Chapter 337: Worse Than A Traitor

Chapter 337: Worse Than A Traitor

The sun hadn’t even risen when Réne had called an all-hands-on-deck meeting. "We need to give the people an explanation," he said, looking around the room.

Everyone who had a command was there: Adam and Eve, Bishop and Sophia, and Alicia. They were the power core that made New Dawn Sanctuary what it was, and they had to present a united front, no matter what personal squabbles were going on.

"Is there even anyone left to explain to?" demanded Bishop, his face impassive as he looked over at Adam. The other man simply raised an eyebrow before dismissing Bishop like he was beneath him.

Fucker.

"Look, I know you are upset," sighed Alicia, as she rubbed her forehead. The circles under her eyes spoke volumes about her quality of sleep last night. "But this is the end of the world. We don’t have the ability to crumble and fold because things got too tough. If we back down or call it quits, what happens next? What happens to those who look to us to give them that feeling of security?"

"Security?" sneered Bishop, even as Sophia squeezed his hand, warning him to back down. "Our people would have stood a better chance of surviving without the walls around us. They were trapped with things out of nightmares! There is no coming back from that."

"I disagree," sighed Eve. She and Adam were sitting on the couch, and they both had a mug of coffee in their hands as they tried to wake up. "Alicia was right. People are looking to us for security. If we want the human race to survive, we have to give that to them."

"Good fucking luck," sneered Bishop.

"Residents of New Dawn Sanctuary!" called out Réne from his position behind a podium. The six leaders of the base were standing in front of the entrance of the main tower, ready to give the people an explanation.

His words rang out around the base, calling people to him, even if they didn’t want it. As the strongest Spirit user in the base, it didn’t take much for Réne to convince the people that they wanted to hear what he had to say.

He wasn’t manipulating them; he wasn’t taking away their free will, but he was using his power to enter their mind, to adjust their memories of last night and make sure that they understood what was going on.

When there were barely a thousand men, women, children, and elderly standing in front of him on the main street, he continued with a nod of his head.

"I want to start by apologizing to you," he called out, his voice ringing in the people’s ears and minds. "Some of our people were hurt when a group of rebels attacked the base last night. You didn’t deserve that! You deserve a safe place, a place where your children can run around with their friends, laughing and playing. You deserve a place where you know the face and hearts of your neighbors, where you always have a full belly and a soft place to sleep at night."

The crowd was silent as Réne spoke, his words easing the tension and fear inside of them from last night. He was right. They did deserve more than that! They deserved a safe place to raise their families, and they needed to know their neighbor’s hearts.

"How did they get in?" demanded one man. "I thought our walls were impenetrable!"

The crowd around him nodded their heads, and they looked at each other. The walls were supposed to keep the bad things out, so how did the rebels get in? Did the walls fail?"

"Our walls are impenetrable!" assured Alicia, walking over to stand beside her husband. Réne took her hand before looking down at her with love and devotion on his face. "Our walls didn’t fail us! One of us did!"

Her head dipped down, even as she all but said that there was a traitor in their midst. The tension that was just released rose again as people looked around, terrified that the traitor was standing right beside them.

"We have a traitor in our midst," nodded Alicia, making sure to nail in that point. She might not have the same spirit power that Réne did, but Réne was making sure that her words were just as impactful as his own.

Bishop let out a sigh of relief as he looked down at Sophia. The human, his woman, squeezed his hand in support. This was it. This was the moment that Alicia told everyone the truth. This was the moment she tore Adam’s mask off and exposed him as the psychopath that he truly was.

"I am embarrassed to admit that we trust him. We became friends with him, not knowing that he was here to destroy mankind! He brought the rebels here! He opened our gates and invited in those who wanted nothing more than to take what is yours!"

Shouts of anger and fear echoed around the main street as Alicia continued her impassioned speech. Bishop furrowed his brows, wondering what she was talking about.

There were no rebels. As head of the Base’s security, he knew that better than anyone. And even if there were rebels, no human was responsible for the massacre last night. What was going on?!?

"As head of our security, it was General Bishop’s job to keep everyone safe!" took over Réne, even as Bishop fought through the confusion in his mind. Since when was he a General? He had never been in the military!

What the ever-loving fuck was going on right now?!?

"But he failed," murmured Alicia, wiping an invisible tear just as the crowd when silent, their bodies leaning forward to catch her every word. But they didn’t have to worry. Alicia made sure that they knew everything she said. "He failed you, and he failed us."

Bishop’s stomach sank as he looked at the couple at the podium.

"Bishop Duhon isn’t a General. That was just something he said to make sure he could be in charge of our base’s security. Instead, he worked with the Sins first and then the Rebels to bring about the destruction of humanity. Worse than a traitor: Bishop is a monster."
