Chapter 343: Manners
"No," replied the man, his voice almost as cold as mine. "But that doesn’t mean I haven’t survived worse."
"I can promise you; you haven’t survived worse than me," I said, pulling the lollypop out of my mouth. It was a licorice-flavored one that I hadn’t had before, but it was pretty good. I was actually impressed.
Mind you, it still wasn’t as good as banana, but then again, nothing was.
"Enough," sighed a new female voice. At the sound of her voice, the man stiffened for a second, his eyes burrowing into me as if trying to figure out if he could take me out or not. The easy answer was that he couldn’t, but I was more interested in the shift of attitude.
"Come on, Colt. You’ve properly marked your territory, but we don’t want trouble. Besides, the poor girl is freezing! We have plenty of space for them to crash for the night." The woman who appeared next to the man smiled at me... almost welcoming.
But that was impossible, right?
She was dressed the same as Colt, and her long blonde hair was braided and hung over her shoulder. She was probably almost six feet tall, not quite as tall as the man, but definitely taller than me. She looked like she could single-handedly toss a tree over her shoulder and knit a pair of mittens all at the same time.
Oh my Devil... I think I had a girl crush on her.
"Thank you," I smiled at her, pushing Dante out of the way so I could get closer to her. She was like the sun, and I wanted to bask in her smile.
Colt, as if reading my mind, looked down at me and growled low as if warning me away from his woman. Ah, that made sense. The reason why he both softened and thought about taking me out was all because of her.
"Not our problem, Sadie," reminded Colt, his voice rumbling with his displeasure. I think most normal women would be backing away right about now, but Sadie simply cuffed him upside the head.
"Manners," she hissed at him, like a wife or a mother scolding their husband or son. I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing, but my crush on this woman increased even more. Maybe I should start smacking the guys upside the head when they were stupid.
Turning around to look at my men, I burst out laughing when they all backed up a step.
Letting out a suffering sigh, Sadie stepped away from Colt and walked toward me. "Name’s Sadie," she nodded, holding out her hand for me to shake. I narrowed my eyes, wondering if I should shake her hand or go in for a hug.
I must have been in my head for too long because the next thing I knew, she was withdrawing her hand, and Colt was back to growling at me.
"Sorry," I said, shaking my head. "I think this is a whole new level of brain freeze," I continued, smiling shyly at her. "I’m Hattie, I grant wishes."
There was a chorus of growls and sighs from behind me, and this time, Sadie burst out laughing. "I see," she nodded before stepping to the side and sweeping her hand down the hall. "Come on in. We don’t have a lot to eat, but I’m sure I can find you a cup of hot chocolate or something."
"You sure?" demanded Colt, but his tone was softer this time, more submissive... if a man like that could ever be submissive. It was like Sadie’s opinion was the only one that mattered.
"Yup," she assured him with a nod. Meanwhile, her eyes never left mine. "It’s too cold for anyone to be out in this weather... even mutants." Her eyes were twinkling with her joke, and I couldn’t help but smile back.
"We have a healer, water power user, fire power user," I started, already willing to sell the guys out to her. "Whatever you need, we can give it to you!"
"Aren’t you just the sweetest," murmured Sadie. Reaching out, she stroked my hair, and I couldn’t help but close my eyes. "We do have a few people dealing with first bite. However, I don’t know if they can be saved."
Looking over my shoulders, I blinked at Salvatore. The man stepped forward with a long sigh before stopping beside me. "Anything," he said, a soft smile on his face. He knew I was selling him, and yet he was still willing to count the money for me.
"That’s what makes you my favorite," I purred at him, even as Sadie burst out laughing.
"I can heal, too," grunted Ronan. Passing his gun to Luca, he went to stand on the other side of me. "You can’t play favorites!"
"Anything else you need?" I asked as Sadie pulled me forward a bit and snaked her arm in mine. "Really, I can get you anything."
"You really are too sweet for this world," she answered, shaking her head. "Colt, show the men to their apartment. I’m going to find hot chocolate for Hattie."
"Fine," replied Colt, clearly not happy. "But they are going to be on one of the lower floors."
"Don’t care," shrugged Dimitri, pouting just a bit as he put away his knife.
I looked at Sadie, confused. Why did the floor level seem so important?
"In a country like this, you learn one thing fast," she smiled down at me, patting my arm. "Heat rises. The upper floors are always the warmest ones. Great in winter, sucks in summer. Summer is when we all sleep in the basement."
Smiling back, I nodded my head. No wonder the attic was always so hot. I’d have to remember that bit of advice.
"But don’t think that just because we are letting you sleep here that we are giving you food," snapped Colt, clearly not impressed with us being in his territory but not knowing how to kick us out without pissing off Sadie.
"Manners, Colt," sighed Sadie again.
"Fine. Welcome to Hell. Try not to freeze to death."
