Chapter 229: All In My Head

"Far be it for me to be the voice of reason," started Wrath as he narrowed his eyes at me. "But I don’t smell blood."

"What?" demanded Greed as his head swung back and forth between me and his brother. Deciding to roll over, I got comfortable on my back between Sloth and Envy. Ever so slowly, I lifted up the black shirt that I was currently wearing and looked down at my stomach.

Just like before, the wounds continued to bleed. Even when I swiped my finger through the blood, it acted as it should have. My finger took on a reddish hue, and the blood on my stomach was smudged.

"It’s blood," I blinked even as Sloth grabbed my finger and stuck it in his mouth. He sucked on it a few times, causing me to squirm for a completely different reason before giving it back to me.

"I don’t taste blood," he admitted, his eyes narrowing on my stomach. "So what looks like something but doesn’t smell like it or taste like it?"

I thought about the pillars of flames that I had first seen the day I met Luci. I could have sworn I could feel the heat coming off them, but I couldn’t smell them, and I heard birds singing in the background.

Was this another illusion?

Pushing aside the pain my brain told me that I should be feeling, I took a deep breath and plunged my hand between my legs. It was hot and wet, and it took me a few precious seconds, but I finally found the tiny bundle of nerves between my pussy’s lips.

Applying a small amount of pressure, I felt pleasure fluttering through my body. "Thank fuck," I sighed, pulling my hand out. It was covered in ’blood’, but I knew that everything down there was exactly how it should have been.

My brain acted on the illusion, telling me that I was in pain even though I wasn’t.

Holy fucking shit.

Envy took my entire hand, blood and all, and started licking it. His forked tongue danced across my palm and between my fingers. Wrapping it around my index finger, he lowered his head with a moan.

"It looks like blood," he murmured, his voice taking on an almost dreamy tone to it. "But it tastes like heaven. Fuck, I could eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner." Even as he spoke, his tongue continued to dance over my flesh as his eyes trailed to where the blankets were pulled up over my lap.

There was a sigh of relief from everyone around me, and the tension that had been in the room since I woke up from this nightmare was starting to dissipate.

"Random question," I muttered, pulling my shirt down. Maybe if I didn’t see the scratches, my brain would stop tricking me into thinking that I was hurt. "Who can make illusions that good?"

"You," chuckled Greed as he sat down at the foot of the bed. "As far as I know, only the Devil has the ability to manipulate reality that well. Normally, demons can see through illusions like they aren’t there. But when it came to you..."

"We all saw them," grunted Chang Xuefeng. Leaning against the wall that should be a door, his arms were crossed against his chest as his scythe was balanced beside him. "Not one of us doubted the blood."

"And that dream was fucking real," I sighed. "It was the first time I could feel the pain as it was happening. But it’s not like I would do that to myself. Right? I know I’m a bit fucked in the head, but that level of self-harm is something I had never considered before."

"Ah, but it was your Père who did that to you," muttered Greed as he cocked his head to the side. "And both Pride and I were there when you killed him. There is no coming back from that."

Pride nodded his head and hummed as he thought things through. "Your Père is dead. Even that militia fucker confirmed it."

"Ah, but this is the zombie apocalypse," I pointed out, snuggling even deeper between Sloth and Envy. "The dead are rude enough not to stay dead."

"Even if that was the case with that bastard, he wouldn’t be a demon. Zombies don’t become demons... it is just not possible," sighed Lust as he went to stand beside Wrath. "Right?"

"If there is anything I have learned in the past 18 years is that Hattie is the exception to every rule," sighed Greed.

"Just to be clear," I interjected. "Half of you are saying that this is all in my head, and the other half is saying that it is possible but not probable." There was a lot of things and words that I could ignore. People calling me names or being bitchy, that washed over me like water off a duck’s back.

But telling me that something was in my head? That just made me pissed.

"I wouldn’t go that far," sighed Sloth as he shifted so he was on his side, his arms and wing still around me. "I don’t think it is in your head. However, saying that... I’m worried. A demon with that level of power is something we have never come across in all the millennium we have been around."

Letting out a long sigh, Sloth closed his eyes and was promptly asleep.

"Fine," shrugged Gluttony. "We’ll split the difference," he continued, his eyes trailing over me as he spoke. "We plan as if Père is coming and, at the same time, we continue to feed and become stronger. We are stronger in this realm; we’ll be able to protect you."

I wanted to say something bad assed like I could take care of myself, but at the same time, my dream proved to me that I couldn’t.

I could fake it with the best of them, but when I was pinned down on the bed, I was helpless. It hadn’t even occurred to me to make a wish. When it came to Père, it seemed like I was still that little girl who was absolutely terrified of him.

But that also didn’t mean I couldn’t train and try to become strong enough.

"Okay," I agreed, looking at Gluttony. "Then that’s what we’ll do. We’ll put Père on the back burner and move one."
