Chapter 385: The Same Games
It was just supposed to be a quick walk, a way to take a break and get some fresh air. It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this.
Père had been driving me crazy. He kept to his word and was silent the entire time, but every last one of my nerves was focused on him, waiting for him to strike. The fact that he was just a head without a body and therefore completely incapable of hurting me was besides the point.
I was strung up and strung out, and no amount of banana-flavored lollypops was going to make me any calmer.
"Let’s go for a walk," suggested Tank, his voice soft and soothing. But even that familiar voice made me flinch like I was expecting an attack. Seeing my reaction, all of the guys had an almost visceral reaction.
"Sorry," I sighed, closing my eyes. I loved the head, I really did. And if it were anyone else’s head, I probably wouldn’t be like this, but it wasn’t anyone else’s. "I didn’t mean that."
"No," agreed Chang Xuefeng as he walked over to me. Cupping my cheek in his palm, he gently kissed me on the forehead before turning his attention to the trophy case. "And that is okay. It’s an honest reaction based on your life. If you were able to suppress it, then I would be even more worried. The fact that you are reacting is that you felt safe around us. And we are going to make it safe for you again."
Walking over to where Père’s head was, looking at him with fear on his face, Chang Xuefeng opened the case and touched Père’s forehead. After a minute, he looked at me over his shoulder. "The demon is dead," he announced, stepping back so I could actually see the head.
Its eyes were closed, and I could no longer feel the slime oozing off of it.
"Do you want to keep it or throw it out?" continued my Angel as if he were making polite conversation.
"Father Khaos went through a lot of trouble to give me the head," I replied, with a shake of my head. "I’ll keep it for right now."
-----
After that whole thing, Tank pushed the whole walking thing, and I didn’t know if he wanted to go for a walk or if he just wanted to get me out of the house.
Either way, the ten of us found ourselves walking over the bridge and into the primal jungle.
The air was nice, the cool breeze making me feel like the slime that Père had covered me with was being brushed away. The men were sweating, their hair almost plastered to their heads, but not a drop of humidity touched me.
The men surrounded me in a lazy half-circle with Salvatore to my left and Luca to my right. Dante, Tank, and Chang Xuefeng were walking in front of us, setting a slow pace, and Dimitri, Ronan, Beau, and Désiré brought up the rear. With everyone so close, I couldn’t help but relax all that much more.
From his space, Luca brought out a cup of coffee and a cupcake, holding them out like an offering to me. Plucking the coffee out of his hands, not caring that I was now on number five, I took a big sip.
"We aren’t alone," muttered Tank, his voice so soft that I could barely hear it.
Nodding my head, I hummed in agreement. Was it really too much to give me just one day to myself? It wasn’t like I was an extrovert. I didn’t thrive around people... so why couldn’t people just leave me alone?
Present company excluded, of course.
"If you want her to live, I’d put the weapons down," called out a very familiar female voice. Taking another sip of coffee, I looked over the rim of the mug and toward where the sound was coming from.
"If you want to live," I started, exchanging the empty mug for the cupcake. "Then I’d turn around and pretend like you never saw us."
"Children should be seen and not heard," hissed Selene as she stepped onto the path beside Luca. She was holding a bow and arrow, the weapon so primitive that I couldn’t help but scoff. It wasn’t that I looked down on her skill. I am sure that she was very good at what she did.
But even if she had a rocket launcher, it wouldn’t be enough to kill the ten of us.
It was like a child trying to take out a Tank with nothing more than a slingshot.
*See what I did there? I really impress myself sometimes.*
"And bitches should be in kennels in case they try to bite someone they shouldn’t," I replied. Unwrapping the bottom of my cupcake, I separated the bottom half and placed it on top of the frosting, creating a little sandwich.
"We need sacrifices for the jungle gods," said Selene, her arm not wavering an inch as she aimed the arrow at my head. "And you all will work perfectly."
"Your gods are dead," said Dante, narrowing his eyes at the men in front of him.
While Selene had my undivided attention, ish, the rest of her men had managed to surround us.
"Impossible," replied Selene, her voice holding onto her conviction. "Nothing can kill a god. And they want their pound of flesh."
"Okay," I shrugged, wiping my sticky fingers on my dress. "Let’s go."
"Sugar bear," murmured Beau, reaching out to touch me. "You know we don’t have to. We don’t owe them anything. Might as well kill them now and let the jungle eat."
Selene’s men shifted, their unease apparent. I guess we weren’t acting like how they thought we should. Were they expecting us to cry, to beg? When did crying and begging do anything?
Besides, I woke up and chose violence today. And there was no way I was going to disappoint myself.
"If they want to have us over for a playdate, why not?" I said at last, my eyes cutting to Selene’s. "Let’s see if we all like to play the same games."
