Chapter 239: An Order Is An Order

Adam watched dispassionately as the nine men from the Dragon’s Lair ripped through more than 250 men. Those who hadn’t been killed were too cowardly to even face the battle. Their heads were still attached because they chose to run rather than to fight.

That meant that all of his best and brightest soldiers, who he had been training for over a decade, were lying dead or being eaten by whatever was living in the moat.

"We need to retreat," murmured Eve as she stood beside him. "Figure some way to spin this, but I am not willing to die today."

Adam snorted at that statement before he turned his attention to Bishop and Sophia. "I thought you said this was going to be easy?" he asked, his voice dark and dangerous. "Wasn’t that what you said? One girl, four men, and more supplies than we could ever dream?"

Bishop returned Adam’s stare with one of his own. "And? Was I wrong?"

Adam scoffed, his anger mounting as he continued to hear the burst of gunfire and the screams of his men right before they died. It was like the creatures doing the killing were making a game of it. The smiles on their faces certainly suggested as much.

"You were," replied Eve. "They are not human. There is no way they are simply enthralled by a little girl. We met her, and there was no hint of power coming from her."

"They call themselves The Sins," interrupted Réne, his voice devoid of emotion as he watched Luca slice through a soldier’s neck before she could even see him coming. The smile on his face was a familiar one... and one that Réne never thought would be seen in this situation.

"They said you were friends? Brothers?" mused Eve as she turned away from the bloodshed to look at Réne.

"I thought I knew them," nodded Réne. "But then I saw this. I guess it goes to show that you can know a person’s face but not their heart. I never would have thought they would be capable of this."

"Don’t be too hard on yourself," sighed Eve as she reached out to pat Réne’s shoulder. "The fact that they have followed a different path than the one laid out for them isn’t your fault."

"I know," agreed Réne, his face still devoid of emotion. "I blame her."

Lifting his finger, he pointed at the small girl who was now bleeding from multiple gunshots. However, it seemed like no matter how many times she was hit, it wasn’t enough to take her down.

"We’ll retreat for now," announced Alicia as she took Réne’s hand. Behind him stood Max, completely silent as he, too, watched the scene in front of them. "We need to regroup, recruit, and live to fight another day."

Adam’s eyes narrowed as he followed her gaze. "You," he said, pointing at Max. "Were you also friends with them?"

Before Max could reply, Alicia interjected herself into the conversation. "He is, and a good enough friend that he left the base with them before changing his mind. He only just returned a few months ago."

"Then go," smiled Adam. "Go fix your relationship with them. See what information you can get, and then report back."

"Excuse me?" demanded Max as he looked, wide-eyed, between Réne and Adam. "You are kidding, right? They are just as likely to kill me as they are to accept me."

"Go big or go home," shrugged Eve. "But we all know that they will accept you back. Especially if you claim that you hate Réne and Bishop. However, we need to know their weaknesses; we need to know where to strike next time. Because, make no mistake, there will be a next time. We will not let those men and women die in vain."

Max looked at Réne, his face turning pale as he saw Réne nodding his head in agreement. "You know there is no such thing as go big or go home. The second I get close, they are going to kill me, and then there will be no going home."

"They haven’t seen you," mused Sophia, a gentle smile on her face as she reached out to take Max’s hands. "And we aren’t saying go there right now. Find a good time and ’stumble’ on the house. If you need help, then your friends won’t be able to turn you down."

Max opened his mouth to argue, but Adam held up his hand to silence him. "There is no point in arguing about this anymore. It is happening. How you get yourself in is up to you, but you better do it fast. I’ll expect a progress report at least once a week."

"And just how am I going to send you this report?" snapped Max. "Carrier pigeon? Talking parrot? Because something tells me that I can’t just call or text anymore."

Even when he didn’t agree with what the guys were doing, they never forced him. In fact, it was he who cut ties with them, not the other way around. However, just like Réne, he knew Luca and the others well enough to know that they weren’t exactly going to welcome him with open arms.

"Use Hattie," whispered Alicia as she came to stand in front of him. "Don’t make it about being friends with them again; make it about her. They will be more understanding about that than anything else."

Max gritted his teeth and simply nodded his head. It was six against one, and he knew that he didn’t have a choice in the matter. He just hoped that it wouldn’t cost him his life.

"If that is really what you want me to do," he said finally, his face just as impassive as Réne’s. Adam wasn’t his brother; he didn’t get to order him around like that, but for Réne? He would do it for him.

"It is," nodded Réne, a sad smile appearing on his face. "If we had any other option, any at all of winning this war, you know I would have gone with that. But out of all of us, you stand the best chance at getting in."

Max decided not to waste his breath. The ’men’ around him had made a decision, and it was his job as a good little soldier to go along with it.

After all, an order was an order.

Even if it was a crappy one that would eventually end up killing him.
