Chapter 172: Permit him

ALPHA MAVERICK’S POV

I looked at the woman that I had chosen for myself to spend my life with, rejecting my thoughtful gift and running away as if rather than giving her the family heirloom, I was giving her some kind of poison to drink.

’I told you it wouldn’t work,’ Reaper said, and I scratched my head.

I thought he was just a wolf and wouldn’t know much about human emotions, but who would’ve thought he would be the right one and I would end up making a fool out of myself?

I don’t understand, though.

If I had given this dagger to any other she-wolf I knew, they would have jumped in delight. Why was Valencia’s reaction so different? It was like she was afraid of getting tied to me.

Did she not feel anything for me?

It’s been a couple of days since I made a trip to her apartment despite my busy schedule so I could see her and propose the idea of joining the Alphas Meet as my partner.

However, no matter what time I arrive, I haven’t been able to see her.

Today, I had all the intentions of hunting her down and kidnapping her if that was what it would’ve taken to bring her to talk to me.

But who would’ve thought my plans would turn out like this?

I caught her running away again, making me think I was the only one who wanted us to be together.

I can see the desire in her eyes, the concern and care in her eyes.

Then what the hell has been stopping her from coming to me?

I gritted my teeth and was about to walk towards the apartments to get my answer when Reaper’s words made me stop.

’She wasn’t ready for this, Maverick. Don’t you think you should focus on diminishing all her doubts about yourself rather than forcing yourself on her? She is scared of commitment. Why? Her mate has rejected her. Wasn’t that exactly how she ended up in the council, where there were barely any females?’ Reaper said.

I paused.

Was what he said true?

Then again, if I think about it, what have I ever offered to her that she would consider me a spouse or future partner? Is someone worthy of her love?

I sighed and looked at the dagger in my hand. I couldn’t help but smile at how she fell into my hands.

She thought she could run away from me. Maybe it’s because she doesn’t know what an obsessive Alpha I can be. Even if she runs away and hides in hell, I will fight Satan for her to bring her back to my pack and make her mine.

That was the kind of obsession I have felt for her since I saw her.

The funny thing was, my wolf once said she was our mate. This kind of obsession with someone was unrealistic, but who cared?

As long as she has that desired look in her eyes and the seducing charm whenever she looks at me, I will keep trying.

Heck, who was I kidding? If she got a man by her side who wasn’t her mate, I would kill that man to make her mine.

She was like a kill shot that shot my heart, and I couldn’t think about anything else but her.

Even though my pack was about to host one of the most significant events for any pack, I was busy courting her and trying to get her to agree to come to me.

It was epic.

"Sir, why are you standing here? Has something happened?" Shadow walked to me, and I looked at him before taking a deep breath.

"No. Isn’t the weather nice?" I asked before stepping inside the building to wait for the elevator.

I saw Shadow looking at the sky and couldn’t help but shake my head at him.

He was seriously one kind of a man.

As soon as I walked into the apartment, I noticed Valencia sitting on the couch. I bit my lips when I saw her guilty look.

"Seriously? Tell me. Is this the way to do things? How can you jump balconies like that even after I told you yesterday not to do it again, and you agreed to it? Do you find it funny? What are your hand slips or something like that? Must you bring danger into your life? How are you rebelling?" Dylan asked her as she nipped at her nails.

I walked to the couch she was sitting in and sat at a respectable distance so she wouldn’t feel uncomfortable.

But to my surprise, rather than running away from me, she actually turned to me with a sheepish smile, her eyes captivating me in a second.

This was what I was talking about.

The way she looks at me, how can I not fall for her?

I blinked, trying to decipher what she was trying to say with her eyes. Thinking she probably just wanted me to save her from the scolding she was receiving, I took a deep breath and nodded at her.

"Stop scolding her. I am here to discuss some serious matter," I said to Dylan, who sighed and looked between us before shaking his head.

"Stop defending her, Alpha Maverick. Once this meeting is over, I will take her back to teach her a good lesson to the council," Dylan said.

As soon as I heard those words, I suddenly felt a pang of ache and looked at the man sitting before us.

He gazed at me as if gauging my intention with her or trying to predict what I would do.

I barely hummed. There was no use in getting all handsy and defensive over her when I knew that wouldn’t happen. I won’t let that happen at all.

"Sir, we received the news," Shadow entered the room, and I nodded at him.

"This better be good," I told him, and he nodded.

"We have found the information regarding the bow and arrow," Shadow said, and I sighed.

I read the information he showed me on the tab, trying my best to control my annoyance.

The bow and arrow—how could I forget about them? The man who was trying to claim Valencia as hers.

For a moment, I had thought that the rogue head wouldn’t dare to make a mistake of that kind and probably hired someone to do the job.

Why? None of our intel provided any information about new rogues entering the city or state for any purpose.

But I was wrong. The rogue had used a bow and arrow, and the fact that he came and went away without being noticed by our intel was enough to tell us that we were genuinely unprepared for the rogues of his team to attack us.

How will we attack them if we won’t be able to smell them or know they are rogues? They have mastered the chemicals that can hide their true scent, but what will we do when they start making scents that would make them smell similar to humans?

They can’t mimic a pack wolf’s scent because every scent is unique to their pack in some ways, but they can definitely do it with humans.

I sighed and looked at Shadow.

"Well, let’s get over this Alphas meet before moving against the rogue head, shall we?" I asked.

I was about to turn to go inside the room when I looked at Shadow, who seemed to want to say something. I couldn’t help but nod at him to urge him to say what he wanted.

"What’s the matter?" I asked.

"Sir, the alpha of the Hazel Moon pack sent us a fax asking us if he could come a little earlier," he said.

I furrowed my brows.

Alpha Tyler. Why would he want to come to our pack two days early to the event when his pack is in such a controversy?

Won’t that be a stupid move? Just what the hell goes inside the head of this man?

"Did he say anything about why he would like to do that? Does he think we are providing alphas with honeymoon packages, too?" I asked.

Shadow cleared his throat.

"He said something related to coming to find out about a few things. Some of his pack members are living here that he has been able to connect to, and that’s why he wants to come early to do the same," Shadow explained.

I understood his point.

Since the alphas’ meeting was near, no one from the other packs was allowed to enter the city without my permission, as a protocol for safety insurance.

That was why he wanted my permission.

But still, shouldn’t he focus on his pack first? I wondered.

"Well, in that case, he can come. Though I would want one of our spies to keep a constant look at his activities," I said to Shadow, who nodded in understanding and left.
