Chapter 397: Three Wishes

"That’s the funny thing about chains," I said absently as I looked at the bindings around my wrists and ankles. "They always tend to skew someone’s perspective."

"Shut up," sneered Colt, smacking me across the face again. "I didn’t tell you that you could speak. My first wish is that the jungle would disappear. I don’t want to be here anymore."

"Okay," I shrugged, not at all concerned. "But those are two wishes. Think carefully before you give me your wish again. I wouldn’t want to get it wrong and have you blame me for it. After all, you could end up back on a pirate ship."

It almost amused me how he was just digging himself deeper and deeper into a hole, thinking that he was actually giving himself a way out.

"I don’t want to be here anymore," spat Colt, his words crystal clear. "I am sick and tired of everything trying to kill us. I wish that Sadie, the survivors, and I were someplace safe that we don’t have to worry about the fucking bugs and plants trying to eat us."

"Deal approved," I smiled at him, even as the chains around me crumbled to dust. Coming to my feet, I smiled at his wide-eyed look.

"There is no deal," he said, taking a step back for every step I took forward. "It is just you granting my wish."

"Haven’t you learned that nothing is free in this world?" I asked, cocking my head to the side as I straightened my dress. At least the fucker hadn’t put me in something completely inappropriate when he pulled me into his dream.

"Here’s another one you might know: if it’s too good to be true, chances are it is," I continued, pulling my throne out of the dreamscape. Walking over to the towering structure of bones and metal, I sat down comfortably. "How about this one? Be careful what you wish for... You just might get it."

Colt’s mouth was pressed into a thin line as he looked like he wanted to kill me. But that was fine. I was feeling the same way... I just wanted to play with my food first.

"You made three wishes in one," I said with a bright smile on my face. Holding up my hand, I lifted my index finger. "One: you don’t want to be here anymore. Granted. In exchange for your strength, you no longer have to be in this dream with me. I mean, it might have been easier if you just woke up on your own, but hey... It’s your wish."

Colt opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, I held up a second finger. "Two: you are sick and tired of everything trying to kill you. In exchange for your health, I’ll make sure that nothing tries to kill you anymore. Although you should be grateful that you didn’t wish for immortality. I’m pretty sure that the last guy who did is currently begging for death. Or maybe it was the time before that?"

Shaking my head, unable to keep up with each and every wish at this point, I held up a third finger. "Wish number three is for you, Sadie, and all the survivors to go to some place safe where the plants and bugs don’t try to eat you. In exchange for your voice, I will send you and everyone in your party to a place that is safe from plants and bugs."

"There was no—" started Colt. However, before he could finish his sentence, his voice cut out. Gripping his throat, he tried to say a few words, but while his mouth continued to move, not a single sound came out.

Ah... silence really was golden.

"A piece of advice?" I offered, coming to my feet. Stepping down from my throne, I allowed it to vanish behind me. "You don’t summon the Devil; she arrives when she is ready. Thanks for freeing up my time tomorrow. I was worried that I would have to search the entire jungle before I found you. You really are sweet and considerate when you want to be, huh?"

The expression on Colt’s face alternated between fear and fury as he continued to grip his throat. "Toodaloo," I waved at him before snapping my fingers and flinging him out of the dreamscape. This was perfect. I dealt with the last obstacle keeping us here, and I didn’t even have to get out of bed.

Ronan would be so proud of me.

Another snap of my fingers, and I was back in bed where I was supposed to be. Looking around, I saw that everyone was fast asleep. Letting out a big yawn, I closed my eyes and joined them.

Tomorrow was another day. Might as well rest up before it comes.

The eerie cry of wolves woke him up long before the bitter kiss of cold managed to penetrate his brain. Cold like this wasn’t a normal cold; it burned every inch of skin that came into contact with it.

"Colt," whimpered Sadie, her arms wrapped around her body as she fought to keep herself warm. "Where are we?"

Steam rose with each breath she took before quickly freezing again. Even the limited heat from her body rose like clouds before quickly crashing down to the ground. Sitting up, Colt looked around.

Everywhere he looked, it was white. He couldn’t see a single building or tree, nothing that gave away their location. Even the moon and the stars were different from what he was used to. Opening his mouth to reply, he quickly snapped it shut again before erupting in a violent coughing fit.

The moment he had taken a breath with his mouth open, cold air rushed down his throat and lungs, making it almost impossible to breathe.

The rest of the survivors around him weren’t in much better condition. Most of them were turning blue and purple as frostbite set into their skin and extremities. One woman cried out as her fingers, comply frozen, dropped off into the snowy ground.

"I don’t understand," gasped Sadie, her eyes wide even as her tears froze to her skin. "Weren’t we just in the jungle? Where is the jungle? I want the jungle back!"

Thinking about his dream, Colt once again looked around before scoffing to himself. Right. In this frozen wasteland, they were definitely safe from plants and bugs that were trying to eat them. He guessed he got his wish after all.

In under half an hour, Colt, Sadie, and the rest of the survivors fell asleep, thanks to the cold, never to awaken again.
