Chapter 348: Blood In The Water

Chapter 348: Blood In The Water

It was a case of perfect timing because as soon as I had brought everything into my space, the door to Sadie’s apartment opened, and the first group of survivors filed in.

The majority of them had a bag slung over their backs, but a few had blankets and other things wrapped in a bundle in their arms. I think Colt’s rules for what they could bring were considered to be more of a suggestion than an absolute. Meh... it really didn’t matter to me.

"You can’t take all that," snarled Colt as one woman approached the window with three rolling suitcases, a bag on her back, a bag on her front, and multiple grocery bags in her other hand. I was really impressed with just how much she was able to carry, given the fact that she was also in skin-tight jeans, a bright yellow tank top, and bright yellow stilettos.

If it was me, I wouldn’t be able to walk three steps without falling flat on my face.

"Watch me," replied the woman, her lips curling back in a snarl as she got ready to throw down. Shoulder checking Colt to the side, she stood in front of the window, waiting for the previous person to make it onto the ship.

"I’m not joking about this, Colette," snapped Colt with just as much attitude as the woman. "You bring one bag. One that can easily be carried on your back, and that is it."

"One bag?" sneered Colette, spinning around to look at the other man. "You expect my life to fit into one fucking backpack? I hate to break it to you, Colt. But no one gives a damn about what you think or your rules. You and Sadie decided to bring us all together for a kumbaya moment and then think you can order us around? I will tell you right now; I am not putting up with it."

I didn’t know if I should be cheering for the woman standing against Colt or checking to make sure she had taken her medications for the day. I think that if the dictionary had an entry for ’too stupid to live’ her face would be right next to it.

"Leave her," said Sadie, walking over to Colt. Putting her hand on his arm, she looked at him. "If she wants to do it on her own, then let her. We have no idea what we are facing next."

I could almost finish the sentence in my head that they might as well take a guinea pig along for the ride so that she could die first. Nodding my head in agreement with Sadie, I watched the woman spinning around with a huff and stepping onto the plank.

"This isn’t going to go well," grunted Chang Xuefeng as he came to stand behind me.

"No kidding," I smiled up at him. Taking a lollypop out of my space, I stuck it in my mouth. The sugar flooded my system, and I couldn’t help but grin at the Angel of Death. "Should we make a bet on how long she is going to last?"

The two of us turned our attention back to Colette, just in time to see her struggling to lift up her three suitcases onto the plank behind her. The ship was still bobbing up and down in the water, making everything that much more difficult.

"Here, let me help you," sighed Sadie after a minute. Taking a step forward, she was stopped by the glare on the other woman’s face.

"I don’t need your help," hissed Colette as she continued to struggle. "You are just a two-faced bitch who thinks that she is better than everyone else."

The smile was gone from my face as I listened to the woman’s words. I didn’t give a flying fuck about Colette. The bitch could live or die on her own... but no one spoke to my friend like that.

Chang Xuefeng, sensing my change of mood, stopped me. "There is no need to get your hands dirty," he murmured softly in my ear. "Just relax. We have a lot of people we need to get on the boat first. After that, there are a hundred ways for her to die."

Stiffly, I nodded my head. My hands were already dirty, stained with so much death and destruction that they would never get cleaned enough for societal standards. But because of that, I would never hesitate to look after someone that was mine.

And Sadie was mine.

Suddenly, a scream wretched me from my thoughts. Looking up, I saw Colette balancing backward on her heels, trying to regain solid footing. Both the suitcases and the grocery bags were long gone as her arms continued to pinwheel around. But it was too late.

The second a wave hit against the building, Colette lost the fight with gravity and fell into the water with a loud splash.

"Someone help her!" called out Sadie, even as she started to take off her shoes.

"It’s too late," announced another survivor as he looked out the window. Curious, I moved beside him, only to see a large pool of blood in the water. Sleek shadows, just beneath the surface, darted in and out of the blood.

Every so often, one would come to the surface to breathe air, the sun reflecting off its grey skin for only a second before disappearing under the water... going in for another bite.

The longer I stared, the more I could make out of the mysterious, man-eating creature. It had a crooked dorsal fin... and teeth... a lot, a lot of teeth.

As if sensing that it had my attention, one of the creatures popped his head out of the water and returned my gaze. It kind of looked like the pictures I had seen of dolphins with rounded heads, intelligent eyes, and a bottlenose. However, I had never seen a dolphin with teeth like these.

They looked like razor blades that had been broken off, or glass shards that would easily slice off a finger if you weren’t careful. The dolphin smiled at me, letting out a soft chirp as if to say ’Thanks for the meal,’ and then it disappeared under the waves.

"Where the fuck did that come from?"
