Chapter 389: Cute Little Pets

Leave it to the humans to think that the easy way out of everything, to keep the curtain up and everything perfect, was to kill the one who introduced reality into their lives.

The men stepped forward, acting like a physical shield between me and the malnourished villagers. However, the humans weren’t a threat, no matter how much they might have thought differently.

"Stay behind us," said Désiré, his voice soft and caring even as a bright flame lit up his hand. "Dey canna get through us."

"They don’t need to," I replied with a shrug. Pointing out the window, a bright smile appeared on my face. The jungle itself seemed to be holding its breath for some reason, and I could only guess it was because my new pets had finally found us.

Tank, lifting an eyebrow, walked over to where I was pointing and looked down. "I’m guessing you had something to do with that?" he chuckled softly.

"I was promised pets," I answered, refusing to give in. If I couldn’t have the dolphins, I was going to damn well get some raptors. They were so cute and cuddly, why couldn’t I have some and bring them back to O City with me?

Not to mention, they followed my blood to the village... that made them mine.

Slipping around Désiré, I joined Tank by the window. Below the tree branches and the rope bridges. Below the vines and the huts, the canopy floor was thick with shadows.

They seemed so alive that they were practically breathing, and I had to hold back my giggle as I saw the first pair of amber eyes.

One by one, they emerged from the underbrush, their long tails swaying behind them as their talons gleamed like knives in the half-light. They moved with slow, deliberate grace, not stalking their prey, but studying the village above like they were solving a puzzle.

And then one of them looked up.

Straight at us.

Straight at me.

From the open window of the Seer’s hut, I leaned just slightly forward, peering down through the vines. "Well," I muttered, pulling out a lollipop from my space and unwrapping it. Sticking it in my mouth, I cocked my head to the side, mirroring the raptor’s movements. "This is going to be fun."

The raptor tilted its head one way, then the other. And then, impossibly, it smiled.

An intelligent kind of grin, one that said, ’We see you.’ And just like before, I returned his grin with one of my own. I had 150 hellhounds waiting for me somewhere in this realm, and now I would have my own pack of raptors.

Narrowing my eyes, I thought about what else I could take back to Country M with me when I left. As long as it was on or around the house, it shouldn’t be a problem. Tink seemed to move just fine with us.

As I was left dreaming, the raptor had figured out a solution to a problem only it knew.

Hearing a startled gasp, I saw that Tank and I weren’t the only ones at the window, and I shifted to get out of the way. Rushing toward the door and the platform the Seer’s hut was built on, I leaned over the railing, wanting to see what else my new pets could do.

The raptors didn’t disappoint. The moment they moved, it was with determination and intelligence that I would have never thought them capable of.

Bracing his legs, the alpha crouched down low before leaping high up in the air. His front arms extended, and he reached for the same rope ladder that I had climbed not that long ago.

The same one that was probably saturated in my blood.

The raptor’s claws sank into the rope ladder dangling beneath the village. The wooden rungs bent and twisted under its weight, but the creature climbed anyway. Slowly. Steadily. A predator out of nightmares, solving the first line of defense that had once protected the villagers.

Behind it, more raptors moved. Some leapt into trees, talons biting into bark. Others began clawing at the vines and netting that supported the lower platforms.

"They’re climbing," whispered someone.

A villager. Not one of us. His voice was full of disbelief.

"They can’t do that," he continued, shaking his head over and over again. "They can’t climb. They can’t climb."

But they could.

And better than that, they were.

Screams erupted across the bridges as panicked villagers bolted out of huts, tripping over each other as they scrambled away from the edges. Some grabbed crude spears, machetes, clubs—useless things, but they clung to them like lifelines, while others disappeared into the same hut, hiding together from the predators.

It was a great idea. There was nothing that made a hunter more annoyed than having to go to multiple locations to find their prey. At least these humans were considerate enough to all be in the same spot.

Below, the raptors hissed, their strange chirps morphing into sharp calls.

One lifted its head and gave a shriek so high and piercing it made the hairs on my arms stand up.

And then...

The trees shook with the impact of whatever it was hitting the earth. It sounded like a landslide or some other force of nature as it continued to come closer.

The raptor froze where they were, clinging to trees or rope ladders as if waiting for something. And then we heard it. The answering roar. Low and guttural. A sound that didn’t belong to anything human.

The villagers froze.

Rhys stepped in front of Selene instinctively, his knives ready, eyes wide.

"What de hell is that?" asked Ronan, stepping beside me. But he didn’t sound scared. He sounded curious.

Another roar—closer now. So loud it shook birds loose from the canopy and sent them wheeling into the sky.

"That," said Luca calmly, drawing a blade from his belt, "is not our problem."

"It will be," Dante added, "if we stay."

I turned to the villagers still frozen in place, clutching at their false god’s hut like it could protect them. Unable to do anything but shake my head, I turned my attention back to Dante. "I want it. It will make a good friend for Tink."

Chang Xuefeng chuckled and stroked my cheek. "Whatever you want," he assured me.

This was perfect. I was kidnapped and brought to the village, but at least I got a bunch of cute pets out of it.

"Love you, too, Daddy," I smiled up at him as I kissed his cheek. "But let’s let the villagers have some fun first, okay?"
