issue, let me help you. I, Alpha Maverick Aurelius, reject Cordelia Maze as my mate and rightful Luna of the Dark Callisto Pack,"
Maverick said.
Nothing happened.
Nothing changed.
Maverick looked at his wolf helplessly, who sighed before shaking his head.
The smile on Cordelia’s face widened.
"Aww, aren’t you too hasty to reject me, Alpha? I knew you would act like this. That was why, rather than going to your pack, I came straight to the council because I knew I would be provided justice here," The woman smiled before she looked around, her gaze meeting with one man briefly before taking a deep breath.
"Well, I hope you are well-versed with the werewolf laws. If you don’t reject your mate back at the same time the person rejected you, it is considered a chance from your side for redemption. The maximum bar considered is three months, and we have been mates for more than seven years, right?" Cordelia mused.
The words were loud and clear.
She didn’t need to explain to Maverick why he couldn’t reject her, and the man stood frozen.
’Reaper, what is she talking about? What the hell is going on here?’ He asked, and the wolf looked at his human counterpart helplessly.
He didn’t have anything to say to comfort him. That was indeed the truth. As much as he hated accepting it, what Cordelia said was right. There was nothing he had or could think of to counterfeit this.
’I am afraid,’ Reaper said, not even finishing his sentence, his heart aching. Maverick looked at Jonathan, who was the best person to answer all these questions.
Jonathan didn’t say anything and just looked down at his feet.
The indication was clear. They were indeed helpless. It meant that he indeed couldn’t reject Corde;ia on the spot, but till when? Till when he couldn’t reject her? Why was there a rule like this in the first place? His mate didn’t leave because she wanted to pursue her career or because she wasn’t ready for the bond.
He was betrayed! His freaking mate had cheated on him with his brother! What the hell was so hard to understand? Was this reason not supposed to be enough to allow him to reject this cunning woman and throw her out of his life for once and all?
Cordelia smiled at Maverick’s helplessness before walking to him and daringly placing her hand on his chest.
"Now that we have decided I am not going anywhere, shall we have our first dance? It’s been a long time since you last touched me," Cordelia whispered into his ears, her words loud and clear to everyone.
People started to whisper among themselves, no one daring enough to say a word against the alpha or this new woman who was too confident and well-prepared to counter everything.
Prince Ethan looked at Alpha Maverick, a smirk appearing on his lips.
"That was really atrocious of you, Alpha Maverick. How can you announce another woman as your Luna without even rejecting your mate? Aren’t you playing with the feelings of two women? Even if this woman meant nothing to you, you should’ve at least left some benefit of the doubt to Miss Valencia rather than leaving her in the dark," Prince Ethan said, and Maverick clenched his teeth.
He jerked Cordelia’s hand away from his chest before turning to Prince Ethan.
"You–" he started but paused, his heart skipping a beat when he finally felt his woman move.
He didn’t need to turn around to see she was walking away, so he stopped talking and immediately turned around.
"Valencia, wait. Listen to me," Maverick said, walking towards Valencia in long strides. The girl stopped.
She briefly turned to look at him before taking a deep breath.
"I am going to hold you accountable for your announcement, Maverick. Reaper made a promise to me, and I hope he keeps it. I trust you. Don’t break it." Valencia’s words were crisp, leaving no room for any discussion, and the man’s eyes turned glassy for a second before he quickly blinked the tears away.
His woman trusted him. That was the only thing he needed.
"Trust me. This all is a trap. She is here because I have finally captured my brother Alfonso. It all begins with the rogues head of the Southern regions," Maverick explained, and Valencia hummed.
"I know," She said before leaving the hall.
She knew all about it even if Maverick didn’t tell her anything.
She wasn’t the best spy of the council for no reason.
Apart from her own skills, she had the best team who was working diligently for her, telling her each and everything that was happening near the Dark Callisto pack.
Thus, she didn’t doubt that he was telling the truth, not after that talk on the hill where he told her what exactly happened that night seven years ago when his parents were brutally murdered, and his brother and mate betrayed him.
What hurt her more than anything was the fact that he accepted her back.
And even after knowing that, he made promises to her with an unsolved mess on his plate.
Even if his conscience was clear, he should’ve known this thorn would prick him in the future.
Valencia shook her head and left the corridor, heading straight towards the flower fields that always calmed her nerves.
