Chapter 209: What I Wanted And Needed
Letting out a long sigh, I let myself grow as my hair tumbled out of the pigtails I kept them in. Instead of the dress that I usually wore, I changed into the last dress that I had seen Luci in... the black one with the thigh-high split and the sleeve down one arm.
I didn’t have her tattoos; instead, I showed off my scars and my staples, a testament to the harsh life I have lived up to this point. Before, when I didn’t understand what was going on, I hated those scars... I saw them as a weakness as to what I had allowed others to do to me.
But I was older now... or at least I understood things better.
Scars weren’t a sign of weakness but of strength.
A lot of people wouldn’t be able to survive what I had survived, and now I was wearing my scars like trophies, including the one that bisected my face.
No longer was Bishop looking at the human version of myself, but the person I was inside... Lucifer.
"You are not dumb, Mathis Duhon," I announced, never breaking my eyes away from the angel in front of me. "If you want to keep living, forget everything about this place and pray that I never see you again. The next time your path crosses mine, I will kill you... and no threat of war will stop me."
Now that I was at the same height as the woman in Bishop’s arms, I studied her as well. "Treat your daughter well," I announced. "Don’t corrupt her like you are trying to do, or I will rip off that mask you are wearing and show everyone your true face."
I had assumed that it was only the humans who had been caught outside when the demon seed rained down on Earth, but I could see the flutter of a purple seed as it infected her heart. It was interesting that she was strong enough to keep it at bay for so long...
But maybe a part of that was because of the angel beside her.
Either way, envy was burrowing deep into her heart, and she wasn’t going to remain human much longer. I just hoped that I wasn’t seeing the past repeat itself. I could see my mother in her and myself in Libby.
But I was not here to save the world... I was here to burn it down so that it could come back stronger than ever.
Kind of like a forest fire that kills everything in its wake. When the fires were out and enough time had passed, the seeds of life regrew in the graveyard of the old. I could only hope that the new seeds would be better than the past ones.
"Who do you—" started Sophie right before Bishop started dragging her and Libby away.
"Bye-bye now," I smiled at them as I took out a lollypop and popped it into my mouth. My eyes never left the silhouette of the family of three until they were so far away that they had disappeared.
"Well, shit," grunted Beau as he looked me up and down. "So this is what you were hiding from all of us?" The smirk on his face was appreciative, and if I wasn’t so cranky, I might have taken him up on his promises.
But while this might be my true skin, it didn’t feel like me.
Letting out a sigh, it was like someone was realizing air from a balloon as I shrank down and my looks transformed back to what I was used to.
Like I said... there was nothing wrong with me, and the sooner everyone realized that, the happier they would be. I was not Luci... the trials and tests that I had undergone were different than hers.
I might be a reincarnation, but I was not her. And I didn’t want to be. So, until I needed to pull out the really, really big guns, I would stay like this.
"Are all the humans gone?" I asked Tank without responding to Beau. If the humans were gone, I needed to make some slight changes to the building in front of me, as well as the warehouses and gates. It wouldn’t be too over the top, just a small thing here and there to make this place feel more like home.
"For the most part, they are," nodded Tank. "There might be one or two still left in the basement to feed the puppy, but they should be breathing their last breath any minute now, so they don’t really count."
Cocking my head to the side, I tried to remember when we had gotten a puppy.
"The zombie," sighed Dante, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Tank is talking about the zombie in our basement that he just remembered to feed after a month."
Nodding my head, I smiled at Tank. "Okay, then I am going to be doing a bit of redecorating if that is okay with you?"
"Whatever you want and need," replied Tank and Dante at the same time before they shared a look.
"Okay then," I said with a wave of my hand. "Go disappear and do something else. Don’t come back until nightfall."
"That’s in about four hours," replied Beau as he looked up at the sun.
Fuck, this day seemed to be going on forever. But I wouldn’t be able to sleep until I knew that this place was mine and that it was safe.
"All the more reason for you all to fuck off and disappear," I shrugged. "Bye!"
----
It took only a bit more convincing before the four men set off to find some supplies for me.
The second they disappeared along the same path as Bishop, I turned back to the office building in front of me. I understood where Dante was going with this thing... and I know he bent over backward to get the bulletproof glass and make it as safe as he could. But that was not enough.
It stood out like a beacon of light as the sun reflected off the walls upon walls of glass and windows.
Cracking my neck from side to side, I thought about what I wanted to see... what I needed... what it could be.
With a snap of my fingers, I closed my eyes and made a wish.
