Chapter 407: Horseshit

The guard narrowed his eyes at the observer before turning to look at the bleeding man again. "You’re just like them, aren’t you?" hissed the man, his eyes going wide as he growled at the guard. "You are making fun of me. Do you know who I am?!"

The man’s eyes were practically white, and his pupils were so small that they looked like pinpricks. If I looked at him closer, I could see an envy seed burrowing deep into his beating heart before spreading out into every limb like an infection.

Wrinkling my nose, I slowly blinked before turning my attention back to the guard. "I think he has amnesia," I whispered loudly, even as the man continued to scream. "Otherwise, how would he not know who he was?"

The guard absently nodded his head at my words, his eyes never leaving the unstable man in front of him.

"I am Alicia’s father! You dare treat me like this when it’s my daughter who rules the base?" spat the upset man. It was so amusing to watch him dig his own grave, but knowing that he was Alicia’s father... well, who was I to look a gift horse in the mouth?

"Oh," I mumbled, looking down at the ground. "Maybe you should let him into the base? Just until Alicia can confirm that this is her father. I wouldn’t want you in trouble or anything."

The guard let out a long sigh but signaled for two of his men to escort Buddy into the base. "In the very least, we’ll be able to test to see if it is a mutation of the zombie virus. I almost wish it were. I actually had fun fighting the zombies. But now that they have been almost eliminated... I shouldn’t complain."

I smile up at the guard, a look of perfect innocence that only a small child or a psychopath could display. "It’s okay," I assured him. "It can be our secret."

The man looked down at me indulgently before turning to Tank. Narrowing his eyes, he focused on where Tank was bleeding. "We’d better take you in, too. Just in case the disease could be spread by blood."

Tank shrugged his shoulders, but didn’t bother to say anything.

"I’m with him," I chirped up, reaching out to pinch Tank’s shirt. "Is it possible to stay with him? I’d be too scared to be by myself."

The guard suck in a breath before letting it out slowly. "I don’t think you should take the chance. If this is a zombie thing, then your big brother might not be able to stop himself from hurting you. I’ll let you enter the Sanctuary with him, but we’ll keep you two in separate rooms."

"But big brother would rather hurt himself before hurting me," I assured him, my eyes bright and sparkling. "Pretty please with a cherry on top?" I begged. "Let me stay with my big brother."

"You really are milking this, aren’t you?" grumbled Tank as he lifted me up in his arms and followed behind the other guards.

"If I have a Daddy, why can’t I have a big brother?" I replied with a shrug of my shoulders. "I kind of like it."

"Because what I want to do to you is illegal in all 51 Regions if I am your big brother," growled Tank into my ear. His eyes flashed bright orange for a second before he got himself under control.

"Really?" I asked, cocking my head to the side.

Salvatore taught me that sex could be fun, and so had Ronan... but I didn’t think that Tank felt that way, too.

"You want me like that?"

Tank stumbled over his own feet for a split second before continuing forward. "Here was me thinking that I was being obvious," he murmured under his breath before taking in a deep breath. "Yes, little lamb. I want you like that more than I want my next breath. But I refuse to do anything that might make you uncomfortable. So, until you ask for it, I’ll stay by your side as a good puppy, okay?"

Swallowing hard, I nodded my head. All the possibilities of what could happen next appeared in my head, but he was right. It was much different thinking about it than actually doing it. Plus, not once had I really initiated anything.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed myself, and I wanted it. I just didn’t initiate it.

"Okay," I squeaked out just as we walked through a side gate that hadn’t been there the first time either.

"This is our quarantine section," explained the guard as he looked at my face. "We had an incident a few weeks ago, and now everyone is going into quarantine for 24 hours before being allowed into the main Sanctuary."

"Incident?" growled Tank, pulling me in closer. If we hadn’t actually been in the Sanctuary for the incident, I would have thought that Tank didn’t know anything about it. "Is it safe for her to be here? If it’s not safe, we’ll take our chances outside. Like you said, there haven’t been any zombie sightings for a while."

"A few contaminated people were able to enter the place thanks to bribing the guards and doctors. They mutated into zombies and started to destroy the Sanctuary. We believe that it was actually a group of rebels, led by a man named Bishop, who purposefully exposed themselves to the zombie virus."

"Why would they do that?" I asked. That wasn’t what happened at all, but it was interesting just how people’s minds were able to be manipulated by a Spirit user. I mean... chef’s kiss.

The guard shrugged as he led us down a long hallway, past the ’crazy’ man, and toward the back. "Rumors say that they were a Zombies First movement that wanted to promote the rights of zombies to feed on the living. Some people even suggested that humans should build farms for ’livestock’ so that the zombies didn’t have to starve."

"What type of livestock?" demanded Tank. The look of confusion on his face was completely real, and even I couldn’t quite believe that humans had gone this far. I mean, we went from killing them the second we saw them to wanting to provide meals!?

"Humans," grunted the guard. "Human run farms that provide humans to zombies."

Well now, that was the biggest load of horseshit that I had ever heard.
