Chapter 409: I Wasn’t Asking

Alicia pushed her way into Adam’s lab, not caring about his rules. "Adam!" she called out, looking around the massive room. There were about forty people bent over a long white table, looking into microscopes and writing down their findings.

The lab itself was a completely sterile room. No one from the outside world was supposed to be in it. There was a rumor that Adam even kept a secret chamber where he conducted his most important experiments.

However, the entire New Dawn Sanctuary belonged to Alicia, and so the labs were no different.

Ignoring the looks of the men and women as they whispered to each other, she walked over to the closest scientist and banged her hand on the table. "Where is Adam?"

The woman blinked, her thick glasses making her look a bit like an owl, but Alicia didn’t have time for her to put her brain back in her head. She had asked a question and she expected an answer.

Pushing the woman out of the way and onto the floor, Alicia looked at the scientist next to her. "Where is Adam?" she demanded again. However, like the first woman, this one didn’t respond either.

"Dr. Jardin is in the middle of something," announced one of the men, his face impassive even as he helped the first woman to her feet. "I’ll tell him that you were looking for him."

"Oh?" smiled Alicia, spinning around to look at the man. "If you can leave a message, then you can bring me to him. Where is he?"

The man remained silent for a moment before swinging his arm to the side as if to show her the way.

"Tavis," whispered the woman in his arms. "You know we can’t go there. He’ll kill you if you even so much as glance at that door."

"Then isn’t it a good thing that I won’t be glancing at it?" smirked Tavis as he helped his girlfriend to her seat. Adjusting her glasses so they were once again sitting properly on her nose, he gave her a little nose bump. "I just have to show her where it is and then quickly leave."

There was a chorus of soft snickers as the other scientists in the room heard what he was saying.

"Well?" demanded Alicia, already at the other end of the room. Her arms were crossed in front of her, and she was tapping her foot in impatience. "Unlike you, my time is important. Let’s hurry this thing up so that you can go back to doing whatever it is that you were doing."

Tavis smiled and patted Amy on the head before heading toward Alicia. He had absolutely no respect for the woman in front of him, but he knew enough to keep his mouth shut. She would get what was coming to her; there was no doubt about that.

Someone, somewhere, was going to kill her for something, and he’d be there to dissolve the body. Speaking of which, he needed to go back to his formula to see what he could tweak in order to make the acid work faster.

"Dr. Jardin is in his private lab," announced Tavis as he used his palm print to open the elevator. "I can take you to him, but I won’t be staying around. Like Dr. Jardin says, he pays us for results... not for interacting with others."

"Adam doesn’t pay you at all," sneered Alicia even as the elevator dropped down at a high speed. Holding her hands out to steady herself, she was pissed to see that the scientist knew what was coming and didn’t bother to warn her. "I am the one who pays you."

Tavis smiled. "If you say so."

Alicia’s eyes narrowed as she looked at the scanner in front of her. It was one that she hadn’t seen before, but she had the override keycard for every room in the Sanctuary. Taking it out of her pocket, she quickly opened the door.

"I told you I would kill you the next time you showed up here," growled a deep, almost inhuman voice in the darkness. Flicking on a light, Alicia’s eyes widened as she looked around. Except for a single desk with a computer and chair, the room was completely empty.

A door that she hadn’t noticed before swung opened and Adam came storming toward her.

"You," he growled, his eyes flashing bright for a second before he turned around and made sure that the door was shut behind him. "Don’t think Eve will be enough to keep you alive. What are you doing here?"

Alicia raised an eyebrow and scoffed at the man in front of her. "This is my house," she hissed at him. "I go where I want, when I want, and no one can stop me. If you want to keep living here, then I suggest that you start understanding your reality. Like you said... if you cross me, not even Eve will be enough to keep you alive."

"What do you want?" growled Adam, stepping forward. Alicia was right, to an extent, this was her house. He couldn’t be bothered running an entire human base. As far as he was concerned, it was nothing more than a waste of time and talent.

But Alicia seemed to have let that little bit of power so straight to her head.

"I want the Puppet formula," announced Alicia.

"It’s not perfected yet," replied Adam with a shake of his head. "There are still a few too many side effects for it to go into mass production."

"I don’t think you understand. I wasn’t asking."

"And I don’t think you understand when I say that I’m not giving it to you," shrugged Adam, even as he continued to approach the woman. "I will not let anything less than perfect bear my name."

Alicia smiled brightly, the tip of her tongue poking out between her teeth for a moment. "Aren’t you curious about how I got in here in the first place?" Holding up the keycard, she waved it in front of Adam. "This opens every last door in this place. Should I see if it also works on the room behind you? I’m sure that you wouldn’t want something like a fire to destroy whatever it is that you are trying to protect."

Adam returned her smile with one of his own... but his promised cruelty and blood. "Fine. You want the Puppet formula? I’ll give you as much as you can handle."
