Chapter 89: Who’s The Mistress?
Chapter 89: Who’s The Mistress?
A person’s memory was an amazing thing.
The longer time passed without interacting with someone, the more your brain builds up a whole storyline that never existed. For example, in his past life, when Brittney had been gone for weeks or months, all Dante could think about was how perfect she was and how much he loved her.
He fixated on her gestures and expressions until the persona she displayed became the only thing he could remember.
The times that she had slipped up were few and far in between, so Dante was able to explain those instances away. She had a hard day at work...she didn’t get enough sleep the night before... he wasn’t spoiling her enough.
Dante’s mind had made him so blind that he couldn’t see what was in front of him until moments before his death.
In this life, all he could think about was her flaws, her blood thirsty nature that seemed to be more of a beast than a human. He became obsessed with countering every plan HE thought she could come up with that she was the ultimate Boss Battle in his life.
And yet, they hadn’t been in the same room for more than 20 minutes, and all the masks she had previously worn completely disappeared.
Brittney wasn’t this great villain he had built her up to be. She wasn’t some sort of mastermind that no one could defeat. She was nothing more than a human... and like all humans, she was ruled by her emotions.
"I assure you," purred Dante, the smirk on his face carefully calculated. "Hattie isn’t a child."
"Hattie? What kind of name is Hattie?" sneered Brittney. Leaning forward, she slammed her hands against Dante’s desk, displaying a good amount of cleavage at the same time. "You are lying. You would never marry someone like that. Someone who wasn’t worthy of you."
"Oh?" replied Dante, leaning back in his chair. "I happen to disagree. I think that I am not worthy of her."
Smiling brightly, Dante watched in satisfaction as Brittney’s face continued to change colors between pink and red and purple.
For someone who thought the worst thing in her last life was to marry him, she really objected to the idea that someone else had taken her place.
Brittney stepped back, visibly pulling herself together. "I can give you a lot more than she ever could. Marry me, and I will put the entire world in your hands."
For a split second, Dante couldn’t respond. Just how conceited was Brittney to say something like that? Did she really think that she had the ability to give him something not even the demons could do?
Maybe Antoine had done him a solid by taking her away from him. He might have tried to end his own life if things had worked out differently.
"I already have the world in my hands, thank you very much. I am not interested in you. Not now, not ever. If you want to continue living here peacefully, then I suggest that you forget this meeting," said Dante, his face devoid of emotions as he stood up.
He was done with this conversation. Brittney wasn’t the Devil he had built up in his head, and now that he knew that, he had a lot more important things to worry about.
Like finding Hattie her hot chocolate.
As if his thoughts were able to conjure her, the door to his office opened, and Hattie came skipping inside, Tank at her back.
Brittney, hearing her, spun around, her face twisting in disgust as Hattie approached Dante and sat down in his chair.
"What are you doing here?" asked Dante, all thoughts of Brittney completely disappearing from his head as he stared at the little girl.
"You promised me hot chocolate," pouted the girl as she turned her blank eyes in his direction. The smile on her face could have made the Devil shiver in fear, but Brittney was clearly built differently.
"Were you raised in a barn?" demanded the other woman, crossing her arms in front of her and tapping her foot against the floor in irritation. "How dare you enter into Dante’s office without knocking?!?"
"Does the bayou count as a barn?" asked Hattie, turning her gaze away from Dante and toward Brittney. "’Cause I was raised dere. But if’s we’s gonna go by manners," the girl continued, letting the bayou accent become more and more dominant with every word she spoke. "Shouldda ya no be callin’ ’im ’Mr. Leone?’ Or’s I be guessin’ that ’Sir’ wouldda worked just as well."
Dante heard Tank softly chuckling somewhere behind him, but his brain was fixated on how the word ’Sir’ sounded coming out of her mouth.
The fucking minx knew exactly what she was doing.
"Don’t worry," chuckled Pride in his mind as he continued to stare at the woman in his seat. "She’s a lot older than she looks. I promise that everything is perfectly legal, no matter how taboo it feels."
"Dante and I go a long way back," snapped Brittney. It seemed to Dante that she had completely forgotten that they had never met in this life. It was so... disappointing to see it. All the hard work he put in just to be better than her, and this was what he got. "I’ve known him a lot longer than you have."
"Waz da phrase?" asked Hattie, tapping her chin with her index finger. "De one who doesnna ’ave ’is love is de mistress? Are yous sayin’ yous the mistress? ’Cause I really don’t share my toys all dat well."
The smile was completely gone from Hattie’s face as she hopped off the chair. It was almost like she could see everything in front of her, but Dante knew that wasn’t possible.
"Well?" she continued, leaning forward and bracing her palms against the desk. "’Cause we might be far from de bayou, but I’s sure as sure can be dat dere be a gator around ’ere somewhere."
"I am not arguing with a child over adult matters," sneered Brittney, coming to her full height. Holding her head high, she narrowed her eyes toward Hattie. "We’ll see who is still standing at the end of the day."
Spinning around, Brittney marched over to the door. Pulling it open, she was stopped short by Tank. "Good manners require asking if you could be dismissed," he chuckled, dipping his head down so Brittney could hear him. "And I promise you a slow death if anything happens to my Lamb."
