Chapter 346: 140 Degree Difference
Time seemed to stop at the woman’s announcement, and those who could ran to the window. Sure enough, the falling snow had completely stopped.
A full moon shone over the frozen tundra as only the very tops of trees could be seen in the distance. An eerie howl of an artic wolf called out to its pack, spreading the good news: the snow had stopped falling.
"Ah, shit," grunted Luca, taking in a deep breath as he looked around at his brothers. The other men had the same uneasy look on their faces as he did.
Colt, however, scoffed from where he was standing beside Luca. "What? You liked the snow? I can tell you now I was already done with it after the first ten minutes. At least now, I should be able to get out tomorrow and try to find some food."
"Okay," muttered Beau, walking over to Luca, a look of resignation on his face. "Who made a wish?"
"And what is going to come next?" nodded Dante.
The nine men had been around Hattie to know that there was always some sort of fallout to a wish. They just couldn’t figure out what the downside of not having snow could possibly be.
-----
"The snow stopped," announced Sadie as she looked out the windows. "I will fully admit that I was scared that it would never stop."
"You said you wanted heat," I shrugged, staring at the marshmallows that continued to bob up and down in my hot chocolate. "Granting wishes is kinda my thing."
"That’s your mutant power? Granting wishes? Doesn’t that make you more of a genie than anything else?" smiled Sadie, turning her attention away from the window and back to me. Without the falling snow, everything seemed to be darker, like a light was gone from the outside.
My eyes narrowed as I heard the wolves calling out to each other. I really couldn’t figure out if I wanted a fur coat or a pet wolf. But either way, I was definitely going to have to go out tomorrow and try to find one or two to take home.
"I’m special," I shrugged. "Even if you lived for ten thousand years, you will never find another like me."
----
I don’t know when I fell asleep, but when I woke up, it was in a pool of my own sweat. "Holy crap, it is hotter than 40 hells out here," muttered Sadie, coming into the living room. I guess I had managed to fall asleep on the chair that I was sitting in, and Sadie flopped down onto the couch beside me.
Nodding my head, I pulled my hair up and started fanning the back of my neck. Before either one of us could say anything else, the door to the apartment flew open, and a very upset Colt stormed into the room, followed by the rest of the guys.
"Morning," I called out, cracking my neck from side to side. I think I was getting too old to sleep on a couch because every muscle in my body was aching. "How was your sleep?"
"Who the fuck cares about sleep?" snapped Colt with more hostility than my brain could process. "Pack what you can; we have to leave. Now," he continued, dropping to his knees in front of Sadie.
"What’s going on?" yawned the woman, clearly as confused as I am.
"The temperature rose 140 degrees overnight," announced Dante, his eyes narrowing on me like I was somehow responsible for it. "It went from -70 degrees Celsius to plus 70. The snow is melting rapidly, but it has no place to go. The apartment is flooding."
"And me without my boat," smirked Désiré, looking at me with a bright smile.
"That’s not possible," replied Sadie, her eyes never leaving Colt’s. "The ground is still frozen."
"Which is why we are getting flash flooding," agreed Colt. "And that water is finding its way inside the building. I am worried that if we don’t move fast, we are going to drown in here without a way out."
"Okay," nodded Sadie, coming to her feet. Pulling her long sleeve shirt over her head, she adjusted her white tank top. "We need sunscreen, hats, a way to keep cool. At that temperature, the majority of people are going to get heat stroke within seconds. Especially since we aren’t prepared or acclimated to the heat right now."
Tilting my head back, I closed my eyes. Was it really too much to get a good night’s sleep? I mean, I get no rest for the wicked, but even the Devil had to sleep once in a while. My head was starting to pound, I was dizzy, and my eyes were blurry.
I just wanted my bed! But no, my house decided that I had to take this fucking detour. I wasn’t going to forget this. The house might. It might think that it wouldn’t face my retribution, but it would. I’ll figure out some way to get back at it. Even if it took a hundred years.
"Do we have a raft or something?" asked Sadie, pulling me out of my dreams of revenge. She must have run into her bedroom or something because she came out with only a backpack on her back. "We aren’t going to be able to keep our heads above water. Not to mention the temperature."
"No raft," sighed Colt. "Given how far away any large body of water is, I really didn’t take it into consideration."
Sadie simply nodded her head, and I could see her mind rushing to come up with a solution. "Have we lost anyone?" she murmured softly, her head down.
"Two of the seniors," replied Colt, reaching out and gripping her hands as if to offer comfort. "They were right next to the fire when the heat hit."
Sadie nodded her head, and my heart broke at the sad look on her face.
"The good news is that I can get my hands on a boat," I quickly announced, trying to lighten the mood. "I just need someone to make a wish."
