Chapter 200: Food Is Food
"I’m sorry, would you like to repeat that?" asked Dante, looking down at the man he didn’t recognize at the front gate.
The man glared at him like he was some sort of scum on the bottom of his shoe. "I said that you are not welcome here. Go fuck off, and maybe you won’t be killed."
"This is the Dragon’s Lair?" asked Chang Xuefeng as he looked at Tank. Tink was trailing behind the four men, but he was making his anger apparent with the swish of his tail.
"It is," replied Tank, his eyes narrowing on the man at the gate. They hadn’t been gone all that long, maybe a bit more than a month, but he hadn’t really been counting. How could things have gone to shit like this so soon?
"And this is the safe haven you have prepared for your little Lamb?" While Chang Xuefeng might not have meant it how it sounded, the condescending tone that he was using was enough to set Tank off.
He had spent months going through and vetting every single person in that building before setting off to get his woman. He even waited a few more days after he felt her return just to make sure that everything would be perfect.
And this was what he came back to?
He guessed it was a blessing in disguise that she hadn’t arrived with them. If she had seen this, she would have doubted just how well he could protect her. And that was her whole point in coming, here. She wanted the protection and safety she had experienced before.
"Where is Bishop?" demanded Dante, feeling the tension practically flowing off Tank. At least Beau was keeping his demon in check because if Gluttony was anything like Pride, they were ready to level everything and just start over from scratch.
"You aren’t worthy of speaking to him. Look, we get a lot of refugees on a daily basis. You aren’t that special. However, if you go to the front gate, you might be able to get in. I’m not saying that it is a given, but just maybe, if you can prove you can use a gun, they’ll let you at least test in."
Letting out a long sigh, Dante simply nodded his head. "Okay," he shrugged. "If that is what you think is best."
The moment he moved to the side, Tank raised his gun and shot the man in the head. "What about this? Does that mean we can test in?" sneered Dante as he reached down to get the key card from the man.
However, no matter how hard he looked, there was no key card to be found. Only a really old set of keys.
"What the hell is going on?" grunted Dante as he looked up at Tank.
Not bothering to respond, Tank jumped over the gate and opened it from the other side. "I don’t know," he sighed. "But Hattie said that Bishop was the one in charge, so maybe we need to ask him."
"Do you really think that Bishop has betrayed us?" asked Dante, stopping in front of Tank to get his opinion.
"I think that this is not how we left things," replied Tank, not really saying anything. "But I think you should also know what is going to happen next."
"If Bishop has actually betrayed us, then I will let you handle it. However, he is one of us. He deserves to at least tell us his side of the story."
"His side of the story?" chuckled Chang Xuefeng as he walked up to the two men. Beau followed quickly after, with Tink bringing up the rear. "If he poses a threat to Hattie, then he has no ’his side of the story’."
"What he said," agreed Beau, his eyes flashing orange as Gluttony put in his vote, too.
"This isn’t a democracy," snarled Dante, not liking the idea that so many of the men he had trusted were able to turn on him so fast. "My word is law."
"Until it’s not," pointed out Chang Xuefeng softly. "And that is when we’ll have a problem."
---
"Report," said Dante from behind his desk. His hands were folded on top of the other as he stopped himself from reaching across the desk to shake his second in command. "What’s happened since we left?"
"How did you get in?" asked Bishop as he smiled from his seat on the other side of the desk.
"That’s your response?" chuckled Dante. "Asking me how I got in was your response rather than answering my question."
The door to his office opened without permission and a familiar looking woman entered. The smile on her face dropped when she saw Dante sitting behind the desk. "Who are you, and why are you sitting there?" she asked, her voice surprisingly a lot firmer than the last time Dante had spoken to her.
"Why?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "Who should be sitting here if not me?"
"Bishop," came the swift response, and Dante nodded.
"Anything else I should know?" he asked the other man. "Because Tank is ready to clean house. And I think I know who is first on his list."
Not bothering to answer, Bishop simply turned around to look at the woman. "Head home; I’ll be there as soon as I am done with this meeting." The smile he gave her was so soft and reassuring that it surprised Dante.
He really didn’t think that Bishop had that side to him.
The woman looked back and forth between Bishop and Dante before finally turning around and leaving. Closing the door softly behind her, her eyes widened as she stared at Tank.
"You," she said softly, a smile on her face. "I don’t think I ever properly thanked you for saving me and my daughter. Come over for dinner tonight, and I’ll cook you something. There isn’t a lot that I can offer since the power went out, but food is food."
"Don’t bother," replied Tank as he spoke over her head. "I am regretting ever saving you and your daughter. But you are right... food is food."
And that reminded him. He had a puppy in the basement that hadn’t been fed in a while. He would need to make this meal a big one.
