Chapter 69: Good Luck

Salvatore stared out the window of their room, watching the falling snow. Grinding his teeth, he fought the need to shiver. It wasn’t that he was actually cold; it was more of a bone-deep conditioning of seeing snow fall.

"If she could tell the future, donna ya think she woulda seen dis comin’?" demanded Dimitri, coming to stand beside him. The temperature in the room was plummeting fast, and it wasn’t hard to see their breath in the air with every exhale.

Salvatore looked at Dimitri from the corner of his eyes but didn’t bother to say anything.

"I donna think she can see de future," grunted Ronan. "We’s donna feel de cold, but she’s built differently. If’n she knew dis was comin’, she’da planned for it."

"Or... maybe it’s us who’s built differently," murmured Désiré as he sat on his cot, counting each one of his bullets. He had the exact same number as the day before... 39... but that didn’t stop him from counting over and over again, hoping he got the number wrong.

Ever since Hattie had disappeared, it felt like an axe was hanging over their heads, and each day that passed without her around made the feeling worse.

"Whether we’s be warm or cold, don’t make no never mind to me," shrugged Luca, laying on his cot and looking up at the ceiling. "I’s just wonderin’ how the rest of the population is gonna survive."

"I fail to see how that’s on our heads," interjected Max. "That seems to be an Alicia problem... not ours. If she wants to be the grand ruler ’n everthin’, she needs to figure out a solution."

"Either way, it’s bullshit to just be sittin’ around on our asses, waitin’ for something to happen. And dat’s comin’ from me." Just as Ronan spoke, his face twisted in disgust, the sound of an alarm bell started ringing loudly just outside of their door.

"Zombies!" screamed one of the guards as he ran through the halls of the building, ringing the bell as fast as he could. "A horde of zombies at the front gate! Everyone downstairs, prepared to fight."

Luca raised an eyebrow as he turned his attention to Dimitri. "Now that is perfect timin’," he smiled, rolling out of bed and coming to his feet. "Imma guessin’ Christmas came early for all the good boys and girls."

"If zombies are your idea of a good time, we’s need to find yous a woman," grunted Désiré, rolling his eyes as he came to his feet. "Because to me, it seems to be more of an annoyance than a fais do-do."

Luca’s face twisted in unadulterated rage so fast that no one saw the hit coming. Désiré dropped to the floor, rubbing his jaw and poking at the cut in the corner of his lip as Luca continued to stare down at him. "I have a woman, thank you very much," he said, never breaking his stare as he raised his chin. "And if you ever suggest that anyone else but her is mine... I know the perfect place to bury you where you will never be found."

Désiré rose gracefully to his feet, his body having an unconscious way of moving that was almost inhuman. "Yer more than welcome to try, boyo," he smiled at Luca as he stepped into the other man’s space. "But yous ’n I both know better. We’s might all want a lick of the same lollypop, but only one of us is gettin’ ’er in the end. And we all know that I am de one the women like best."

Grabbing his bullets from off the cot, Désiré started loading his guns, once again counting the bullets in each magazine.

"Ever think she might not want someone who has been around the block more than a few times?" Even Dimitri’s accent disappeared as he went to stand beside Luca. "In fact, out of all of us, the Kitten has spent the least amount of time with you. Maybe you should start taking that to heart."

"Fightin’?" demanded Salvatore, turning around so that he could stare down at the five men in front of him. There were more important things to do at the moment than get into a pointless fight.

"Des got a point, mon frère," purred Max as he walked toward his friend. "If’n she only pick one of us..."

"Then we are all fucked because she officially has accepted her lapdog," growled a voice in Max’s head, causing him to cut off his sentence quickly.

Salvatore cocked his head to the side as he stared at Max, clearly getting the same information from his voice as Max just got.

"Lapdog?" growled Ronan, his face slowly transforming from indifference to fury. "Cher ’as a lapdog? Whys don’t I think we’s be talkin’ about an actual dog?"

"Probably because you are smarter than you let on," said the voice in Ronan’s head as the rest of the men turned silent. The annoying alarm had gone to disturb another floor, and silence fell on the room.

’And?’ sneered Ronan, his lips twisting as he licked his upper teeth. ’De pup can disappear easily enough in the bayou.’

"Not this one. He’s worse than a dog with a bone... and the stupid thing only understands one thing," continued the voice, the disgust in his voice easily to hear.

’Donna keep me in suspense ’ere,’ sneered Ronan, his muscles tightening as if he was facing the greatest enemy of all time.

"Protect," announced a voice that was clearly not his. Ronan turned to look at the other men, their eyes narrowing in the same glare.

"I donna sees that as a bad thing," shrugged Luca, strapping his guns to his body. "Especially if’n he protect ’er until we arrive."

"Awe... look at how cute and naive your meat sack is, Greed," purred a different voice. Suddenly, the room felt a lot smaller than it had before as if there were even more people inside of it.

"Fuck off, Pride. You’re meat sack is the one who fucked this up for everyone," snarled Greed.

Ronan looked at Salvatore; his eyebrows raised as if wondering if everyone else was hearing the same thing.

"The dog likes my meat sack," announced the other voice, full of confidence. "He won’t keep my meat sack away from our treasure."

"Nah," interjected another voice, sounding a lot like Ronan with his lazy drawl. "Your meat sack just tried to kill her. Good luck, brother. I have a feeling you are going to need it."
