Chapter 227: The person behind the attack

VALENCIA’S POV

I wanted to enjoy these hot kisses and the way he was handling my body with so much care and affection, but at the same time, I needed to know what was going on.

I hated being helpless and out of the circle the most; it would indeed play with my sleep.

Thus, even when my body was practically begging me to have him inside me and feel the hotness of his body plastered against mine while we danced in the tempo of our desire and the pool of our arousal, I pushed him away with all the strength I could muster.

"Maverick, you can’t always slip up with the kissing and everything. I need answers this time. Why did you ask if I knew him? Have you found out anything about him?" I asked.

Maverick looked at me before humming and taking a deep breath.

He didn’t completely detach himself from me. Instead of kissing me, he started playing with the helm of my clothes, a clear indication that these pieces of clothing would be coming off as soon as we ended our topic.

Blush rose to my cheeks, and I bit the inside of my cheeks to keep a straight face, which was surely becoming a tough job.

"Well," Maverick started playing with my hair instead before taking a deep breath.

"Well?" I asked, urging him to continue.

"Before that, tell me if you have ever seen or met him. Do you have some kind of feud with him, or if you ever killed his people?" Maverick asked.

I didn’t like where this was going, but I shook my head nonetheless.

"I have never met him or killed his people as far as I know. I have killed rogues in the past, quite a good number of them, but-" I shook my head again.

I would’ve known if the team ever belonged to the northern rogue head.

"He has been found lingering in the state, and we are unsure about the certainty of the matter, but it looks like he has handed in the random notes you have been receiving, especially through the bow he has been using," Maverick said.

I froze in my place.

The rogue head of the Northern regions was behind me.

As much as it looked like false information, I had no reason to rebuke either.

I have killed ample rogues because of how sometimes they act rudely and try to harass me in the wild.

And no matter how strict his rules are, people are bound to have drifting emotions. Lust is common among men who think she-wolves are lower than them.

What if I indeed killed someone precious to him?

Well, in that case, it must have happened because the person deserved it, and if the rogue head was coming for me because of that, I was more than ready to fight back.

He was my idol because of his work, but that didn’t mean I was going to allow anyone to harm me or my people.

"I got it," I nodded, making a mental note to call Theo, Tory, and Jason and let them know what was happening here.

Maverick said nothing for a few seconds and kept looking at me before sighing.

"How do you do it? How can you be so calm in a situation like this? Anyone would become nervous and anxious after hearing the rogue head is behind them," Maverick said.

I smiled.

I would’ve been anxious, too.

There was no lie to it. For a girl living alone who interacts with rogues quite often and indeed has felt the horror of being stalked, I would’ve felt nervous, probably scared.

However, for some reason, I wasn’t.

I looked at the man who was waiting for my answers and shifted closer to him. I then sat on his lap with my legs on either side of him, hugging him like a koala bear, which he let me do effortlessly.

"I am not anxious because I know you are here with me," I whispered.

I wasn’t as confused about my feelings as I had been earlier. His presence influenced the changes I felt in my heart, attitude, and everything else.

As soon as I said those words, I felt his heart skip a beat before it picked its pace, and I smiled, loving that I had that kind of effect on him.

Hugging him tighter, I placed my head on the crook of his neck, inhaling his intoxicating scent.

"You smell nice, like home," I whispered, taking deep breaths into his scent.

The man smiled against my neck before humming.

I furrowed my brows.

Why was he not saying anything?

Pulling away from his embrace, I looked at the man’s face, my pupils dilating when I saw his red ears and neck.

Was he really blushing because I complimented him?

’Isn’t he the cutest man we have met?’ Aurora said, and I nodded.

Fucking adorable and ready to be fucked.

I whispered to her, Maverick’s raised brows letting me know I said those words loud.

I chuckled at myself. I was letting myself a hell of a lot more than needed before him.

"I love you," Maverick whispered, looking into my eyes. I swear, if it was technically possible, he would’ve been able to see the heart forming in my eyes.

It’s just... I don’t know how to describe this feeling.

Whenever he says these words, I can’t control the happiness I feel in my heart. It’s like an entire garden of flowers blooming and spreading its scent throughout my system.

"You are like the first ray of sunshine that warms my heart on the winter day. You came into my life like the cool breeze on a bit of a summer day," He said, tucking my hair behind my ears.

I raised my brows at him.

"Are you sure I was just a gust of cool breeze, not a storm of winds? Probably a tornado?" I asked.

He grinned before nodding.

"You definitely put my heart into a great turmoil like a tornado," He said.

I hummed before leaning on his chest.

"Thank you," I said to him.

I didn’t want to specify what I was thankful for.

There were just so many things. Starting from how he trusted me, cared for me, took a stand for me even when he didn’t know anything about me, tried hard to understand me, worked hard to win me over, and allowed me to have enough space to judge and like him.

Yes, there were times when he pushed himself into my life deliberately, all those forceful kisses and touching, but I won’t lie and say I didn’t like it.

I liked every second of it.

"I have to leave sometime. I don’t want to hide anything from you. It’s not confirmed yet, but I think my brother is planning all these rogue attacks," Maverick dropped the bomb on me, and I raised my brows.

What did he say?

His brother? The one who ran away all those years ago when their pack was attacked, and his parents died? Didn’t he also take his mate and -

I paused.

He must be really hurt.

His brother ruined his life once, taking away all the happiness from him, and now he was back to hurt him again.

But why did he come after so many years? He was quiet for so long.

"Because I have you now," Maverick answered my question, making me realize I asked that loudly.

"Me?" I pointed at myself, confused.

"What does have to do -" I started but paused.

Anger took over my heart, and I pushed him away.

How dare he even think of something as lowly as this? Does he think I was a woman with low and cheap morals?

I glared at him before pulling my hands from his grip.

"If you think I am going to fall for anyone, then—" I couldn’t complete my sentence as the man placed his finger on my lips, stopping me from saying anything at all.

"I would rather choose to insult myself before everyone than question your morals, Valencia. How could you think I would think of something so shameless?" Maverick cupped my cheeks, forcing me to look into his eyes.

He sighed before pecking my pouty lips.

"I simply mean he has come because of you because he can’t see me happy. He has been keeping an eye on me ever since and now that he knows I am finally finding happiness in you, he is trying to harm you. He probably knows he can’t get you on his side," Maverick said.

I sighed and hummed.

I was about to tell him I would take care of things myself when his phone vibrated, and he stood up from his seat to attend the call.

I looked at the man’s back before looking at my phone, which had an incoming call from Theo.

I was about to call him either way.

I grabbed the phone and walked out of the room to see what he wanted to inform me.

"Yes?" I asked as soon as I picked up the call to let them know it was me answering it.

"Have you been attacked recently?" He asked, and I paused.

Well, I didn’t intend to tell them anything about it...

"How do you know about it?" I asked.

It was pretty strange.

Have they deployed spies on me now?

"Well, a particular someone is conspiring against you and taking help from the rogues, so of course, we were bound to know," He said.

"Who?" I asked, not liking the statement.

"You know very well," Theo said, and my blood boiled at the thought.

So they have indeed come to this.

Maverick thinks his brother is behind me, but who would tell him that it wasn’t his brother alone?

I clenched my teeth.
