Chapter 376: First And Foremost Hattie’s

Dimitri was pissed; there was no other word for it. Walking away from the house, from Hattie when they were in a strange place, with danger all around, was nothing short of painful.

The only saving grace was that he knew the house would protect her when he wasn’t there. But even that was cold consolation. No one could protect the Devil better than Wrath could.

"Then you and I need to get on the same page," sneered Wrath inside Dimitri’s head. "You still haven’t offered up our soul yet. You still don’t understand me yet."

"Neither ’ave you," sneered Dimitri. It wasn’t just the human who could offer up their soul; the demon could do it just as well.

"You are a blade forged in fire," said Wrath, his presence pushing through Dimitri’s resistance. Looking through the eyes of the Sin, the jungle around them appeared to be completely different.

Gone was the darkness, the bright green of the plants. Gone was everything that the man had expected. And in its place were the very creatures who had been stalking them.

"De turkey is gonna kill us?" asked Dimitri, blinking rapidly as he looked at the creatures on either side of his path. Sure, he had seen enough movies to recognize a velociraptor when he saw one. But instead of the six-foot ones that were popularized, these were the size of a turkey.

"See, that’s your problem," sighed Wrath, wanting to smack the human. "You just see the outside and dismiss it. You don’t see the threat it poses."

"It’s a turkey," grumbled Dimitri. Sure, there was about 50 of them in total, but what could the little things do to him? "Think Hattie would like it roasted?" he continued, cocking his head to the side as he created a ball of molten metal in his hands.

"Okay," grumbled Wrath, trying a new approach. "Hattie is small and unassuming. Do you think she is harmless?"

"Dat girl could take on a gator and win," replied Dimitri without thinking.

"Exactly," smiled Wrath, happy he was finally getting somewhere. "So, if she is so strong, why does she need you?"

Dimitri froze, the smile on his face completely disappearing as the fucking Sin inside of him poked at his sore spot. Flicking his wrist, he let the metal encase each of the 50 raptors, the heat burning them to death before cooling off enough to touch.

"Spit it out," said Dimitri, his accent vanishing as he straightened his spine. He looked around, trying to spot some other unsuspecting victim, but if there was anyone else around, they had long since disappeared.

"Wrath doesn’t always burn hot," said Wrath, proud of the change in Dimitri. He had always had this part inside of him; it was one of the reasons why Wrath was attracted to the human meat sack in the first place. However, the human had always been scared of this part.

He feared what he was capable of, and that was unacceptable.

"You can fight," continued Wrath, knowing that the meat sack was finally taking him seriously. "You are one of the best fighters of the ten. But that isn’t enough."

Dimitri didn’t bother to respond. He simply continued walking along the path in front of him as everything avoided him. "Then what is?"

"Wrath is about vengeance, retribution, a slow and silent killer that doesn’t strike until years later if need be. Think of the part of you that terrifies you. The part that demands justice for Hattie. The one that calls for the death of her enemies. The part of you where you plotted and planned. That is Wrath. That flame that can both burn hot and be ice cold all at the same time."

Dimitri pulled out the knife he was never without and started cleaning under his nails. "Go on."

"There is no part of you that scared Hattie," sighed Wrath, wishing he had a cast iron skillet that he could use to knock some sense in the human. But since that would hurt him, too, he quickly dismissed that idea. "Stop holding back, or I will find someone else who can give Hattie everything that she needs and deserves."

"Someone like me?" asked a figure as he dropped from the canopy. "I’d love the chance to prove my worth."

Dimitri scoffed, "Keep dreamin’," he said, his accent as thick as anything. He understood what Wrath was telling him, and for the most part, he agreed with it. But that didn’t mean he needed to announce it to the world.

"You’re the brainless one, right?" continued the man as he rose to his feet. At seven feet tall, he looked like a long-lost god. "Nothing but fire and fists, am I right?"

Cracking his neck from side to side, Dimitri didn’t bother to say anything, simply lunged forward with his empty hand. Reaching the god, he smiled softly as he ripped through the man’s chest and wrapped his hand around the beating heart.

Pulling back his hand, Dimitri looked down at the man on his knees in front of him. His face was pale, no longer the bronze complexion he first had. "I don’t understand," gasped the god, looking at the heart in Dimitri’s hand.

"Just because I talk slow, don’t mean I’m stupid," smirked Dimitri even as his eyes started to glow red. "I waited ten thousand years in one human body after another," the Sin continued, staring at the organ. It should make a nice present for his Devil.

Building a gilded cage around the heart, Wrath continued, "Do you know what that does to a demon?"

"I will fully admit, I was an uncontrollable flame of rage," he said, holding the cage up high as if inspecting it for imperfections. "But as the centuries passed, my fire became honed. Like steel in the forge."

Dimitri listened to Wrath’s words, even as the jungle rose to eat the offering in front of it.

"I’m not fire anymore. We are not fire anymore," Wrath continued, turning around to walk back down the path. "I’m pressure. I’m time. I’m weight. I’m the voice you hear when death isn’t coming fast enough. I’m what you get when the world lets evil fester—and someone finally does something about it."

Dimitri nodded his head. "But what happens if I want to be more than that?" he asked the Sin inside of him. "What happens if I want to be a shield as well as a gun?"

"Then be a shield," shrugged Wrath, not at all concerned. "Be whatever it is that you want to be, as long as you remember that you are first and foremost Hattie’s."

"Well, now," purred Dimitri as his spine softened and his accent returned along with the smile on his face. "Den, let me tell ya now, I’ve got some plans for Colt and dem."

"It’s about time."
