Chapter 158: Birth parents

Chapter 158: Birth parents

VALENCIA’S POV

I walked to the park, feeling a little heavy.

No matter what Happy or Alina did or how they acted, I couldn’t take my mind off what Alpha Maverick said.

His hatred towards rogues runs deep down indeed.

Will I ever be able to tell him what I was at this pace? Getting accepted by him now looked like a far-fetched case.

How long can I really let things go like this? Sooner or later, I will be exposed. What will happen after that?

After eating the snacks I ordered, I walked out of my apartment because it was literally hard staying in the same space as hers without breaking.

I wasn’t some weak ass person, but the realization was drowning me, and it was making me angry. It was making me want to go rogue, and rogue in a way everyone would know who the hell fucking I was.

And that was one thing that would end up terribly for everyone around me.

I asked Aurora her opinions on the matter, but she didn’t have anything to say either.

What would she have to say about this? There was no option out of it.

I sat on the swing before closing my eyes to calm my emotions.

"Is something bothering you?" I heard Dylan’s familiar voice from some distance.

But I didn’t open my eyes.

"Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone," I said, enjoying the swing.

I could feel his presence nearing before he pushed the swing softly behind me.

"You do realize that you can’t hide anything from me. I have seen your highs and lows, how you lie, and the ’I can do everything’ phase with the ’I don’t want anyone to know anything’ phase. So don’t try to pretend to be normal in front of me," Dylan said.

I finally opened my eyes and stopped the swing, turning to face him.

Though I didn’t want to tell him what exactly was bothering me, I had another set of questions for him—the set of questions that I am sure he wasn’t going to like at a time like this, but I needed the answers to.

"My mood will be depending on what you say next, Dylan. So choose your answer carefully," I warned.

He smiled at me with amusement dancing in his eyes.

I suppressed the urge to scoff at him, knowing all too well how this smile would disappear the moment I asked my question.

"If I ask you something, will you give me an honest answer?" I inquired, my gaze observing his body language.

He nodded without any hesitance.

I smiled this time.

’Valencia, why are you hell-bent on hurting yourself? You are already hurt because of what Alpha Maverick said. Why do you want to add more to your plate?’ Aurora asked, and I shrugged.

Why do I want to add more to my plate? Well, because I don’t want to feel sad at two different times. If I am feeling sad, let me feel sad at once.

I can’t waste too much of my time on this emotion.

"I will," Dylan voiced out his affirmation.

"Is that so? Then let me ask you something that you guys have been hiding from me for a long time...." I left the sentence trail, observing how his smile started to falter.

"Who are my parents, Dylan?" I asked.

Dylan chuckled awkwardly.

"What do you mean by who your parents are? Are you suffering from some kind of short memory loss from the accident? Don’t you know them? The beta couple of the Hazel Moon pack-" Dylan started.

I stepped ahead towards him, my emotions turning dark. This wasn’t funny to me.

"Does it look like I am in the mood to joke, Dylan?" I asked.

I waited for him to realize I wasn’t playing with this topic.

His expression started to somber.

"What do you mean, Valencia?" He asked. I sat back on the swing, facing him this time as it moved a little.

"I am cursed, aren’t I? Those are not my real parents," I whispered, not liking what I was saying either.

Dylan didn’t say anything for some time. He just kept looking at me before sighing.

"I have no idea what you are talking about," He was trying to dodge the question.

I didn’t want to say it so abruptly, but I was left with no choice; I couldn’t help it anymore.

"I talked to the Lycans, Dylan. They say my situation and everything around me perfectly matches the cursed baby. They knew about the bird around me, and they knew about my shape-shifting. But do you know what surprised me?" I asked him.

I tilted my head, looking him dead in the eyes to tell him how disappointed I was when I heard it.

"They told me the council would take their opinion if they could keep the lantern girl under their wings. Why? Because the lantern girl was the cursed one that the council head knew about. And probably... His son, too," I hissed the last words.

Dylan immediately stood before me. He sat on his ankles and held my hands between his hands.

"Valencia, whatever it is, let it stay in the dark. The more you discover, the more danger you’ll put yourself into. Some things are better kept hidden," Dylan said.

I scoffed at him.

Seriously? Was this his explanation of what I was asking?

They were hiding my identity from me, and all they had to say in that regard was that it was for the better.

The more I thought about it, the more anger clouded my mind.

"Why?" I asked Dylan, tears brimming my eyes.

"Why do I not deserve to know who my parents are? Why didn’t my parents keep me with them? Was it because I was cursed they gave me away? If you were in my place, wouldn’t you have tried to know where you belonged?" I asked Dylan.

Everything was starting to make sense.

Though Dylan wasn’t giving me a plausible answer, he didn’t deny the fact that I wasn’t cursed. After I asked him to be serious, he didn’t deny anything.

Was it the truth? Was everything I was suffering not even my destiny but was forced onto me? Why?

Where were my birth parents? I wanted to look for them and ask them what was so wrong with me that they didn’t want me. Being cursed wasn’t my fault. What made them think I was an abomination right from my birth?

As if Dylan knew about the turmoil inside my heart, he placed my hands on his forehead.

"Don’t be sad, baby. It’s not what you think," Dylan said.

I was about to jerk my hands away from his hold because his silence on the matter was hurting me even more. The fact that he knew something and was keeping it from me was hurting me.

But before I could do that... He said something that left me frozen in my place.

"The reason your parents couldn’t keep you with you at that time and had to give you up is because they died. They died protecting their pack and their newborn child," He said.

I paused, my eyes wide as I looked at him in shock.

"Now you would try to ask me what about the pack. Why didn’t they keep you with them? You had to be taken to the Hazel Moon pack, right? It was because the pack was destroyed overnight. The people... The people who came looking for you didn’t let anybody live in anger because they lost you," he said, and tears welled in my eyes.

Everybody died to protect me from the people who came looking for me. A shudder ran down my spine.
