Beast Alpha and His Cursed Luna -
Chapter 174: Reason behind Alpha Maverick’s hatred for rogues
Chapter 174: Reason behind Alpha Maverick’s hatred for rogues
VALENCIA’S POV
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Maverick asked me as I swung my legs, feeling a little adventurous out of the blue.
"Like what?" I raised my brows at him.
"It’s like you want to do something naughty and want me to support you," he said, and I rolled my eyes.
It amazes me how well he can read my expressions without me hinting at it or him being able to read my mind or something.
I shook my head.
"It’s just..." I trailed off, wanting to change the topic.
"Just?" He probed more.
"You look lonely and well..." I cleared my throat.
"Well?" The Alpha looked at me with a condescending smile.
"Broken. Like someone who has fought many battles, someone who has been hurt," I said.
I didn’t say that because I wanted to change the topic. This was something I felt from him a long time ago, and now that I saw his sad face while he was thinking about his parents and how his mate left him, too, I kind of understood why he looked like that.
No one wants to act tough all the time. Everyone craves affection, but it was just his bad luck that everybody who could give him that was taken away from him.
He didn’t say anything for a few seconds before he took a deep breath. Grabbing my hand, he pulled me closer so our bodies almost touched, and I sighed.
My heart seriously needs to stop acting haywire like that. Because of this stupid, untrustworthy organ, he always finds out how his words and actions affect me.
"It’s true. And thus, I am ready to fight even more battles if it promises what I want," Alpha Maverick said after some time.
"And what do you want?" I asked with a sweet smile.
I just wanted to ease the mood a little. But I had never thought that rather than improving my mood, I would rather dig a hole for myself.
"Death. Death of all the rogues for what they did to me," Alpha Maverick said, looking straight into my eyes. I gulped, feeling frozen at the spot.
"You are not a rogue, are you?" Alpha Maverick looked at me as if trying to gauge my reaction.
It took everything in me to maintain the smile so he wouldn’t suspect anything as his hand caressed my cheeks, making me smile awkwardly.
Now, who was supposed to tell him I was indeed a rogue, and not just any typical rogue, but one wanted by the entire nation because of what I was doing to most of the alphas?
I cleared my throat.
"Can you tell me what exactly happened with your parents? Only if you are comfortable," I asked.
His smile dropped, and he sighed.
"It was the eve of my parents’ anniversary, and they just suggested they were going to announce who would become the alpha of our pack," Maverick said before taking a deep breath.
I held his hand to comfort him, and he smiled at me.
"I found my mate only a couple of days ago. It was quite strange for me because though my wolf called her my mate, for some reason, we didn’t feel the kind of attachment or connection with her like those described by our parents or in those books. That was why I did not claim her immediately," Maverick cleared his throat.
I looked at him pitifully. It was clearly hard for him.
Feeling a little guilty, I was about to tell him to stop speaking when he continued.
"I did not know what exactly happened. One moment, we were celebrating the event with our pack members, and the other, we heard a loud blast echo in our pack house," Maverick said.
He then told me how their house started to crumble, and a big fire started on the first floor.
It began in his brother’s room, and everyone was worried about him because he couldn’t be seen anywhere.
Everything happened so quickly that it was hard for him to comprehend things. Afraid it was a rogue attack, his father ordered him to leave and ensure everything was in the pack.
He did as he was told and rushed out of the pack house, announcing to people with his mind-link to stay in their homes until it was urgent.
It was a rogue attack, and with his team, he rushed to the borders to stop the rogues from entering the pack and see what was wrong.
He fought 49 rogues that night and was about to kill his 50th rogue when he felt it.
A gunshot echoed in the environment amidst all the screams and wailings. It was so clear, and the direction was so precise that he felt scared.
But the breaking of his bond with his mother made him immediately rush to the pack house.
Something happened to his mother, and he released an angry growl of helplessness. He was going to blame his father for not being able to protect their mother, but he had only crossed half of the pack when he heard another gunshot, louder than before, and the bond with his father snapped.
He froze for a second before he used his maximum speed and reached the house.
There, in the middle of the hall, was his parents’ dead body.
His mother’s body, who was shot earlier, had already caught fire while his father’s body was lying under the concrete pillar that fell over him after he got shot.
He was in pain but knew he needed to protect his people. That was what his parents taught him. No matter what happened to anyone or himself, his pack should always come first. That was the actual quality of an alpha, and he was an alpha.
He had wanted to see where his mate and brother were to ensure they were alright when he heard some arguments at some distance.
It was coming from the kitchen, and he furrowed his brows.
Were his mate and brother really arguing at a time like this?
He walked to the kitchen and was ready to scold them and ask them to snap out of it because they needed to find justice for their parents when he saw something that broke his heart completely.
There in front of him was his mate, kissing his brother while his brother was holding the gun that was probably used to shoot their parents dead.
For a few seconds, he even contemplated whether what he saw was true or a dream.
However, the pain he felt was too real for it to be a dream.
"What’s going on here?" That was the first sentence he uttered, and his mate looked at him dead in the eyes with a smirk.
"I am sorry, Alpha Maverick. You are handsome and Powerful, but your brother turns me on and makes me want to spread my legs for him. Thus, I, Amira Benning, reject Alpha Maverick as her mate," his mate said to him, and Maverick looked at his brother for an explanation.
He was supposed to feel the pain of the breaking of the bond, but the pain of the loss of his parents, his brother’s betrayal, and everything was so much that he couldn’t feel anything anymore.
His heart went numb at that time.
"You killed our parents for this kind of bitch?" Maverick asked his brother, who shook his head at him.
He was pretending. Maverick knew his brother was pretending because he wanted the alpha’s position, and he had heard about it more than a few times.
He wanted the alpha’s position, and his mate was a hungry bitch who wanted power. That was why they colluded with the rogues to kill their parents and probably him, too.
He had only thought about it when he heard a whoosh of wind, and Maverick jumped to the side, barely saving himself from the dagger.
He looked behind him and then glared at his brother.
He would’ve taken the rejection from the mate quickly, but his brother’s betrayal?
That was the first time he had changed into his Wolf’s beast form, Reaper, who was half wolf and half Lycan.
"This is the moment where you run if you want to save your life," Maverick said.
Even after everything, he still did not have it in himself to lose another family member, so he let him go.
Once his brother ran away, Reaper killed all the rogues that had entered his pack one by one while growling and snarling to ooze out his pain.
That was the most painful night of his life when he lost hope in love.
He wanted to mourn his parents’ deaths, but without an alpha, their pack was more prone to attack from other alphas, too. Thus, he took over the pack, burying his sorrow.
Probably, that was the reason why he came here every year to look at his pack and mourn his parents’ death silently, the only time when he let his heart feel the pain and remain human.
As I heard Maverick’s story, I couldn’t help but feel my eyes brimming with tears.
He has gone through so much in life, and even after that, he was willing to test his love and affection with me, a girl who was exactly what he hated.
