Chapter 350: The Theme For Today
I watched the kid in Désiré’s arms staring happily at the two chocolate bars I had found in my space. I had killed the last kid who had demanded my lollypop, but in this situation, I was blaming it all on Désiré. I would take my pound of flesh from his hide.
It was a damn good thing that I didn’t like chocolate nearly as much as I liked candy. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know what to do.
Even as I was silently planning the destruction of one of my men, the building under my feet started to sway with the next wave that hit. The walls were straining as they tried to fight against the rising tide, but it was a futile effort.
If I looked closely at the walls above the window, I could see jagged cracks starting to form above the frame before spreading out to all sides.
"You did good, Princess," muttered Chang Xuefeng as Tank slipped under my hand. I get why he had to be in hellhound form, but even still, I missed the man.
"Everyone is going to die," I remarked instead, not giving him the satisfaction of answering him. From this point on, I was going to completely forget about my moment of weakness, giving candy to a baby, and carry on as if I was still a badass.
It wasn’t like I was wrong, either. With all the drama, we still had less than half of the survivors on the boat. If they didn’t get their asses in gear, everyone left in the building was going to die. Either the building was going to crush them, or the dolphins were going to get a snack. Either way, their ending was going to be the same.
"Let’s hurry up, people," called Sadie as if realizing the same thing. "The building isn’t going to last for much longer. If you need help, call one of us and we can help."
See, yet another point as to why she was better than me. I was going to leave everything up to their own fates. Sure, I could snap my fingers and have everyone on the boat with all their shit, but why would I put that much effort into things?
Besides, wishing was always an option, and not a single person had done that yet.
Rolling my head around my shoulders, I let out a long sigh. I didn’t know why my house had sent me here, I didn’t know what I needed to do to get home, but I was beginning to think that maybe killing everyone and simply walking back to O City was looking like the best option.
I didn’t really do crowds.
At Sadie’s words, the people around me started to speed up, some not so gently pushing me, Chang Xuefeng, and Tank to the side so that they could get to the gangplank faster.
"You okay, Cher?" asked Ronan, as he came to a stop in front of me. His palm gently cupped my cheek as he looked into my eyes. "You lookin’ mighty murderous."
"Contemplating life," I replied. Closing my eyes, I let his hand support my head.
"Well, nobody’s life is more important den yours," murmured Ronan, kissing my forehead. "You do whatever you want ta do, yous know we be supportin’ you no matter what."
I hummed, slowly nodding my head. First things first was to get everyone one the boat before the building collapsed. That will make Sadie happy. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll finally be able to get a good night’s sleep.
Right now, that was my ultimate goal.
"Ten people left," grunted Colt, interrupting my moment with Ronan. "Plus, you guys."
"You wouldn’t be thinking of abandoning us in the building, would you?" chuckled Dante as he came over. The rest of the guys were doing what they could to get the survivors on the ship, but they were moving slower than molasses going uphill on a cold day.
Colt didn’t bother to respond, only continued to stare at my face as if I had all the answers in the world. I mean, I probably did, but that didn’t mean I was telling him shit.
"What do you want?" I sighed, closing my eyes. Ronan’s hand was still on my cheek, so I really wasn’t caring about anything else but his touch at the moment.
"You grant wishes, right?" answered Colt softly, his voice barely covering the short distance between the two of us.
"The giant ship outside your apartment building didn’t clue you into that fact?" I sneered back.
I heard his frustrated sigh, but I didn’t really care. I think that was going to be my theme for today... not caring.
"I have a wish," Colt said after a minute when I didn’t keep going.
"And I can grant you that wish," I replied. "But it will come at a cost; not everyone gets wishes for free. So, before you open your mouth to make a wish, I suggest that you think about what you would be willing to give up in exchange."
Colt was silent for a moment, his eyes staring into mine as if he wanted to open my head and see what was going on in there. Joke’s on him. I had no idea.
"I wish for Sadie to stay alive and live a happy life," he said at last, his mouth barely forming the words. I could hear his wish in my head better than I could hear it through his words. "In exchange, I am willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen."
"Even if it means being a servant for the rest of your life?" I asked, straightening my head. My eyes narrowed, wondering if he would actually keep his word.
There was a long pause. "I would be willing to give up my life for hers," Colt said shortly. "We have no idea what is going to come next, and if those dolphins are a precursor, then the world has changed a lot more than I originally thought."
"Dying for her is easy," I shrugged. "I am asking you if you are willing to put everything aside and live for her."
"I am."
