Chapter 329: Adam Created Them
"We need to find her," growled Dante as he looked off to the side. In the shadows behind Ronan, no less than a dozen pairs of white eyes stared back at him. "I don’t think the New Dawn Sanctuary is going to last past tonight."
Jonas, who was being held between Beau and Désiré, let out a whimper of distress. "It’s a Z-Pack," he announced, his legs going weak as he stared at the eyes. "How did they get inside the Sanctuary? Did you bring them here?"
"Us?" demanded Chang Xuefeng. "Hardly. You did everything but a cavity search when we arrived. And if you are hinting that we had those things up our asses..."
The Grim Reaper snorted as he looked at the split ground. The opening was at least five feet, and they needed to be on the other side if Jonas could be believed. Right now, it seemed like everyone was going against him, trying to keep him away from his Wish Girl. But the one thing everything in this universe was going to need to learn was that you didn’t keep the Reaper from what was his.
"You need to kill them," hissed Jonas, looking around his body frantically for his radio. But it was useless. Before he could say another word, the Z-Pack charged forward. Completely ignoring Ronan, they easily leaped over the chasm and rushed past the nine men.
"I don’t understand," whispered Jonas as the sound of more and more screams cut through the night air. The pack was known for being merciless, tearing apart their victims before consuming their flesh.
The problem was that, unlike normal zombies, they didn’t stop killing when they had a sacrifice. A Z-Pack will keep killing until nothing was left and then pull the dead bodies into a pile that they would then huddle around.
If another zombie or pack tried to get close, the Z-Pack that had been responsible for the killings would go on the attack, protecting their kills.
"They are smart," shrugged Dante as he grabbed Jonas by the collar and flung him over the crack in the earth. "They don’t mess with predators that are stronger than them. It’s one of the unspoken rules."
Jonas let out a string of curses as Ronan stepped to the side, letting the Commander fall to the ground. "It’s not like you are Gods. The Z-Pack will take out everything human, and even the zombies, if they are dumb enough to get in their way."
Struggling to his feet, he pulled out the K-bar he had hidden in his boot and pressed it against Ronan’s neck. "Now, you are going to listen to me, or I am going to kill him."
"Is dis a 50 First Dates type thing?" asked Désiré as he hopped effortlessly over the crack in the earth. "Dat man has too short of a memory if dat de case."
"Been dere, done dat," sighed Ronan as he gripped the knife. "Yous shot me in de head, remember? It was a whole thin’ in yer office."
"Stop playing with your food," snarled Dante. The scent of blood was now the most dominant thing, and it was making both him and Pride edgy. They haven’t seen Hattie for too long, and until they could confirm that she was alive and well...
In a few strides, Dante was standing in front of Jonas, one hand on his shoulder and the other on his wrist. Tugging almost gently, he pulled the man’s arm off.
"Feel better, Bossman?" chuckled Beau as he landed on the other side. Ronan was already ripping the sleeve of the Commander’s shirt off and stuffing it in his mouth to try and muffle the sounds.
"Not even a little," grunted Dante. Casually throwing the limb over his shoulder and into the massive crack, he turned his attention to the Commander. "Now, which way is my woman?"
----
"Bishop!" called Réne as he quickly walked down the hallway. People on either side of him rushed to get out of his way. They could hear the screams of the civilians outside, but none of them were willing to go out and see what was going on.
Almost everyone in this building was an office manager or administrator in some way, shape, or form. They made sure that the day to day running of the Sanctuary went well, but they weren’t responsible for security.
The moment Réne passed them, they raced to their offices, locking the door behind them before hiding wherever they could.
"Don’t bother," sneered Bishop as he leaned against the frame of his office door. "Adam has already told me not to do anything, and heaven help us all if that man isn’t obeyed."
Réne froze, his eyes going wide as he stared at the other man. "You can’t be serious?" he hissed, looking around before pushing Bishop back into his office and closing the door. The sound of the zombie alarm was just starting up as the two men went to the window to see what was going on. "Adam had something to do with this?"
"The fucker was probably bored or got a hang nail or something," snarled Bishop back. He might not have agreed with everything that Dante had done, but at least he wasn’t as bipolar as Adam was.
"That doesn’t mean he can release packs without at least consulting with us first!" replied Réne as he watched one of the Z-Pack leaping into the air and snapping the head off of a woman without any effort at all.
The body crumpled to the ground just as the animal touched down and spat out her head.
"When does he consult us about anything. In fact, you don’t seem to be too surprised about the pack in our Sanctuary. Did you know he had them?"
Bishop had never really subscribed to the theory ’better the devil you know’ until this moment. However, even in this new world, there was no medicine for regret. If there was, he never would have left the Lair, no matter how much Dante and Tank had changed.
Réne looked at Bishop and for a single second, a look of guilt flashed across his face. "It’s not a matter of Adam having them," he started before going to sit down on the couch. "Adam created them."
