Chapter 390: The Buffet
Chapter 390: The Buffet
Another thundering step sounded, followed by the unmistakable cracking of a massive tree trunk giving way.
A massive head, the size of a truck, swung toward me. The small yellow eyes seemed to focus more on me than anything else, like it was trying to decide if I was a snack or something worth worshiping.
Its snout was long and scarred, lips curled back in a permanent snarl that showed rows of teeth like railroad spikes. Not white, not clean, but old and cracked and still somehow sharp enough to split steel.
Breath puffed from its nostrils like steam off a boiling pot, and its whole body trembled with a low, vibrating growl that made the wooden platform beneath my feet rattle.
And yet... I didn’t flinch. I tilted my head.
It tilted its head back.
"Don’t worry," I whispered to the creature, my eyes bright as I continued to study the massive thing. "Daddy already said that you could be my pet."
I felt more than saw everyone turning to look at Chang Xuefeng as I reached out my hand to the dinosaur, which was the size of the tallest tree. "What is it?" I continued, my fingers burning to be able to pet it.
"Tyrannosaurus Rex," announced Chang Xuefeng, that indulgent tone in his voice that I was starting to love.
"Rexy," I nodded in agreement. "Who’s a good boy?" I purred.
The dinosaur roared his answered as he pushed forward, letting me see the rest of his body. "Tink is going to love him," I nodded, completely forgetting the raptors and villagers and the fight to the death that was about to start.
As far as I was concerned, the villagers brought everything on themselves. If you were too stupid to live, you might as well be food for something smarter.
A raptor screeched on the next platform over, its claws gripping the edge of a hut as a woman screamed. Suddenly, the entire bridge beneath them snapped without warning.
Ronan scooped me into his arms just as the wooden boards gave way beneath our feet. The villagers still scrambling across didn’t stand a chance, and the entire platform crashed into the underbrush below.
The raptor who had caused the destruction simply stood up from its fall and shook its head before snapping at the nearest human. The rest of the pack that weren’t in the trees quickly followed suit, gorging on both the living and the dead without thought.
The jungle exploded into chaos as vines shot out of the trees around us, wrapping around the villagers who had tried to run. Dangling the humans, the vines offered them to the raptors and Rexy.
Terrified, some of the remaining villagers leapt from the trees, but couldn’t make the landing. Others, like Selene and Rhys, fought, their arrows raining down on the poor raptors on the ground. But I didn’t know if it was the arrows or the raptor’s tough skin, but none of the projectiles did any damage.
"Coffee?" offered Luca, holding out yet another cup to me. I really had no idea where the others were. I couldn’t remember if I had finished them or where I had put them, and I really didn’t care. Tossing my lollipop stick to the side, I took the offering.
"Thanks," I smiled up at him. "You’re the best."
"I’m the one letting you have the T-Rex as a pet," reminded Chang Xuefeng, plucking the mug of coffee out of my hands. "Doesn’t that count for anything?"
"It counts for a lot," I assured him, grabbing my coffee back. "But you need to remember that I don’t play favorites. Just like Luca is the best for getting me hot coffee, you are the best for getting me a pet. Dante is the best for leading us, so I don’t have to. Ronan is the best to take naps with. Salvatore is the best at..." I paused, thinking of Salvatore’s tongue.
"It doesn’t matter," I continued as yet another scream echoed around us. "You all have your good points."
Ronan nodded his head and picked me up. "As long as ya remember dat I’m your favorite, everythin’ is perfect," he assured me. "Ready ta leave now?"
"No," I said, taking another sip of coffee and watching as a T-rex snapped at one of the offered humans. The man wasn’t even enough to be a toothpick to the dinosaur, and I couldn’t help but shake my head. Feeding him was going to take some trial and error, but I was up for it.
I pointed behind us toward the Seer’s hut, where Carter was crawling, trying to escape now that everyone was otherwise occupied.
"I want to watch him die first."
Dante nodded his head even as a vine wrapped the wannabe Seer up like a pig in a blanket. The Seer squealed, begging for us to save him, but it was too little, too late.
"Please," begged the Seer, even as his fingernails tore off as he tried to claw at the wooden platform. "Save me. Fucking hell, I wish I was never here in the first place."
The men around me stilled, hearing the magic word. However, I was completely indifferent. That was the thing that no one seemed to have realized yet. Although truth be told, it wasn’t until this very minute that I realized it myself.
Just because a human made a wish, it didn’t mean that I had to grant it. The Sins were already here; the contract that we had signed had long been fulfilled. I didn’t have to do a damn thing I didn’t want to do.
"Should we do something?" Désiré asked lazily, his eyes focusing on the man still screaming as the vine continued to pull him to the edge. "Like... intervene? He made a wish, after all."
Taking a sip of coffee, I watched in amusement as the vine finally managed to pull him off the side and toward Rexy. "We are doing something," I assured him. "We’re watching."
A hut burst into flames as someone knocked over a torch in their panic. The smoke coiled into the canopy, a signal to every predator in the jungle that dinner was being served.
"This isn’t a village anymore," Dante said softly. "It’s a buffet."
"Bon appétit," I replied with a smile.
That day, the jungle ate well.
