Chapter 344: If You Could Have Anything

Sadie pulled me away from the guys and pushed open the door to the stairs. "Sorry about that," she apologized with a bright grin on her face. "The elevators were one of the first things to freeze."

"I don’t see how I can blame you for the weather," I chuckled, following up behind her.

"We’re in Country N; apologizing for the weather is just one of our things," she chuckled back. "Sorry that it’s too hot, sorry that it’s too cold, sorry that it is raining, sorry that it is sunny, sorry that it is snowing, sorry that it isn’t snowing."

"Do you guys have control over the weather then that you can apologize for it?" I asked, almost certain that I wasn’t joking anymore. I thought you were only supposed to apologize for things that were in your control. Weather was definitely one of those things that were not under human control.

Yet.

I could change that if she really wanted me to.

"I wish," sighed Sadie as she opened one of the doors. It wasn’t the highest level; there was still at least one more staircase leading up, but then again, that might be the roof for all that I knew. "If I could control the weather, I’d never see another snowflake for as long as I lived."

Nodding in agreement because... outside and everything... I followed her like a little puppy down the hall and into one of the doors in the middle. I could already feel a warmth in the hallway that the sixth floor didn’t have and I realized just what she meant by hot air rises.

"It’s warm here," I sighed as she pushed open the door. The room that greeted me fit my image of Sadie to a T. It smelled like coffee grounds, baked bread, and pine trees, and there were crocheted blankets all over the furniture and folded in piles in corners.

Bookshelves, covered in actual books, lined one wall with the occasional old photograph in black or silver frames dotting the shelves. The wall at the far end of the apartment was nothing but windows with floor-to-ceiling black curtains every few feet.

"The view was one of the reasons why I fell in love with this place and paid a stupid amount of money to live here. The view of the mountains was everything I had ever wanted. Now I think it was one of the dumbest decisions I have ever made."

As she spoke, Sadie walked over to the open-concept kitchen. Starting the gas stove, she placed a kettle on the small flame. "I have never been more grateful for Colt convincing me to change out the electric stove for a gas one. Knock on wood, this one is working perfectly."

"Why do you regret the apartment?" I asked, walking over to the window to see what she had seen. However, all I could see was a wall of snow scratching at the windows. Shivering at the sound, I stepped back just as Sadie came out from behind the island and picked up a blanket.

Wrapping it around my shoulders, she brought me over to the couch and sat me down. "Windows don’t have much if any insulation. They allow more cold in than I want, but shutting the curtains makes the place too dark."

Nodding my head, I tossed the lollypop back into my space and pulled the blanket closer.

"Where did your lollypop go?" she asked, cocking her head to the side even as the kettle started screaming at her.

"My space," I answered. "It’s like a giant invisible pocket where I can put everything in and pull it out when I want."

"You really are a little mutant, aren’t you?" she laughed softly, rubbing my head. "I would love to have a space. Colt worked as a wilderness guide since forever, it was actually how we met. Anyway, he had an entire apartment full of supplies, so when he moved in with me, they came with him. I thought he was an idiot, but I couldn’t be more grateful for his prepping now. Even with the three years of supplies he managed to gather, they are almost all gone."

Getting up from the couch, Sadie returned to the kitchen. Pulling down a mug from one of the cabinets, she started making my hot chocolate. "If you are running out, don’t worry about me," I quickly said before she poured the water into the dry mix. "I don’t want to put you out."

"Unfortunately, hot chocolate isn’t enough to fill me up," laughed Sadie with a shake of her head. "I can spare a cup or two."

Humming in happiness, I watched her bring over the cup and handed it to me. Taking the first sip, I didn’t care that I almost burnt my tongue off; it was amazing. I felt like I was being hugged from the inside out, and I couldn’t help but take another sip.

"If you could have anything in the world, what would you want?" I asked, cocking my head to the side as a small white cloud appeared in my drink. "What is that?" I continued, poking at the thing and watching it sink back down before floating up again.

"Mini marshmallows," answered Sadie. "You can’t have hot chocolate without them."

Nodding my head, feeling like a bobblehead around her, I took another drink. "So, about your wish?"

"That question is a loaded question," replied Sadie, curling up on the couch beside me. "Technically, I have everything that I want at the moment. Colt is beside me, and at the end of the day, that is all that matters. I could die tomorrow; what is the purpose of dreaming about things when I know the comfort of Colt’s arms?"

"I’m asking hypothetically," I said, looking down into my drink. "You don’t have to be practical. I have never had many girl friends; I don’t really know how to do the whole girl talk thing."

Sadie smiled before going back to thinking about my question. "If I could have anything in the world, I would want to live in the tropics. But I think I would miss home too much, plus you can’t have Christmas without snow, so there is that whole thing. However, I am also done with winter, so heat would be nice right about now."
