Chapter 175: Jealousy

"There is nothing to be scared of anymore," said a woman’s voice inside my head. "They are here, and they are here for you. That is—"

The woman paused, her voice trailing off midsentence as I opened my eyes and looked around. I knew I was dreaming, there was no doubt in my mind, but my mind had to be pretty fucked up to be dreaming in this technicolor.

The world around me was literally burning. Pillars of flames rose from the ground, stretching high into the purplish sky to the point that I couldn’t see where they ended. Smaller fires took over the ground, smoldering on either side of the path I had found myself on.

For a split second, I was scared, not sure if I was dreaming of my own death. I had been completely surrounded by roaring fires...

I expected it to be hot... and yet, I couldn’t feel anything. My brain was telling me that if I made one wrong move, I was going to be burned to death, while my other senses were telling me that I was in the middle of a beautiful valley with rolling green hills and flowers all over the place.

When I closed my eyes, I could smell a sweet scent in the air, like apples, as a gentle breeze brushed past my cheek.

It was a complete mindfuck, and for a while, I didn’t realize that there was even another person on the path in front of me.

Studying the woman, I didn’t know how to feel. She was stunningly gorgeous; her long blond hair fell around her in gentle curls, and her bright blue eyes seemed to hold all the secrets of the universe.

She was about my height, or maybe a few inches taller, and had a body that I would kill for. She wore a loose-fitting, forest green sweater that hung to her upper thighs, and paired with a set of white thigh-high socks, she didn’t look like she belonged in a sea of fire. Hell, she wasn’t even wearing any shoes!

However, more than just her looks, what surprised me the most was just how innocent she seemed. She hadn’t said a single word to me, but I knew without a doubt that she was going to speak softly and gently and make my teeth ache with how sweet she was.

How could someone who screamed purity ever live in a place like this?

"Where am I?" I called out before cringing. Was I too loud? Did my face and scars scare her? Her skin was absolutely perfect, just like everything else about her. I was almost jealous for a moment that the dirt of the world had yet to contaminate her.

I bet her Père never used her or beat her... I bet she has had the most perfect life imaginable.

My jealousy was starting to take over the more I compared the two of us, but I couldn’t help myself. "Who are you?" My voice was sharp, too sharp, but there was nothing I could do about that now.

"Where do you think you are?" chuckled the woman, sweeping an arm out in front of her. The moment she moved, the pillars of flames that I could see almost exploded, growing thicker as the fires inside them spun even faster.

"My eyes say hell, but my nose and ears say I’m wrong," I grunted as I heard the soft songs of birds fluttering around me.

"Huh," replied the woman as she turned around. "Most only go with their eyes."

"And my second question?" I shouted after her, quickly following along the narrow path and the woman in front of me. "Who are you?"

Before she could reply, a small cottage appeared at the end of the path, and she opened the door wide enough to let me in.

"No one of importance," she sighed, forcing a smile on her face. "I have to say, I’m surprised that you are here. No one ever comes here... or if they do, it’s not willingly."

I snorted at the idea that this woman didn’t have any friends or men trying to break down the door to fuck the innocent right out of her. Picking up a cup of coffee, she took a sip before walking toward a living room that appeared out of nowhere.

There were only two chairs, each one facing a glowing fire that crackled in the silence. Taking one of them, she curled up and stared forward.

"Like I was saying," she started as I just stood there like an idiot. "You don’t have to worry anymore. The Sins are now on Earth, and they will be more than happy to protect you."

The words themselves seemed to be like she was happy for me, but there was also a taste of bitterness to them that I didn’t expect to come out of her.

Turning her head for a moment, she looked me up and down, and I couldn’t help but be found wanting.

You know what? Fuck this. Cracking my neck, I held my head up high as I walked toward the only other chair in the room and took out a cup of bourbon from my space. I was tired of being on the losing end of this conversation.

I might not look exactly like her, but I have survived shit that she never had to, so she could just fuck right off home if she didn’t want me around. It wasn’t like I asked to be dropped wherever I was.

"You sound pissed about that," I chuckled, taking a sip of the drink, letting it burn all the way down. Looking around the room, there wasn’t a single thing out of place, no clutter, no liquor bottles, no flowers, nothing.

Everything was perfect... and that was starting to get to me.

"It is what it is," she sighed, looking into her coffee. "I have come to accept it."

"What? Next you are going to claim the Sins as your own? Is that it?" I chuckled wickedly as something hit me. This perfect creature was jealous of me. ME!

She wanted what I had...
