VALENCIA’S POV

I opened the file that the prince’s secretary gave me. I read the first few lines that contained the questions regarding what I was doing with the mission and what I had done so far.

I rolled my eyes at the file before closing it and throwing it on the table again.

Prince Ethan looked at me with raised brows, probably not expecting this kind of behavior from someone like me, but he was surely getting on my nerves.

"Just ask the questions straightaway. Do you need to act so flamboyant with it when you know what you are doing is kind of illegal? You need records of it too?" I asked.

Yes. I was disgusted with the mission to some point. If it had been any other alpha, I might not have felt that weird or cared about what they wanted or how it would affect the alpha or his pack.

Something snapped inside me at his choice of words.

What did he call himself? My master? Since when did I allow someone to be my master?

I smiled at the man in front of me before shaking my head.

I dialed Jonathan’s number straightforwardly, not wanting to deal with Dylan either.

"What is it, sweetheart?" The council head asked as soon as he picked up the call.

"The mission with the spying on the Dark Callisto pack, please send another spy to do it. I am out of this mission," I said and stood from my place.

I was about to end the call when the council head asked me what was going on and I looked dead in the prince’s eyes.

"You out of all the people should know I despise it when someone calls themselves my master. I get paid for my hard work and my skills. Not because I am someone’s pet. You better choose the mission for me carefully," I said before ending the call.

"There I am not answerable to you anymore," I said to the Prince before bowing to him because of his status.

Turning around I was about to leave the room when the guards suddenly stopped me and I pulled out my daggers instinctively, ready to fight.

"I am sorry," I heard the familiar voice say and I froze in my place.

"Hmm?" I asked, unsure if he heard him right.

Did he just... I looked at the powerful man, who had a gentle smile on his face, and looked at him warily.

There was no way he was giving up so quickly. What was going on inside his head?

"I am sorry for acting that way. Please sit," He said. Not seeing anything weird with this aura or gaze, I say back before looking at him.

"You know you are the first person who dared to talk to me like this," The prince said and I looked at him, alarms going off in my head.

No. Please don’t let him think that just because I talked back to him, I am the perfect girl to calm his tantrum and take his shit. I have had this scenario a lot of times and I didn’t want a repeat of it with a prince for sure.

"Is that so? I am sure your lover must be like this too," I said and the guy smiled.

"Are you trying to ask me if I have a girl or not?" He asked.

Sarcastic much? I was about to tell him that it wasn’t my intention when he cleared his throat.

"Shall we eat something?" He asked, and I nodded before pressing the red button again to ask the management to bring the food inside that Carl must’ve asked them to prepare already.

The food came inside within five minutes and I watched the soldiers repeating the same mistake again, making me scoff.

Since I wasn’t working for them anymore, I didn’t have any reason to act so courteous towards them.

"I want to live," I said and the prince raised his brows at me, probably not understanding my sarcastic remark.

"Won’t I be a fool if I try to poison you with something that will kill you instantly? Your guards will kill me and you probably will be saved because you guys are always ready just like that," I paused before smirking at the prince.

"What are the chances that I added the kind of poison that will get into your system and eat you from inside slowly and slowly? Something that you won’t be able to diagnose until the damage is done beyond repair? Something that will give me enough time to run away too?" I asked.

The prince chuckled at my words before he dismissed the soldiers before they could complete their testing practice.

"You are a funny one," he said and I smiled back.

"I get that a lot," I said and he started eating his food.

I took the cutlery in my hand and was about to place some of the food on my plate when my phone vibrated.

Seeing it was Carl’s call, I knew that he was about to ask me what went wrong because the council head might have already informed him about my decision.

I excused myself, picking up the call, not moving from my seat though.

The aroma of the food was too much for me to ignore and I took a spoonful of pasta in my mouth.

"Hello," I said, ready to hear a series of scolding.

However, rather than that, what I got to hear was a question from him.

"Alexis, tell me what you did," He asked, and I furrowed my brows.

Was he asking about what I did with the mission?

"Well, he was being disrespectful, so I was left with no choice but-" I said, my gaze meeting with the Prince as I took another spoonful of pasta and stuffed it in my mouth.

I could hear Carl taking a deep breath.

"And just because he was being disrespectful, you went ahead and asked your people to burn the place? There were alphas and betas in there," Carl asked, and I choked on my food before furrowing my brows.

What the hell was he asking me? When did I ask someone to burn something or -

I froze in my place.

"What happened?" I asked, wiping my lips and Carl gulped.

"I don’t know either. I thought you were involved. That’s why I asked you if you did something so that we can come up with a defense from your side. However, if it wasn’t you, then who?" Carl said.

"But what exactly happened? What do- hey? Carl?" I looked at the ended call and gritted my teeth.

"Is everything alright?" The prince asked me, and I wanted to smile at him and tell him yes it was but then I saw his soldier stepping forward and whispering something in his ears.

I watched the prince’s expression turn grim before he raised his gaze and looked at me.

"So a fire broke out in the Hazel Moon pack, and for some reason, one of the main council members calls you to ask you if you were involved?" Prince Ethan asked me.

He probably heard the entire conversation that took place between Carl and I.

Carl seriously put me in a difficult position by acting like this. He knew I was meeting the prince. Must he ask me such questions at a time like this?

’Well, from what I have been seeing you are least scared of this prince and more concerned about whether you’ll get to finish this yummy pasta or not,’ Aurora rolled her eyes at me.
