Chapter 166: An attack or warning?

ALPHA MAVERICK’S POV

I have never met such an annoying girl like Valencia in my life. And I am saying this with experience. Though I don’t interact with girls, she has been the only bane of my existence so far.

’Well, isn’t she cute?’ Reaper asked me, and I glared at him.

As if this girl wasn’t enough, he had to come and mock me.

I looked at the girl who was sleeping in my arms without a care in the world.

How can someone be like this? She was the one who provoked me to that level and told me she wasn’t afraid of going all the way. And now that I was ready to do it and aroused to this level, she had to fall asleep in my arms.

I was considering throwing her into the lake to have her eyes wide open. Still, seeing her sleeping so peacefully, as if she trusted me with everything and that I wouldn’t let anything happen to her, I couldn’t help but square my jaws and bear with it.

As I sat with her on the couch of her lake house, I glared at the girl before glaring at the tent in my pants.

Left with no choice, I placed her on the couch and stood from my place.

I took out a candy from my pocket, something I started to keep inside my pocket for her, and I saw her smiling when Dylan gave her one. I looked at the girl, observing her carefully.

Something was fishy about her.

She wasn’t just a normal girl working for the council. Even if we consider her lantern trait, there was more going on here than she or the council was letting me into.

Earlier, I used to think Valencia was raising that cat, but tonight, for the first time, I contemplated whether she was the cat herself.

I have never thought much about things like that, but her eyes. When I looked into that cat’s eyes today, I almost felt like I was looking into Valencia’s eyes.

Those expressive eyes...and even if we ignore that fact, what about how that cat was running?

It wasn’t an average cat. Though I wasn’t using my entire alpha speed, she was still outrunning an alpha, and an average cat can’t do that, no matter what kind of species it is.

The thought of this cat being a shapeshifter appeared in my head for the first time. Was it just a coincidence that Valencia appeared in the place where the cat disappeared?

That Jaguar was used as a distraction, and I really had to tie him up to the tree with my belt just to ensure he didn’t hinder me.

Even in the past, though we all know that cat belonged to Valencia, we have not seen both of them together, right?

The only person who claimed to have seen them together was the Dean, who was human. What did he know?

What if Valencia grabbed another cat to trick him into thinking that?

With the kind of cunning girl she was, it wasn’t hard to imagine.

I walked to the patio and took a deep breath.

Something was fishy, for sure. I nodded, looking at the lake in the distance.

’Do you have nothing to say?’ I asked my wolf after some time.

He has been reticent since I started thinking about the possibility of them being the same.

Usually, he has so much to offer and exchange. What happened now?

’I don’t know if they are the same or not; all I know is that I want to raise that cat and fuck that girl,’ Reaper said, and I sighed.

Well, that was insightful.

I shook my head at him before walking to the couch where the girl was sleeping soundly, but her brows furrowed.

"No. Don’t. Please, I beg you. Hey! They are still inside! Somebody save them!"

She murmured in her sleep.

She was probably having a nightmare.

What was she really dreaming about that was so painful for her? I wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes before placing my finger in the middle of her forehead to ease the crease of her skin.

As soon as I wiped her tears, I didn’t know if it was a coincidence, but a thunder echoed, almost surprising me because I wasn’t expecting that.

The sky was clear when we came here; what was this thundering all about?

"It’s just a nightmare, sweetheart. Everything is fine," I whispered into her ears repeatedly so she would calm down.

However, to my surprise, rather than calming down, she whimpered even louder.

"Please save them," she whimpered.

Who were these people she was dreaming about and wanted to save? Was it her parents? No, it can’t be. The last time we talked, didn’t she say something about being abandoned by her loved ones?

So many mysteries circled her, and the way I fell for her made me question everything.

Was it okay to fall for her when I didn’t know about anything related to her?

She wasn’t a bad person—I was sure of that. Though she acts unhinged and doesn’t care about her future or life at all, she has always placed everyone before herself.

This one trait of hers makes me want to protect her, love her even more, and give her the care that she deserves.

"Come on, hey, wake up," I patted her cheeks, not wanting to see her crying like this.

When she didn’t wake up, even after trying for some time, I had no choice but to kiss her.

’You are taking advantage of a sleeping girl?’ Reaper asked me, and I rolled my eyes at him.

"Yes, I am taking advantage of her. If that’s what will make her open her eyes, I am ready to do this," I told my wolf and was about to continue kissing her when, out of the blue, I heard the sound of the windows breaking.

It started with the sound of a small crack before it burst, and shards of glass flew in random directions, making me shield her immediately with my body.

The sound was so loud that Valencia immediately came out of her nightmare and looked around hastily.

"What’s happening?" She looked at me, the look of fear in her eyes, probably from the nightmare, breaking my heart.

It was almost as if time had stopped for a moment. I kept looking into her eyes, knowing how dangerous it was.

Someone was probably attacking us, and rather than acting on it, I was busy looking into her eyes.

But could I help myself?

As I looked into her fearful eyes, a random sentence struck my head, and I knew I was a goner at that moment.

’I can kill anyone to protect her,’ I thought before taking a deep breath.

"Nothing is going to happen to you. Can I ask you to trust me?" I asked.

She looked around at the broken glass, her fingers digging into my skin as she hugged me and kept me in place around her as if scared I would disappear from her sight.

After what felt like an eternity but was only a few seconds, she nodded gently, which was more than enough for me to decide what to do next.

"Hide under the table in the corner. Let me see what’s going on," I said, feeling the love of a mate for the first time.

Yes. I knew she wasn’t my mate or lover, but at that moment, I felt like I was.

The sudden urge to do anything to make her smile was akin to something a mate must feel for their lover.

And if this wasn’t talking hard for her, I didn’t know what was.

I walked outside the house and immediately saw something shining at some distance.

My alpha instincts worked immediately, and I barely dodged the arrow that was shot toward me.

I wanted to run in the direction to catch the culprit, but running towards him would only mean leaving Valencia unattended and open to risk and harm, which was the last thing I wanted to happen.

"What is it?" Valencia asked, her voice trembling a little, and I sighed.

"It’s nothing, Mitsuki. You stay where you are," I said before contacting my team to let them know what was happening there.

"We will be there shortly, sir. The team left to check things already," Shadow said, and I hummed before ending the contact.

With a sigh, I was about to walk back inside the house after checking around to see no one was lurking in the dark when my gaze fell on the arrow.

Why didn’t I notice it earlier? There was no note plastered to it.

It could only mean that whoever this person was, he was here to warn us about something.

I pulled the note from around the arrow before opening it.

I thought it was a threat to Valencia or something related, but what I read next made my pupils dilate.

"Stay away from her. She is mine," The note said, and I looked at the girl who was sitting under the table like I told her, deep in thought.

I looked back at the note before taking a deep breath.

Stay away from her? In your dream. I scoffed, wanting to shout these words at anyone who sent this note.
