Chapter 193: You Know...

I will fully admit that I was enjoying the chaos of everything going on. The good scientist was screaming as the zombie rat tried to move into his neck, Eve was screaming when she saw all the blood, and Adam didn’t seem to know what to do.

The rat finally managed to get all the way into Doctor Comeau’s neck before the scientist started the tremors, which I had begun to understand was the start of the transformation of the dumb zombies.

Letting out a long sigh over the fact that I had now officially lost my new pet, I was surprised when Tank snatched up a white rat that was trying to escape for its life and held it up to the new zombie.

A shrill whistle surprised me as Tank commanded the attention of the zombie. "I can feed you if you will be good. What do you say?" he asked the zombie, who was now focusing on the squealing rat. When it tried to clumsily lunge toward the offering, Tank snapped it back.

"No," he said, his tone firm like he was training a dog. "You want this?" Once again, he held out the treat to the trembling zombie. This time, the zombie didn’t lunge. "Good zombie," purred Tank. "You get a reward."

Ripping off the head of the white rat, Tank threw it at the zombie with the green rat sticking out of his throat. The human zombie gobbled it down, his eyes never leaving the rest of the body.

"Are you going to listen to me?" demanded Tank, still holding the bleeding offering. Ever so slowly, the human and rat zombie nodded their heads. "Good zombie."

This time, he threw the remainder of the carcass at the zombie, and the thing seemed to calm down as he ate.

"You are too good at that," sighed Dante, his eyes closed as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "How—you know what? No. I’m not going to ask how you figured that trick out. You have a zombie in our basement, don’t you?"

Tank shrugged his shoulders as the zombie, now finished with its meal, turned its attention back to him. "It’s the zombie apocalypse," shrugged Tank. "Who doesn’t have a zombie or two in their basement?"

"We don’t," sputtered Eve, still looking a little green. The sick kind of green, not the zombie kind. "There are no zombies in our basement!"

"I disagree," I sighed before pointing to the very ’living’ zombie in front of us. "He’s a zombie, and he’s in your basement."

Without a word, Adam took out his gun and shot the zombie point-blank in the head.

The problem with that move was that the bullet easily passed through the zombie’s skull and tried to enter my own since I was standing on the other side of it. Tilting my head to the side, I let the bullet fly past me and into one of the many cages behind me.

"Now, that’s not very nice of you," I said, all amusement gone from my face. I didn’t know if a bullet to my head would kill me since I was the new Devil since Luci was dead, but it was also something that I wasn’t all that eager to test out.

For obvious reasons.

I was certain that death did not become me.

"I don’t like you," stated Adam, his face impassive as my men stiffened around me. I could feel the calculations that Pride and Gluttony were making in their head as to how to kill the man in front of us, but I simply held up my hand to stop them.

"I grieve," I stated just as impassively. "How will I ever survive without your love and approval?"

Adam cocked his head to the side as he studied my face. "You aren’t like her," he grumbled, finally showing his hand. However, unlike him, I wasn’t willing to divulge all my secrets to a man who just tried to kill me.

"I’m not like anyone else you have ever met," I assured him. "And if you want to keep breathing, I suggest that you put that gun away. Clearly, my men and I aren’t welcome here, so I am just going to leave before getting any sleep. Too bad for you."

Brushing past Adam, I ignored Eve’s attempt to keep us in the building as numerous animals frantically tried to find their own way out. The only one taking his time was the giant gator who was a lot bigger than I originally thought.

"Are you coming?" I asked, cocking my head to the side as I looked at the prehistoric creature. "I’m sure that I can build a moat around the Dragon’s Lair for you. It would keep tourists out, that’s for sure."

The gator seemed to be considering my words before nodding his head. Ah, fuck my life. Now I knew that normal gators weren’t that smart. I wonder what other kinds of experiments the good doctor, now dead zombie, had performed on the overgrown lizard.

Meh, at least life wasn’t going to be boring. I couldn’t think of anything worse than a boring life.

Leaving the CDC building, the guys and I went back on the road with a gator trailing behind us. They weren’t able to rest, and I did feel a bit bad about that, but I was sure that there would be another place for us to sleep.

The even better part was that since I didn’t actually get to sleep there, all the supplies automatically went into my space, including my bed, snacks, and guns from the room. I wonder just how happy Adam and Eve are going to be when they find out about that little parting gift.

We kept walking, putting one foot in front of the other until about noon when Dante called us to a stop. "We need lunch," he said with a sigh. "It’s all well and good that Pride can go without food, but us mere mortals need something more substantial than air to eat."

Beau grunted in agreement as he dropped to the ground, stretching out his legs in front of him. "If I had known that we were going to be doing all this walking, I would have put on better shoes," he complained, pointing out for the first time that he was wearing dress shoes along with his dress pants and button-down shirt.

The poor man was completely drenched in sweat.

"You know," I started hesitantly. "I might be able to transport us straight to the Dragon’s Lair."
