Chapter 211: This Path Only Leads To One Destination
Tank turned around as he and the rest of Hattie’s men came to a stop just on the other side of the hill, cutting off her view from the Lair. "Any ideas?" he sighed as the beast inside of him let out a low whine the further he walked away from his little Lamb.
After everything that had happened and all the times she just seemed to disappear from right beside him, he really, really hated the idea of her out of his eyesight.
"Well," sighed Dante as he cracked his neck from side to side. "We do need supplies."
"Hattie made a wish that every supply in a 50-mile radius would automatically go into her space," sighed Gluttony as he looked out from behind Beau’s eyes. "Which means that we’ll have to go to 51 miles before we can find anything."
"I wonder where René’s navy base is in relation to this place," chuckled Pride, looking off in the distance. "Cause I am pretty sure that they’ll have some supplies we can snatch."
"I don’t think it matters how far away they are," shrugged Gluttony as if he, too, could see the base. "At this point in time, it is simply a matter of principle. We are going to have to take everything from them... supplies... furniture... paper... office supplies... staplers... filing cabinets..."
"Why would we need any of that shit?" sighed Tank as he rubbed his forehead.
"I told you, it’s a matter of principle... and I am a man of principles," replied Gluttony with a wave of his hand.
"You aren’t a man; you are a demon," pointed out Chang Xuefeng, trying desperately hard not to laugh at the whole conversation. Demons were a lot more fun to interact with than the angels were.
"We are taking all their shit," sneered Pride. "I gave René everything. He would have died when he was 16 if I hadn’t been there for him, he owed me his life, and instead of paying me back, he fucked off with another girl. No... we take everything."
"But it’s not like you are bitter or anything," chuckled Chang Xuefeng as he crossed his arms in front of his chest.
"I’m not bitter; I’m Pride. There is a difference and a certain reputation to uphold," snapped the demon before it was pushed to the back.
"There are no bases near here," sighed Dante, taking control of the body once again. "So that means that René is not close enough for us to take him out and be back before dark."
"So, what is your suggestion, oh fearless leader?" asked Tank just as the sound of footsteps against the pavement reached them.
"The good Lord gives," murmured Chang Xuefeng as he cocked his head to the side as if he was trying to listen to something.
"More like the Devil, but at this point, it’s splitting hairs," nodded Beau as he clasped Chang Xuefeng on the shoulder. "So, what do you hear?"
"It’s not what I hear... it’s what I see. Twenty-three souls are coming this way, and more than half of them seem to be contaminated with the seeds," Chang Xuefeng answered as Dante stepped into the middle of the path.
"Well then, since they are our fellow demons sent all the way from Hell, let’s give them a warm welcome, shall we?" A ball of lightning appeared in Dante’s hand as tiny sparks managed to escape, trying to get to anyone in his way.
-----
"Who are you?" demanded the man at the head of the convoy. While Chang Xuefeng had gotten the numbers right, he failed to mention that it wasn’t a typical survivor party with women and children, but rather twenty-three men, armed to the teeth and missing more than a few chunks of skin.
"That doesn’t really matter much to dead men," replied Beau. He stood just to the left and a bit behind Dante as Tank took to the right. While Beau had gotten into enough trouble in Med school to know how to throw a punch, this style of fighting wasn’t really his forte.
He would leave it to the men who did this for a living and patch them up at the end of the day.
After all, there was no doubt in his mind who was going to win.
"You know... you look smart, but you don’t seem to count so good," sneered the leader, turning his attention away from Dante and toward Beau.
That was his first mistake.
Tank sprang forward, his fist crashing into the cheek of the stranger, sending him flying to the side. "You will answer our questions, and only our questions, when we allow you to speak," stated Dante as Tank returned to his side. "If you don’t want to answer our questions, that is completely up to you; I am a fair man. I’ll never take away your choices."
The stranger snorted as the men behind him let out a low chuckle as they all exchanged looks with each other. Everyone thought they were tough at the beginning of the apocalypse, but the smart ones knew that the line between predator and prey was drawn in blood.
And they have shed enough blood to prove that they were the predators.
In contrast, out of these four men, two were dressed in full suits and ties, while the one who could punch was simply in slacks and a button-down. Only the tall one was wearing combat gear...
Which meant that only one of them was the weapon while the other three liked to play.
"Whatever you are thinking, you are wrong," sighed Dante, taking his eyes away from the leader to look at the others. "So sit down and shut up."
Dante never expected to have a spirit power before... in his last life, he was a water user... but right now, he would give anything to have these people stop screaming in his head. The only people whose thoughts he couldn’t hear were Hattie and the three men around him, and that made him realize just how lucky he was.
Cause people sucked, and their thoughts were always worse than the words coming out of their mouths.
"Is there a reason why we are keeping them alive?" mused Chang Xuefeng. "They have supplies... which means that we can complete our mission and not have to leave this spot. Besides, this path only leads to one destination... are we really going to let them into our home?"
