Chapter 306: Humans Are Special

Chapter 306: Humans Are Special

Pushing the woman away, Salvatore smirked at her as she frantically patted her side, trying to find the knife wounds he had given her. However, there would be nothing to see.

Not only had he healed her outer skin, but he also ’healed’ her clothing, too.

Now if she told anyone what had happened, no one would believe her. Ever so slowly, she would bleed out from wounds she couldn’t heal, and she would go insane.

It wasn’t an ideal form of vengeance for what she had done to Hattie, but Salvatore refused to spend a moment longer than he had to in her presence.

Strolling over to Désiré, Salvatore pushed the unpleasantness from his mind even as he pushed his friend out of the way. "You deal," he grunted, plucking Hattie out from the center of the four me.

Glaring at the human beside his woman, Salvatore spun around and walked down the main street.

The crowds parted for him, the looks on their faces a mixture of awe and fear as he continued forward. He had no idea where he was going, but that was fine. He didn’t need to know the directions when he knew the destination.

The second he was out from everyone’s eyesight; he opened the first door he could find and walked into their home. The house greeted the two of them, dissolving the illusions that clung to their skin like a second skin.

He couldn’t remember whose bright idea it was for them to go to the Sanctuary to rescue five grown ass men who couldn’t rescue themselves. But whoever came up with this idea, he was going to punch them in the face the second he saw them.

"I got you now, Starshine," he purred, kissing Hattie on the forehead even as he carried her up the stairs to the master bedroom. "You don’t need to worry about anything. We are home, and I am here. The rest of the world can get fucked."

Jonas rubbed his temples as more and more information appeared on the giant conference table in front of him.

Adam, in all his glory, was seated at the head of the massive table, an amused smile on his face as he studied the other man. Bishop was also in the room, seated across from Jonas as he, too, went through the papers, trying to get a fix on the situation.

"There has to be a mole, or a traitor, something or someone inside the Sanctuary that is sabotaging us," growled Jonas in frustration as he started to go back through the personnel files. "First the holes, then the explosion, it can’t be a coincidence. Not when they happened so close to each other."

"I don’t really care about the holes or the explosion," chuckled Adam, waving his hand in dismissal. "What I am interested in is this report of a demon dog ripping through hundreds of our civilians. Why don’t you tell me more about that?"

Jonas let out a low groan as he flopped back in his chair. "He belongs to Lucy Knight, a woman we allowed in yesterday. While Lucy herself might be a dud, she is able to set her dog on fire."

"Fascinating," murmured Adam, a gleam in his eyes as he leaned forward. "How can she be both a dud and control fire?"

"See, that’s the thing," grunted Jonas, a look of rage crossing his face before he put back on a blank mask. "I don’t think she is a fire user. I think that she raised this dog from a puppy; the puppy developed the mutation, and since he obeys her in everything, she can pass it off as her own power."

"The dog is the mutant?" demanded Bishop, shaking his head. "I didn’t think that animals could develop the mutation."

"Oh, they can," dismissed Adam. "I have an entire room full of caged rats that display zombie-like tendencies and another room of rats that have mutated powers. As per usual, humans just like to think that they are special."

"You have two rooms of rats that..." started Bishop before he shook his head. Nope, he wasn’t touching that kettle of fish any time soon. All he had to do was hope and pray that none of them got out.

"And rabbits, and gators, and a few birds, too," chuckled Adam like it was all one big joke. "Where I am having trouble is with the insects. They can carry the virus and mutations, but they don’t display them."

"Tell me that you are not creating more shit down in those labs of yours," hissed Bishop, coming to his feet as he slapped the table in front of him. "Tell me that you aren’t using our people... no, you said it was animals."

"No," replied Adam, a mischievous gleam in his eyes as he watched the two men in front of him panicking. "Finish that thought. You would be right. So go ahead, finish it."

"I thought you were working on a cure for the two different classes of zombies," grunted Jonas, his face going pale as he looked between the two men.

"And that is why we didn’t hire you for your brains," sneered Adam. "You have to create the problem if you also want to create the solution. And nobody ever remembers the problem. Only the person who created the solution and saved the entire world will go down in history."

"You’re fucking crazy," breathed Bishop, his eyes going wide. "There are more than enough zombies outside the walls for you to use as your ’problem’. Why are you doing this?"

"Because, dear Bishop, humans aren’t as fucking special as they like to think they are." The laughter coming from Adam was enough to cause goosebumps to appear on Jonas’ arms. The information being shared in this room was enough to get him killed if he didn’t plan his next step well.

"What do you need from me?" offered Jonas, his mind made up. If he wanted to keep living, then he needed to pick sides. And Bishop wasn’t strong enough to go against Adam.

"I need that dog," replied Adam, a look of approval on his face as he nodded his head.

"And the girl?"

"Kill her."
