Chapter 386: Life In The Apocalypse

Chapter 386: Life In The Apocalypse

It was probably a good thing that I had so much coffee in me; it almost made the walk to our death bearable.

"Daddy," I whined as I ’stumbled’ over a vine. "My feet hurt."

"Suck it up, Princess," said Selene, tightening the knife on my neck slightly. She had traded out the bow and arrow for a very sharp knife. It had managed to cut me a few times now. Never deep enough to cause any sort of damage, but deep enough to draw blood.

And if you thought my men were ferial when Selene first pointed an arrow at me, it was nothing compared to when they could smell my blood.

But it wasn’t just the guys that were starting to become more unhinged, I could have sworn that even the jungle itself was pissed off.

"I don’t want to suck it up," I replied, cocking my head to the side and getting another nick for my troubles. This one was a bit deeper, and the blood was now dripping onto the path, leaving a trail behind us. "I want to be carried. I want Daddy to carry me."

"Ask me if I care about what you want," smirked Selene as she hovered behind me. She was about two feet taller than me, thanks to her weird shoes, and it led to very awkward angles on both our ends. I could barely see the path in front of me, my chin was so far up thanks to her knife, and she was hunched over, affecting her center of gravity.

"Yeah," I agreed, absently nodding my head until I felt yet another cut. "You probably don’t. But if you aren’t careful, you are going to take my head long before we even get to wherever we are going. Then what are you going to do for your pound of flesh? Offer yourself up?"

"You carry her," snarled Selene as she pointed to Chang Xuefeng. He already had two men on either side of him, since he wasn’t overly happy about the whole kidnapping thing. The back fist he did to the first man who tried to tie him up was nothing short of a thing of beauty.

I almost wish I had a picture or video of the blood spraying out of his mouth. Chef’s kiss. It really was spectacular.

Muttering under his breath, Chang Xuefeng stalked toward me and swept me into his arms. "Salvatore," he hissed, seeing the multiple shallow cuts on my neck.

Salvatore shook off the man trying to hold him back and rushed over, his eyes full of concern. "Mine," he hissed, his eyes flashing purpled even as his healing mist engulfed my body. "They are trying to covet what’s mine."

"Join the club," replied Luca, stiffly moving his head from side to side. "I think we are going to need to teach them a lesson on coveting what is not theirs."

"No lessons," I yawned, resting my head against Daddy’s shoulder. "Since they want to play with us, then it’s only polite that we play with them."

Fuck their gods taking their pound of flesh. If anyone deserved it, it was me. They messed with my day with the guys, and I wasn’t going to take that lying down. If Selene wanted to survive what was going to come next, she needed to repent.

"Almost there," Selene said, breaking me out of my thoughts.

"What?" murmured Ronan, his jaw practically dislocating as he yawned. "No blindfolds dis time?"

"It doesn’t matter," shrugged Rhys. He had a knife in each hand as he walked beside Dimitri, thinking that Dimitri was the biggest threat of all of us. "You aren’t ever going to be able to leave."

Letting out a tsking sound, I couldn’t help but look at the man with disappointed. "Who said anything about us leaving? After all, you’ve gone through all this trouble getting us here. Wouldn’t you be upset if we just up and left?"

The Devil was easy to invite, but getting rid of her? Well, good luck with that.

The trees above us shifted, and I noticed rope bridges connecting the higher branches, with small, woven huts nestled in the thick canopies. A jungle Ewok village, if the Ewoks had decided to sacrifice tourists instead of hosting them for dinner.

Looking at the rope ladder in front of us, I couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. "What?" I demanded, pouting a bit. "No elevators? Just how do you think we are going to get up there using that?"

"Just like the rest of us had to, Princess," replied Selene as one of the members of her team started going up. His face was nothing more than a mass of scars, thanks to some very wicked-looking claws, but his ice blue eyes were like beacons in the darkness as he looked at me for the first time since they came upon us.

He didn’t belong to Selene; she didn’t deserve a man like that taking orders from her. For a brief second, I wondered if he had officially sealed his fate or if there was another option open to him.

Shaking my head, I closed my eyes as Daddy, still holding me, started to climb up the tree, using the fucking rope ladders.

When we finally stepped onto the first bridge, I let out the breath of air that I was holding.

"Charming," Dante murmured. "All it’s missing is a guillotine and a bloodstained altar."

"I could probably throw one together," offered Beau cheerfully as he quickly made his way up to where we were standing on the bridge.

"Don’t tempt me with a good time," I said under my breath. The people looking at us fearfully were so pitiful that I almost felt sorry for them. I didn’t know what it was like to live life in the apocalypse the way they did.

They probably all had amazing jobs, families, and loved ones. The worst thing they ever experienced was the death of a family member or something. But now, here in the jungle, they were barely hanging on.

I could see the gaunt look on a few women, their eyes almost hollow, as if they had completely given up on life. The men weren’t much better, but like in any place, this one clearly came with a pecking order.

And Selene and her men were on top.

"Scared?" murmured Selene, bending down until she could whisper in my ear. I hadn’t even heard her approach; she was that quiet.

"No," I answered with a shake of my head. "Just wondering how many heads I was going to add to the display case."
