Chapter 88: Not Interested
Dante continued to stare into the mirror long after it had returned to normal.
Never had he thought he would be given a chance like this. Was this why he had been reborn? To truly become one of the most dominant forces in the world?
He thought back to what Pride had said about the power ranking of the world. Okay, so he might not be one of the most dominant forces in the world, but he definitely would for Country M. He would be able to carve out his own place in the world, and that was more than he thought he would get.
He still remembered Pride’s parting words...
"You have a deal," agreed Dante, straightening his spine. He didn’t know what was going to happen next, but he wanted to be prepared for anything.
"Good," announced Pride. "I’ll call you when we are ready."
Dante cocked his head to the side. "We aren’t doing this now?"
"We can’t. We only get one shot at this, and all seven of us have to be together. That means all seven on your side and on ours as well. We are missing one; you are missing six."
Well... that seemed a bit anti-climactic.
Here he was, ready to allow a demon to possess him, and the demon basically told him he needed to wash his hair first.
"Where do I find your other halves?" demanded Dante, no longer amused. He currently had a snake in the Garden of Eden, and while he was going to enjoy playing with her, he wouldn’t allow her to make any moves. Having a demon inside of him would give him a lot more control over everything.
"You don’t find them," grunted the demon sitting on the right. "They’ll find you. Look for Luca LeBlanc. When you find him, you’ll find the others."
-----
The mirror kicked him out without ceremony after the second demon had given him a name, and now Dante was left treading water.
The name... Luca LeBlanc... sounded familiar, but for the life of him, he couldn’t remember where he had heard it before.
If this was the old days, he could give Bishop an order and he’d have all of Luca’s information at his fingertips in less than an hour. So how the fuck was he supposed to find someone in this new world?
Letting out a long sigh, he turned around to face the room just as a gentle knock interrupted the silence.
She still knocked the same way, even after all these lifetimes.
Seriously, he was willing to let bygones be bygones. He would give her and her men shelter until the weather warmed up, and then he was planning on tossing her out on her ass. He was not going to restart the cycle of love and hatred all over again.
Not over someone who wasn’t worth it.
And yet, like a lamb to the slaughter, she approached him and knocked on HIS door.
"Come in," he grunted after a moment. Walking over to his desk, he sat down in his chair and waited for Brittney to appear.
"Are you busy?" came the soft voice. When she was like this, she sounded every inch the daycare teacher that she was. Any unsuspecting soul would be enamored by her after listening to her for a few minutes.
Dante didn’t bother to answer as he watched her head peak out from around the door, the rest of her body hidden. It would have been cute... in a past life, he would have been so happy to see her like this.
But now he understood that every minute movement that she did was calculated over and over again in order to be the most effective. She was like a beautiful snake that you never saw coming until you died.
When he didn’t answer, Brittney slowly walked away from the door, her head down as her hands were clenched in front of her. Coming to a stop on the other side of his desk, she continued to stand.
"What do you need?" growled Dante after a moment. The silence was just being drawn out as it was, and he really didn’t want to spend any more time with her than he absolutely had to.
"I want to thank you," murmured Brittney softly. Her perfect hair fell forward slightly, blocking her face from his sight. Even now, that ’accidental’ movement was perfectly planned.
Why couldn’t he have seen all this before? Why had he been so stupid to fall for it?
"You’re welcome. You can stay as long as it is snowing, but as soon as it warms up, you are out on your own," he announced, picking up a document in front of him. Hattie wanted hot chocolate, and he would do his best to track that down.
"I understand," Brittney continued, her voice hitching just a bit as if she was trying to keep the tears back. "It’s not easy to find the supplies for ten people."
"Nine," smirked Dante, looking up at the woman. "I killed one of your men, remember?"
Brittney turned pale for a second before frantically nodding her head. "I have nothing to give you in exchange for the supplies that my friends need..." Her voice trailed off as she reached down and started to lift her shirt, exposing her white skin.
"So, you are willing to trade yourself for them? Does Antoine know how far you are willing to go to keep him safe? I’m sure he’d be touched." Once again, Brittney’s face turned pale at Dante’s harsh words.
But this time, she wasn’t faking her reaction.
The two of them knew exactly how well Antoine would take the news of what Brittney was offering.
"I am willing," she said, breathing in deeply before letting it out in a rush. Straightening her spine, she looked over Dante’s shoulders like a martyr willing to die for those she loved.
"I am not," sneered Dante, letting the disgust he was feeling show on his face. "I am already married, and there is no way I am touching anyone else but her."
"Married?!?" screeched Brittney, dropping her shirt and the act all at the same time. "You have to be kidding me! Who did you marry? You can’t marry anyone!"
Dante raised an eyebrow as the woman continued to scream like a shrew. "I assure you. I can marry, and I have. You met her before, remember?"
Brittney blinked rapidly as if she was trying to figure out what he was talking about. "That child!!! You fucking married the child!!!!"
